SALT LAKE CITY — Senator Robert F. Bennett, an 18-year veteran Republican who had been seeking a fourth term, was stripped of his party’s nomination on Saturday at the state convention here, becoming one of the first Congressional victims of the surging discontent from the Tea Party-infused Republican right.

Mr. Bennett, 76, was outmatched in delegate votes by two relative newcomers despite an enthusiastic endorsement from Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and local Utah hero, and a political pedigree of deep Mormon roots and public service.

He is a spender. Seems to me, and pretty clearly to the TEA Party , that the spending has got to be scaled way  back, and "entitlements" cannot be untouchable. Note here, the "curruption" spending seems to continue unabated.

I suspect what "got" him was his support of Comprehensive Immigration Reform........Utah has a bit of a problem with illegals.......so I've heard.

While he certainly behaved like a baby McCain clone, both the advocates and opponents of sweeping change seem to want to blame/congratulate the TEA Partiers.  I suspect the fact that he broke his own two-term promise and is rapidly getting to be older than pyramid-foundation dirt have just as much to do with it.

As if anybody needed further evidence of why Mitt Romney should be firmly asked to shut up and go back to that liberal hell he perpetuated...

He voted FOR the healthcare bill and for the stimulus bill.  Good Riddens!

Interesting that this is going to make Orrin Hatch take notice, especially now with the Kagan nomination, he might have to think twice about just voting yes to confirm her, so it's all good IMO.

You have a good point.

Being from Idaho Falls, ID which is about 70% Mormon AND the fact that the local cable TV company carried the three Salt Lake network TV stations, I have been quite familiar with Mr. Hatch's politics throughout his career.
Over the last 10 years or so he definitely has "softened" and become more liberal. He needs the boot also - he is too entrenched to be of use as a Conservative voice and vote in the Senate.

The last thing the Repubs need is a slick talking RINO that supported Health Care while Governor.

Bennett was badly anti-2nd Amendment/gun rights.

Anyway, when the NYT "blames" you, you know you're doing the right thing.
