A student who received a full-ride ROTC scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill may now owe the Army nearly $80,000 for the money it put toward her tuition and books after coming out as a lesbian.
Sara Isaacson was notified in March that she was being discharged for violating “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell†after informing the head of the university’s ROTC program of her sexual orientation in a formal memo, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported.
Along with the notice was a recommendation that she repay the $79,265.14 the government spent on her education, the paper reported.
Isaacson says keeping her sexual orientation a secret would put her at odds with one of the Army’s key virtues.
"I didn't feel like I could be a good officer if I didn't have integrity," she told the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Lt. Col. Monte Yoder, head of the university's Army ROTC program, said Ms. Isaacson would never have had to talk about her sexual orientation at all.
"I was very clear with Miss Isaacson about that," he told the Chronicle. "I told her I won't ask."
Army officials have yet to issue a final decision on whether she will need to repay the money, the paper reported.

Call me skeptical , but I think she thought sh'ed get a discharge and not have to pay them back.
-
Make her pay it.
Maybe people will think ahead a little.
-
I'm kinda with Thundley......I suspect she planned it all along.....get a free education, come out, and not have to serve out her contract......

What? No interest? She owes principal and interest IMHO. I doubt there could be a penalty but she deserves one if it's found out she was planning this from the beginning. Something along the lines of spending her contracted enlistment time in some nice military prison like Gitmo works for me. :-)
-
Convert it to a student loan...pile on the interest...hound the hell out of her.
Nawh....I like prison time for fraud better.

Nope--ROTC is different. Back when I went to GT, it went from a, "Two and screw," meaning two years of scholarship before incurring any financial or service obligation, to a, "One and run," setup.
I only did two years in ROTC, and because I had come in from enlisted, back to enlisted I went. I ran into a guy I went to GT with in Orlando about a year later. He had been two years ahead of me. He was doing his 3 years AD because he apparently quit the last quarter--go figure.
Bottom line--you go into ROTC knowing that if you enter your sophomore, junior, or senior years, you owe the government SOMETHING, be it repayment of your education, or time on active duty as enlisted. Since she came out with the DADT policy in effect, the only thing the government can do is ask/force her to repay the cost of her education.
Which she was well aware of. She's trying to play for sympathy, and it's not gonna fly.

Bitch, if you had any integrity, you wouldn't have taken the money in the first place. We know what your supposed 'Integrity' is worth, now pay the **** up.

WITH INTEREST.

*IF* As the carpet munching, Turkey Baster squeezing, bull-dykes says being sexually-dysfunctional freaks has zero bearing on their military service, then why do those "fat-thighed" bulls INSIST on making their faggotism a pinnacle of their military service?

She was only being true to herself and I applaud her for that. I think y'all are just blowing this out of proportion

Fine--then why didn't she admit it BEFORE she got an education on our dime?

That shouldn't matter, maybe she didn't become a lesbian until recently

But they claim they are born that way. It isn't something they choose.

I'm trying to figure out if this is sarcasm.

If she's being true to herself, great--just make sure that's her true signature on the check. She's a big girl, she knew the rules going in and that she would incur some sort of obligation were she on scholarship past her freshman year.

I didn't realize he/she/it had been back for...............wait a damn minute, there is no baseline on a buisness hour. Currently we are at + 4 years and that still doesn't equal 24 buisness hours.
I know dealing with Soleil seems to stop time

Male homo's blow...female homo's suck...or so I've been told...not that there's anything wrong with that...as long as I don't have to do any research on the matter.

Besides committing fraud, this bitch kept some other ROTC scholarship applicant from being able to get the education and then, oh, I don't know, actually fulfill her or his obligation. :bird: I know, because at age 16 as a high school senior I received a 4-year scholarship and turned it down. What can I say? The parental units were pissed, and rightly so, but at 16 I didn't cotton to signing up for 8 years of my life, 4 in college and 4 in the military.
All's well that ends well in my case though. Got into university on grants and academic scholarships and ended up joining ROTC in my sophomore/junior year. I did 4 years of college in 3, which would not have been possible with a 4-year ROTC scholarship. So I was a butter bar at barely 20. :p Talk about wet behind the ears. Yeppers, because after all the angsty drama, I ended up signing up for the ROTC program and serving 5 1/2 years on active duty until the first baby came along. So, my parents were all :o :banghead:
I do believe this dumb :censored: needs to repay every red cent, with interest. And the ROTC program needs to go back, find out who was runner up on the scholarship list that year and give THAT PERSON the money. Then, they need to figure out a way to screen better next time. :thatsright:

Charge her for the education...she needs to learn that 'crack' is expensive.

Recent court decisions over the recovery of tuition costs side with the military, according to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an advocacy group that serves people affected by Don't Ask, Don't Tell. "If service members are deemed to be coming out as gay or lesbian 'voluntarily,' they can expect the military to recoup against them on a prorated basis," says Aaron Tax, the organization's legal director.

About the same time she figured out she would most likely be going to Afghanistan in the not too distant future....
