Schools: Immigrant families leaving Arizona because of new immigration law
by Pat Kossan - May. 28, 2010 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
Reports are surfacing around the Valley that illegal-immigrant families with school-age children are fleeing Arizona because of a new immigration law.
<snip>
Teachers and principals at Alhambra elementary schools in west Phoenix, for example, are saying goodbye to core volunteer parents, who tell them that the new migration law threatens their family stability and that they must leave. The district expects the new law to drive out an extra 200 to 300 students over the summer.
<snip>
For every net decline of one student, a school loses an average of $4,404 in state money. The total amount of funding for the 170,000 children of immigrants is about $749 million, or 16 percent, of the state's education budget.
<snip>
Suriano's husband has been in New Mexico for two weeks, looking for an apartment and a job. She is packing up their Phoenix apartment. "He tells me over in New Mexico, it is like here when we first came: There is no fear and they treat you like human beings."

<Ed. to add:>
The intent of the Arizona anti-immigrant law, from its text:
Section 1. Intent
The legislature finds that there is a compelling interest in the cooperative enforcement of federal immigration laws throughout all of Arizona. The legislature declares that the intent of this act is to make attrition through enforcement the public policy of all state and local government agencies in Arizona. The provisions of this act are intended to work together to discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.

heh.
hell, i'm just a dumb country boy...
but wasn't getting the illegals to leave the state the whole point of this exercise? mission accomplished.
and now that they are?
texas? new mexico? colorado? its your problem to deal with now.
this reminds me of the time i lived in that studio apartment in boston, all of those interconnected buildings, when one tenant would fire off a "bug bomb" to evict the cockroaches? all of the other connected buildings would "reap the rewards" of that bug bomb.
good luck, texas, new mexico and colorado.
now you can pass similar laws... or just learn to live with your new found "bugs"...

I have $20 that says they never use the word 'working', unless it is to discribe those "hard working immigrants without papers" that this unfair, fascist law is driving back to their home *******ed countries shitholes.

Saving $749 million a year just in the education budget sounds awesome to me. How much will they save from welfare and keeping the illegal criminals locked up?

The boycott is the least of Arizona's worries at this point.
yes, don't you just love beth's take on this issue?
the illegals. those that get paid cash money, under the table, undermining wages for all working americans, without ever contributing to taxes...
the illegals are the "tax base" of arizona?

Theoretically, if a child is no longer attending school, then the school should not long need the money it is given to educate that child, correct? So a 16% decrease in funding would be matched by a 16% decrease in attendance, and therefore should not have a negative impact on the remaining students. Why is this a bad thing?
-
That's just not fair... you're asking liberals to apply common sense and basic math. You meanie. :-)

Not to mention the savings from not having the whole litter going to the ER for their "health care", decreased crime, etc, etc....

Have to agree - I also suspect that the migration will result in more border states passing similar laws - which is the best win of all.
If the USA enforces the already existing laws, this problem will sort itself out. But since it won't, (not just blaming Obama either, GW Bush was just as bad in this instance) states need to step up to the plate.
-
The ****ing law was only meant to empower the cops to research immigration status if they had probable cause.
But thanks to the fascists-draconian imagery the liberals have been bleating and lying for the last month or so the have convinced the illegals that the law is far more invasive than it is. So now the illegals are running scared because it's the liberals that have scared them. Too bad--for them--they don't trouble themselves to learn English.
Thank-you lying liberals and ignorant immigrants...we couldn't have done it without you.

This was the same thing that 'went wrong' with Prop 8 in California. Catholics don't like gay marriage (Hispanics are overwhelmingly Catholic) and neither do blacks.

Went to a funeral Mass last night for one of our priest's mother.....he is from Mexico. We have a very large number of Mexican parishioners. Many were there with their children last night....LOTS of children. Most people of Mexican heritage are very, very devout Catholics.

