Let me preface this by saying there's no greater lover of dogs than myself. We had our beloved Sheltie euthanized just a short while back and it was heartbreaking.
But I've watched the video that accompanies this story a couple of days ago on LiveLeak and there's absolutely nothing in it that shows the cops acting in an improper manner. The beginning of the video is naturally from outside the house, so what's going on inside is blocked from view. It's possible they could have, however the video does not show the dog, its behavior or the actual shooting.

Cops Shoot Child’s Dog 7 Times After Finding Marijuana In Family Home
This post originally appeared on Balloon Juice.
Unbelievable:
SWAT team breaks into home, fires seven rounds at family’s pit bull and corgi (?!) as a seven-year-old looks on.
They found a “small amount†of marijuana, enough for a misdemeanor charge. The parents were then charged with child endangerment.
So smoking pot = “child endangerment.†Storming a home with guns, then firing bullets into the family pets as a child looks on = necessary police procedures to ensure everyone’s safety.
(video below the fold)
This is what happens when you give a bunch of cowboy assholes heavy weapons and fill them with a God complex. Although I’m sure Joe Lieberman would suggest we strip this family of their citizenship.
Oddly enough, I doubt the tea partiers screaming about individual liberty will notice this. After all, it isn’t like the cops were going to raise their taxes or provide them with affordable healthcare coverage. They were just shooting his dogs in front of his family and then made up some bullshit excuse to try to take away the kid. No big deal.

First of all, the headline is a complete lie. The dog was shot moments after entry, not after finding the drugs. Also, there's nothing to indicate the child was looking on, which given the context is irrelevant anyway.
Here's the actual story without the batshit spin:
Family questions SWAT drug search that led to dog’s death
By Brennan David
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
A man arrested on suspicion of drug charges and child endangerment said he is concerned with the actions of police who shot two dogs they described as “aggressive†while serving a drug-related search warrant at his home earlier this month in southwest Columbia.
Police arrested Jonathan E. Whitworth, 25, of 1501 Kinloch Court on Feb. 11 on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and second-degree child endangerment.
A police SWAT team entered Whitworth’s residence around 8:30 p.m. suspecting a large amount of marijuana at the location, police spokeswoman Officer Jessie Haden said. SWAT members encountered a pit bull upon entry, held back and then fatally shot the dog, which officers said was acting in an uncontrollably aggressive manner.

97. Nope! Vadawg got banned.
He was the absolute worst one in this regard. Thankfully, that particular POS is no longer with us.
God forbid anyone should bring objectivity into these things. I can see why he was banned at DU.

I would lose my mind if someone shot either one of my dogs.
I bet this kid is going to have a hard time trusting cops in the future.
Maybe he'll have a hard time trusting Dad to keep drugs out of the house.

19. God I'd love to see these assholes have THEIR homes raided and pets killed.
Well... I'd hate to see the pets killed. These men are a symptom of a horrible illness this nation is suffering. They could never imagine how horrible it would be to experience what they do to other people daily.
They truly deserve a taste of their own medicine.
Who's the judge who signed that warrant?
What are the names of these assholes... especially the gun-toting ***** that shot harmless animals?
Why? Are you going to write them a sternly-worded letter?

A lot of the cops are hardcore fundies. When they do this they believe they are enforcing their morality, and therefore the right thing. Even if innocent people are shot.

105. Just wondering
why a SWAT team would go for such a stupid little investigation. Do they always turn out for potential drug busts?
They had reason to believe the suspect was in possession of distribution weights you dumbass, which you would know if you looked any further than your DUmmy brethren's assholes.

I read about this story from someplace else and the dogs were caged, I don't care who knows but if ANYONE shots my pets I would do everything in my power to put them down.
-
I've been Googling that and the only place I've found that allegation besides the DUmp is from a poster at a NORML blog and some hit-and-run crazy at infowars.com.
Nothing in this follow-up article mentions it:
http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2010/05/06/swat-raid-prompts-police-review-policy/
Or this:
http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2010/may/06/chief-details-swat-incident/
The "caged' part sounds like something made up by moonbats.
The dogs being shot was unfortunate, but I don't blame the cops for defending themselves if self-defense was the case. I'd rather place the burden of responsibility on the lawbreaker who precipitated the police action to begin with.
-
Well, for what it's worth, that thread certainly let's us know exactly who the big-time potheads on DU are.
-
I bet they'd have no problem using SWAT teams to round up all the "white males in their 40's".
Let see, this admin wants to track all cellphones, read all emails and know what websites everyone has visited for the past 2 years. Oh and monitor you checking accounts, assassinate US citizens et al....
and Bush was the problem. lol.

Well that figures. Along with Fire_Medic_Dave the three of them never said anything anti-Democrat, they were just voices of reason who pointed out logical flaws in some of the more goofy threads, especially those having to do with law enforcement. So much for the "we take Democrats of all stripes here" BS. I guess being crazier than a sprayed roach is a requirement for DU membership rather than a suggested prerequisite.

I have yet to see them complain about the administration's intentions to seize 401ks (http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=36823)
I have yet to see them complain about the FCC doing net neutrality in defiance of court order (http://www.redstate.com/neil_stevens/2010/05/05/the-fcc-grabs-power-unlawfully-to-appease-a-fringe-movement/)
I have yet to see them complain about the administration forcing people to buy health insurance (for all their bitching and moaning about corporatism they are awfully quiet on that).
The tears the DUmbshits are crying are crocodile tears.

I have to say it does seem rather bizarre for the State to bring a bozo charge like '2nd Degree Child Endangerment" into the mix after no-knocking their way in with no apparent opposition and blasting the shit out of the dog, which is a whole Hell of lot more 'endangering' than anything they can prove on the parents, especially since they apparently came up with next to nothing on the contraband they were suppposed to be going in after.
Pretty much smacks of a somewhat cynical if ham-handed after-the-fact attempt to protect themselves from being sued over excessive force issues.

That's kind of what I thought when I first read the story. Having some drugs and paraphernalia around is child endangerment , but firing weapons in the same house isn't?
