Title: Japanese report says US/SK plannning Commando rescue mission
Post by: The Village Idiot on May 29, 2010, 12:36:11 PM
There are hundreds of South Koreans working in North Korea in an industrial park that is supposed to be a peace venture between the two countries. A Freeper has translated a Japanese report saying that the US and SK are planning for a possible commando raid if the NK's try to take these people hostage by cutting off the roads and such.

So much for international cooperation. lol. And for secrecy. [edit: Apparently its NOT a secret at all, wow]

Can you imagine urban warfare in THAT?
Most of the complex is apparently used by Hyundai. It is barely north of the DMZ.

To stand by and watch this World falling apart is making me wonder how my parents felt like watching the events lead up to WWII.

That reminds me. For a year now, a FReeper has been posting WW2 NY Times articles day by day, "real time" so we can watch it all unfold all over again just like back then. It's a pretty amazing series of threads.

Here is todays thread. The first image is always the front page, above the fold.

In 1940 on this day the King of Belgium had just surrendered his forces to the NAZI's, leaving British and French troops encircled by the NAZI armies. Remember.. Dunkirk?

There is a possibility that a thousand or more South Koreans are in that industrial complex. That would make a rescue mission a MAJOR operation and the North will see it as an act of war.

Like the South Koreans wouldn't see taking the civillians hostage as an act of war?

If you do a keyword search for "realtime" at FR, you'll see they go way way back.

I'm thinking this is akin to Saddam's taking of hostage prior to Iraq War 1.0.

FGL is right though: if there is a military rescue effort it's pretty much a resumption of general hostilities along with the diplomatic, economic and humanitarian catastrophe that would entail.

We didn't launch an effort like that vs Iraq I don't see it happening here...even with a renegade, unilateralist, militant cowboy like Obama in the WH.
