Title: ARRRRRGGGG!!!!! Got a virus from Facebook
Post by: Tucker on June 05, 2010, 10:50:41 AM
Fighting the damn thing for three days. This was on my notebook. It kept loading porno thumbnail pics on my desktop. I kept getting a pop-up asking me to but anti virus software. I would close this and get a message that I had no anti virus software, even though I did.

I ran a diagnostic and found the viruses. Three of em. I got the string and tried to find them on my hard drive. Not there. Sum bitch.

Ended up having to take it to "The Geek Guys." They charged me 199.00 to clean it up. I do get a 70.00 discount because it's under a year old. Some warranty something or another.

What made it bad was that my laptop(2 years old) wouldn't stay running for fifteen minutes. The fan would start and then it would overheat, shutting off. This had been going on for a few months. Finally it wouldn't stay on at all. I thought it might be a software/driver conflict so I did a clean reinstall. I did transfer my files to disk beforehand. After all of this, no change.

I took em both in at the same time. The geek took the laptop in the back and blew it out. He sail there was enough dust in it to fill a vacuum bag. No charge. It works fine now.

Now I get to spend several days reloading my bookmarks.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/tucker13/emoticons/cussing2.gif)

Why did they ever replace an abacus and carrier pigeons?

Dude, don't tell me you threw away your abacus and pigeon coop when you got those new-fangled unreliable toys!

I had one of those viruses that throw up a fake "buy this virus protection" now thing. They installed "hidden" files for me to hunt down.

Malware Bytes certainly helped. The computer still tries to load one of them but can't find it at startup so I get a notice. I haven't been able to fix that, lol.

I don't do any games, answer any questions, send any "gifts", nothing on FB....since it screwed up my desktop  :censored: and I had to call Thor to help me fix it.

Must be everyones week for it because I got hit somehow too.

Couldn`t open anything on the desktop.
Started it in safe mode and was able to do a system restore and then did several AVG scans to clean it up.

Was glad to have the laptop in the meantime though.

That was no charge for the blowing. I'm being charged for the notebook restore. It had broadband from Verison installed. I can't delete that.

One of the nice things about Vista is that it allows you to go back in a point in time and delete everything after that point. The notebook I bought late last year at Verison still uses Windows XP. I couldn't find that option on XP.

I got the same virus, and it was super frustrating because I couldn't even load my anti-virus software.  If it was Anti-Virus Soft, then here are the instructions I used to get rid of it:

http://www.myantispyware.com/2010/01/30/how-to-remove-antivirus-soft-uninstall-instructions/

Might come in handy if it shows up again.

I have Vista Home Premium and I don't know how to do that.

You have to set a restore point before you start having any issues.  Go to Control Panel ->  System and Maintenance -> Backup and Restore center -> Create a Restore point (on the left side under tasks).  If you create a new one every so often, maybe the first of every month, then you'll be able to respond better if your computer gets infected.

XP has a system restore too...

Thor had me get malewarebytes and it's been working really well.

When I was getting help on my DSL line a week ago with AT&T, I said something to the tech about getting viruses from FB....she sort of laughed and said hmmm. I'm sure she's not allowed to bad-mouth FB, but from the way she said hmmmm....it was pretty obvious what she thought.

My desktop is XP and it is found in the control panel.
It wouldn`t open that though until I booted up in safe mode.
Again thank God for the laptop and Google because I had no idea that existed or how to do it without research online.

<------- Not very computer smart.

The laptop is Vista so does that mean I have to make the restore point?
The XP version on the desktop does it on its own.

I have Vista, and yeah, I've had to set my own restore points.  I was actually really surprised the first time I looked for one when there wasn't one there.

Download the free version of Avast. It will tell you the instant you open a bad page and stop it. Set it to update everyday.

You can clean the inside of your computer, but be careful! If you use canned air, do not get too close, it will freeze connectors or blow them loose.  I use a small paintbrush for hard to reach places. Laptops are a little trickier, lots of stuff packed in there.

Spywared.com has a list of viruses and how to remove them. You can add them to your host list to block.

When one gets a virus, remember to boot up in safe mode w/ networking. (F8 immediately after POST) Go find a copy of MalwareBytes  download it and run  it. It'll get rid of 95% of those nasty buggers. I think that Avast can be downloaded, installed and updated and then run while i safe mode, too.

I use both. I keep both on a USB. I hate Norton and wish they'd quit putting it on every computer. I bought a new laptop last month and they charge to take it off. I did it myself, that junk invades everything.

Opening Vista in a safe mode allows you to select a random date at any point in time.

The ads on Facebook are the typical culprits for that "buy this anti virus software" virus.  I use Firefox and have the Ad Block Sense add on.  Ever since installing that, I have never had to look at an ad or deal with the possibly getting a virus from an ad.  You don't even have to click anything for that stupid anti-virus software virus.  Just loading a page with the ad that contains the virus will make your computer go bonkers.

The bad thing is that Norton isn't exactly easy to just "uninstall". I HATE Norton. If done wrong, it will block  internet access and some other annoying things. I went away from Norton back in 97 or 98.

I just use a Shop-VacTM to clean mine.

Another thing about Facebook, be careful about clicking on youtube video links. Make sure it is youtube when you hover over the link.

Any recommendations for a GOOD anti virus program since Norton seems to be in the dumps?

I use AVG for before the infection protection . On the few instances when a virus evades AVG I then use MalwareBytes .

Avast is free and damn good, but you also definitely need Malwarebytes.

Duh, Alpha Mare recommended Avast! I'll second that recommendation. AVG has missed stuff in the past and caused me great amounts of grief. Avast has a free version. It works quite well.
