Title: Am I overreacting to this political cartoon. . .
Post by: miskie on May 08, 2010, 12:40:06 PM
The primitives, -in their quest to find racism everywhere- show just how shallow they are <HERE> (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8296032)

Anyway the stupidity is as follows..

Am I overreacting to this political cartoon. . .

. . .on the one hand it makes a good point, but for some reason I'm offended that the two vendors shown in the cartoon as being "America's first line of defense" are two white guys when it was two men of color who alerted police.

Am I being too sensitive? Am I overreacting?

And some commentary - the Snark is strong with Oregone...  :-)

1. Hot dog guy is clearly a person of color. Most likely arab
Yes, the ice cream guy is white, but likely a Russian immigrant

It would be a travesty if this cartoonists didn't represent diversity. It would be worth a death threat almost to offend our liberal senses

and the OP finds the need to make excuses..

8. I noticed it in the Chicago Tribune and in the print edition . . .
. . .the guy in the green shirt looks white. When I posted to jpeg I didn't pay close enough attention to his complexion.

Velveteen Ocelot is looking for a velveteen tombstone for exhibiting signs of logical thought..

2. Yes. It's a cartoon.
Anyhow, the guy with the hotdog looks kind of brown. But it's just a cartoon, intended to depict "generic" street vendors. No need to find offense where none was intended.

Random thoughs seems to have some random thinking going on, as it can't make up its mind..

12. I agree!
Your post is really thoughtful, isn't in the intent? Isn't that what matters? Yet how often do we try to put thoughts about people on them from our own thoughts?

And no offense to the OP, you are thinking about things, I do that also. Sometimes I am able to know that it is intention, and sometimes think as you posted also. So it is really a normal thing people do.

There are many things that could be the intent of the author in that clip, sometimes it is lingo used in some groups, then it is intent, sometimes it is correlation without causation, so each person decides what it means.

rrneck knows racist when it sees it !

3. Maybe a little.
It's not accurate, but it's just a cartoon.

The Skumbag Primitive apparently also judges people by their color.

4. Guy in the green shirt looks kinda brown-ish. n/t

Which makes the cartoon only 'kinda' racist. Believe it or not, there is more to this debate amongst intellectual giants at the link posted above.

I mean WTF?

Can you get any more stupid or insanely ridiculous about something?
This is obviously a case of someone posting something bat shit crazy at a place where they suspect it will be eaten up and applauded.

What it must be like to live such a demented life and yearn for approval in a cesspool of madness.

Lurking DUmmies...you are effing lunatics.

That cartoon does one thing that I am sure will go way over thee goons heads. It depicts the fact that people make a difference not the govt. Obama, Neapolitan, etc got lucky as hell that they caught the guy. Once again the system let us down. Meanwhile Obama and his gang of thugs go round patting themselves on the back.

Imagine their outrage if the cartoon featured people who were notwhite as hotdog / pretzel / unidentifiable food object sellers... FWIW, I don't remember a very high number of those food carts that litter the NYC streets having your stereotypical "Joe Sixpack" running them.

Even our local died in the wool commie paper had one with four panels. One panel had a missile. One had a jet. One had a M16. The last had a a rabbit's foot. The caption read "Anti-terrorism tools."

Because if they had been black then you morons would be bitching that they were being exploited by the evil hot dog and ice cream corporations.
I liked it for what it was. But you all would be miserable if you did not have anything to piss and moan about.

Actually most of  the pushcart vendors in NYC are veterans, and a large percentage are disabled in some way.  When Guiliani was Mayor he started (or greatly expanded) a program that granted them licenses as vendors for essentially no fees, and exempted them from taxes........its a good deal for the vets, as many of them make a really good living from them.

Back in the '80's when I worked in WTC, I used to shoot the breeze with the old guy that had a hot dog cart outside T-1, who lost a leg in Korea.......he said that in a good year, he could clear a hundred grand from that cart.

I'm failing to see why the skin color of the street vendors is important. The point of the cartoon is the same as the adage "professionals built the Titanic, amateurs built the Arc". Thus, it rather praises the ordinary citizen remaining vigilant while doing his job and would portray the hot dog guy positively. So even if he was black, he's the good guy. What did this person see that made it think racism? Racism has become the new bogey man, lurking around every corner ready to pounce.

Both of the hot dog vendors in the cartoon are depicted as white.  The actual guy is black.

That is where the "racism" is, IMO, to the DUmp.
