7 miles from the house. Happens more than you think around here. And you thought YOU had road hazards.
Oh, and one more reason not to pick up hitchhikers.

More/better pics from New Durham FD, if anyone's interested...

bad news: Your car is totalled
good news: You now have 700 lbs of meat to take home.

If it was a bull (in this case, it wasn't) moose, you'd have more than that. That one is a cow, and they average about 700-800 lbs., fully grown.

Is that before its "cleaned"?

Yeah. Bull moose can get to over 1400-1500 lbs.

"Hey Rocky. Watch me pull a VW Rabbit out of my ass."
Sarah Palin would know what to do.
-
Mmmmmm....moose chili or moose stew on a cold winter's day. Nothing quite like it.

You get points for that. :rotf: Glad I didn't have a mouth full of coffee.

Here's my favorite line from the follow-up story in Foster's:
New Durham police were not sure Monday afternoon what became of the moose carcass.
I bet I know. Mmmmmm...pre-tenderized moose steaks.

I had a moose steak from a cow moose, that had been taken by a guy in the deer camp I belong to, a few years ago. He had shot it on the last day of his hunt up in Newfoundland. It was good.

I can't imagine it would be all that--after all, they're pretty lean and gamey after the winter, and likely was calving. But hey, worth a shot, right?

Up to 30 some odd years ago we in the boonies of the North East seldom saw much wild life except for those pesky squeals. Today as we continue to move into their territory we see not just in the boonies but in the middle of town bears, moose, deer raccoons, you name it.
My son who lives a few blocks from down town Newmarket noticed his cat looking out the window and every hair on her body was straight up in the air. He looked out the window to see a Bear licking the grease of the BBQ grill that had not been cleaned .
He spent a week in the hospital when he had a deer in broad daylight run out in front of him when he was on a motorcycle.
That highway that goes north with the signs that keep count of the number of accidents due to Moose gives me the creeps.
It is freaking dangerous to be outside the house when the Bull moose go into rut. These half ton giants will chase a female moose right into your house or garage if you leave the door open. They will try to mate with trucks and cars or try to attack their reflection in a window.
All these dangerous animals have lost a good part of their fear of people.

No, we're expanding into THEIR territory, which is why the encounters seem (but actually aren't really) to be more numerous.
Then there's this:

I saw the moose (what was left of it) on the way to work this morning. Another cow moose. Even those "little cow moose" are pretty damned big.
