“That's the beauty of the concealed carry license.  You know I can.  You know I may.  So the best thing is for people not to mess with other people."

When it comes to packing heat, the I-Team found Texas lawmakers to be at least ten times more likely to have a concealed handgun license than the average Texas adult.

"I've had my concealed carry license for several years," said Senator Kel Seliger.

Senator Seliger is one of the nearly 20% of state lawmakers who told the I-Team they have an active concealed license.

However, when asked if he carries to work, he said he prefers to keep that to himself.

"I wouldn't care to answer, said Senator Seliger. “That's the beauty of the concealed carry license.  You know I can.  You know I may.  So the best thing is for people not to mess with other people."

One of the reasons lawmakers said they carry is it’s Texas tradition, but the main reason most lawmakers cited is safety.

In January, a Houston man, moments after visiting a senator's office, fired shots from the steps of the capitol.  No one was injured, but several lawmakers said the event has them rethinking security at the capitol.

More than a dozen state lawmakers, who don't have a concealed license, like Senator Rodney Ellis, said they're now considering it.

"Much to the chagrin of some member of my staff, I'm thinking of taking a class myself," said Senator Ellis.

For every lawmaker who told the I-Team they have a concealed license, there were ones, like Senator Jeff Wentworth, who did not want to tell us,

"You'll never know,” said Senator Wentworth.  “I don't give that information out.  I'm disappointed that some of my colleagues are answering that question.  They shouldn't answer that, in my opinion."

I agree with those that believe to get a CC  the applicant should be checked out for responsibility to have one.

I also agree that the applicants who want one HAS to under go a 6 week course on the responsibility of carrying a CC.  The cost for the permit should be hefty, enough say $1000 for the classes.  These CC should be renewed every 2 years and a renewal cost $250.00 .

Why the big money ????   The more valuable something is the more seriously people take it.   This is a huge responsibility to have the life or death of another on you.  Actually I would like to see those with a  CC have to re-qualify every 2 years for the license.---- Cops have to re qualify every year, why not civilians.

It is nuts to give out CC to people that cannot find the safety on a weapon or cannot hit the broad side of a barn.

Should we pay $1000 to exercise our free speech rights too?

Nope, that hefty fee is to keep the poor people and minorities from legally carrying, right Vesta?  Most gun laws were started to keep blacks from owning guns.

I don't even remember where I read that at. Early gun laws required permission from local authorities. These days it seems like the states and cities with the most restrictive gun laws also have higher concentrations of minorities.

If what you proposed ever came to be, outlaws will still get guns while the law-abiding will just become victims of robbery, rape, murder and government excess.

An armed society is a polite society.

We have open carry laws in this state.   To get a CC one must go to the police station and pick up a form that one has to have 3 people of outstand reputation attest that they have known you for some time and are responsible.

Not only are you investigated by the police, but the people that vouch for you are investigated also.

At one time it was the town Chief of Police that made the final decision on who could CC and depend on the reason an applicant wanted one.

In some states to receive a hunting license for seasoned game, one has to pass a gun safety course.

Heck up here to be allowed to operate a motor boat one has to take classes in boating safety.
