Twelve people were shot dead and 25 injured Wednesday when a crazed cab driver went on a horrifying three-and-a-half-hour gun rampage across England’s Lake District.
Derrick Bird, 52, drove through remote towns and villages in the picturesque vacation spot, spraying bullets from the window of his taxi and killing indiscriminately.
The divorced father-of-two -- described by stunned friends as a quiet, popular, “regular guy†-- ended his deadly spree by fatally shooting himself in woodland near the sleepy Cumbrian hamlet of Boot.
Shaken police chiefs confirmed that 12 innocent people had been shot dead. A further 25 were being in treated in hospitals for gunshot wounds, with medics warning the death toll could rise.
Local officials in Cumbria, northwest England, described Wednesday's horror as “the blackest day†in the history of the region, which has recently been rocked by a major school bus crash and devastating floods.

All political issues aside, I am very curious about how he managed to get access to a firearm, as difficult as it is to obtain one there.

Was he dressed as a clown as the time?

I was googling for some hard numbers but omeone at Free Republic has done the work for me: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2526126/posts?q=1&;page=51

how did I guess, that the very first comment on this thread would be some stupid yank making some ill-informed political point about the stupidities of gun-control.
so let us set the record straight. Guns are NOT illegal in Britain. The police here have not stated what weapon was used in this affair, but several witnesses have said that they saw the guy with a shotgun. There are, as of the last count in 2009, 1,336,000 shotguns LEGALLY held by over 500, 000 britons registered to hold them.
Just remember when you start spouting on this, twelve people are DEAD. Twenty-five others have been hospitalised. I do not consider it a time for flippancy. Vanders (who lives in West Cumbria)

That would make sense, from my limited knowledge of UK gun laws, I do know that shotguns (Simple ones like doubles and single-shots anyway) are very considerably easier to own legally than any sort of pistol or rifle. Among air gunners, the UK is also known for its '25 foot-pound' rule, limiting the maximum power of air rifles that can be sold, which are almost entirely unrestricted in the US (So we have some truly bad-ass air rifles!)

My understanding of shotguns (any long gun) Is....you have to belong to a hunt club and th eweapon be kept there and not in the home.
I may be wrong or only partially right.

I'd be careful who you call a stupid yank, limey! We don't have restrictions on what kind of gun we can pack!
Stupid yank, indeed! If the populace of Britain had concealed carry, perhaps this loonie toon could have been stopped before all the carnage. At least the casualty count could have been much less!

I don't what the equivalent to 9-1-1 is in the UK, but anyways, to quote some bumper sticker logic: "9-1-1= Government Sanctioned Dial-a-Prayer".

It's 9-9-9, or was when I was there.....

Notice how the headline states "gun spree" and not "killing spree"
The media chooses their wording very carefully. The author is apparently pro gun laws

Still is.

The safest place to kill a bunch of people is one that doesn't allow anyone to shoot back...

I sure never have heard of a mass shooting at a firing range, gun store or gun show.
