Just heard on the top of the hour radio news: The president will not participate in the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, as has been the tradition for most presidents in the past.
Instead, the White House reports that he and the first lady are scheduled to fly to Chicago for several events and parties that are being held there in his honor.
NOTE: I have not seen any confirmation of this as yet anywhere........at this point I would cast it as credible heresay. That said, I'm not surprised.

They reported the same thing on Fox News this morning. Supposedly he'll visit some cemetery near Chicago. More flaunting of traditions honoring the military.

With the long Memorial Day weekend on the horizon, President Obama is finally addressing one of the great broken promises of his administration: his early pledge to return home to Chicago every six weeks or so.
In 16 months at the White House, the Obamas have been back home just once - in February of 2009. But they plan to make the trip over Memorial Day weekend, an official said. After arriving on Thursday night, they will visit with friends and participate in private events.
On Monday, Obama will make remarks at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, south of Chicago - missing the usual tradition of presidents speaking at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.

Isn't it ironic that he attended the Ataturk annual memorial wreath ceremony in Turkey...he was given the honor of placing the wreath on Ataturk's tomb.

Mr. Obama is a malignent narcissist. Read his story and you'll see it. Don't think that having a Muslim father and step father didn't have an effect. Remember, they both, and his mother too, blew him off. So, when Frank Marshall Davis took him under his wing in Hawaii, brought up with doting grandparents, committed leftists all, it created an arrested personality with an overinflated ego. Anyway, he's the least sane President since Nixon had, to my mind, a little breakdown. A special little person who's been moulded carefully by committed leftists into the narcissistic idealogue we suffer with to this very day. Someone who cannot seperate reality from his personal fantesy life, and we're poorer for it.

The truth is that no president has missed the Arlington ceremony on Memorial Day since 1992. That year, former President Bush attended a ceremony in Maine while campaigning for re-election. In 1992 our nation was not at war. President Bush was himself a decorated war hero in World War II, risking life and limb to complete bombing missions in the Pacific and losing crewmates in the battles. His commitment to honoring his brothers-in-arms was never in doubt. So comparing 1992 to 2010 is not exactly an apples to apples debate.
UPDATE: As Robert points out in the comments, we failed to point out that President George W. Bush also missed Arlington’s Memorial Day ceremonies in 2002, when he joined Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi, Secretary of State Colin Powell and a bipartisan congressional delegation for services at the American cemetery in Normandy, France, honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day. Certainly an occasion that was warranted.
However, is President Obama attending services here because of the honor of this particular location, or the geographical proximity to his other plans? The memorial at Arlington serves as a national celebration, which is why past presidents have made special efforts to attend, when possible.

In 1983, President Reagan was at a summit meeting, and the deputy secretary of defense — not even the veep! — placed the wreath. Nine years later, President George H.W. Bush passed off the wreath to Vice President Dan Quayle (who had used family connections to get a slot in the National Guard during the days of the Vietnam War draft). And in 2007, Vice President Dick Cheney took on the wreath mission, while President George W. Bush was in Texas, perhaps clearing brush.
If I recall, GWB had some sort of meeting with some diplomats at his ranch for that year. I could be "misremembering", though.

Yes - I agree 100%. Just wanted to point out that through all the (deserved) hate and vitrial, Obama isn't the first.

He goes on vacation, in Chicago, vacationing after failing to doi his job, playing golf and cleansing his palare with Pizza.

The last time a President missed the ceremonies at Arlington on Memorial Day was 2002 when President Bush spent the day in Normandy at the American Cemetery before attending a NATO summit in Rome. The time before that was 1992.