Questions for Miskie.
Why do you supose a majoriety of gays are white people.?
Religion, or lack thereof. Most people with ethnic heritage from southern Europe are very Catholic (Spain, Italy, Portugal etc.. Thats the basis of the South American Hispanic population- especially Spain and Portugal). And most blacks are also fervently Christian. Those few who aren't are Muslim.
Of course, there are other faiths, as well as non faith mixed in there, but the above is true for the majority.
-
If losing the illegals is going to effect AZ's tax base so much, how is it that the source of Mexico's 2nd largest source of funds is money sent home from illegals working in America. Do they make so much money that they are major contributors to revenue in both AZ and Mexico?

And how is it that a job that pays so well that they can afford to support the US, Arizona and Mexican governments simultaneously (and still be able to put enough food on the table to get back to that great job the next day) is a "job that lazy Americans just won't do"?
-
I forgot to add, the left needs to stop saying that illegals either pay taxes or contribute to the economy, for every $1 they contribute they use $3 in services.
-
Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Around here (E TN) the Mexicans work extensively in construction and landscaping, construction is year 'round and landscaping is 9-10 months of the year.
If they are paid cash, it's about $8-10 per hour. Which doesn't sound like that much until you realize that it's straight cash and the full amount, with no taxes taken out. They work dawn to dark, many just as day laborers. I have seen them at construction sites at 7-8 at night, sometimes working later with artificial light. "Employed" construction workers leave at 4 at the latest.
Several years ago, I was showing condos to a buyer. Went into this townhouse complex and there were 4 available in one building. I made appointments, but could only get in to see 3 of them. Same owner on all 3.
Went in the first one....2 brs. Two twin mattresses with folded blankets at the foot of each one, on the floor of each bedroom, no other furniture in the brs....the clothes in very neatly folded stackes on the floor. Nothing hanging in the closests. 2 twins on the floor in the living room, same with the clothes. There was a table with couple of chairs in the eating area, dishes in the drainer on the counter, a small tv on the table. The whole place neat as a pin. My buyers and I thought it was really strange.
Then we went in the one next door.
Exactly the same. And the same with the 3rd.
When I got back to the office....I was telling another agent about it, and was told that was what some employers will do. They will buy up a building and put their Mexican employees up, so that they are all together, then send a truck around to pick them up in the morning and return them at night. They always show up to work and work all day. Their only expenses are food and personal items.
The Mexicans are able to send most of their earnings "back home" and work to get their families moved up here.
I did see on the local news the other day, that TN legislature had put a motion through to support AZ and is discussing passing a similar bill in TN.

Morristown and Hamblen county have a very high population of Mexicans. I know a year or so ago, Hamblen County was reported to have the highest population of Mexicans in the state. There was a big deal about steps Morristown was taking in order to process all the ID cards for those that didn't have driver's licenses.

Questions for Miskie.
Why do you supose a majoriety of gays are white people.?
OK I will bite.
Simply because the majority of out gays are white. There is a stigma in the black communities about gays so a good number of them are on the 'down low'. So there is a proportionate number of gay blacks but a good number of them are still in the closet.
One good friend that is still in the closet to his family said that his grandmother told him that she would rather him marry a white woman than be gay.
So the real question is why are blacks so racist and homophobic?

Slavery to the white man?
As far as homophobic....maybe because for generations the black man was physically and emotionally strong, a protector of sorts, to the "weaker, more fragile" woman.
A similar attitude is held by Italians, Greeks, Hispanics, Native Americans....any culture where men have held a more dominant position in the societal structure.
Homosexuality has always been perceived as effiminate and lacking in masculinity and strength....weak.
Only in the last 30-40 years, have gay men held a more tolerable position in genreal society.
Prior to that time, gay men were mostly in the closet, and those that weren't were in the "arts" where people have inherently been more tolerant.
Lesbians were "spinsters" and not as obvious to detect, as women have lived together for generations as roommates because it was physically safer for two women to live together than alone.

Hit by car, woman sues Google for bad walking directions
We've warned in the past that you shouldn't blindly rely on your GPS unit to give you directions, as people have been led astray (and nearly off cliffs) before. What about walking directions? If led onto a busy highway and hit by a car, can you sue?
That's the question being raised in a lawsuit by Lauren Rosenberg. She claims that after using Google Maps' "Walking Directions" feature on her BlackBerry (there's the problem: not Android or iPhone), she was led onto a busy highway and hit by a car.
