The repeated abdication of responsibility by the Obama administration from preventing nuclear non-proliferation leaves it on Israel's shoulders.
excerpt
So much for US President Barack Obama’s famed powers of persuasion. At the UN’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference that opened this week, the Obama administration managed to lose control over the agenda before the conference even started.
Obama administration officials said they intended to use the conference as a platform to mount international pressure on Iran to stop its illicit nuclear proliferation activities. But even before the conference began, with a little prodding from Egypt, the administration agreed that instead of focusing on Iran, the conference would adopt Iran’s chosen agenda: attacking Israel for its alleged nuclear arsenal.
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that US officials were conducting negotiations with Egypt about Egypt’s demand that the NPT review conference call for sanctions against Israel for refusing to join the NPT as a non-nuclear state. The Journal quoted a senior administration official involved in the discussions saying, “We’ve made a proposal to them [Egypt] that goes beyond what the US has been willing to do before.â€
Among other possibilities, that proposal may have included a US agreement to appoint a UN envoy responsible for organizing a UN conference calling for the greater Middle East to become a nuclear-free zone. In diplomatese, “Middle East nuclear-free zone†is a well-accepted euphemism for stripping Israel of its purported nuclear capability while turning a blind eye to Iranian, Syrian and other Islamic nuclear weapons programs. Egypt’s demand, which it convinced more than 100 members of the Non-Aligned Bloc to sign onto, is for Israel to open its nuclear installations to international inspectors as a first step towards unilateral nuclear disarmament.
On Wednesday, the US joined the other four permanent members of the Security Council in signing a statement calling for a nuclear-free Middle East and urging Israel, Pakistan and India to accede to the NPT as non-nuclear states. Following the US’s lead, on Thursday Yukiya Amano, the new director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, wrote a letter to IAEA member states asking for their suggestions for how to convince Israel to sign the NPT.

It's everything Obama wanted it to be.
Hell, I can see him ordering US assets to engage Israeli planes or sending Tehran real-time intel...or both.
"I did it for peace," he'll say and the left will lap it up.

I think that Israel is smarter than to let the US know its intentions. IF Israel strikes Tehran, it will be done and over with before the rest of the world knows.

Except we'll be able to see it as it happens. Israel is too small to hide from the OSR.

I disagree.
Iran learned from the Osirik reactor attack. They may be assholes but they aren't stupid assholes.
-
But . . . the Israeli Navy has three Type-209 U-Boats (yes, the Germans built them) with a nuclear-strike capacity. One of them is always on station off the Persian Gulf. I think that Oman has given them basing rights.

Virtually all of Iran's weapons sites are seriously hardened underground........I'm no expert, but I would be more inclined to expect a SPECOPS coordinated ground attack on selected sites than employing air or naval assets, (of course inless Iran lobs something their way first).......
A friend of mine in the ME not so jokingly commented to me that "every fourth Iranian is a Mossad agent".......

Israel uses the Dolphin class (http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/israel/sub.htm) which is larger than both the Type 209 and Type 212.

Okay, I had the type wrong. :o
They are nuclear-capable.

Those SPECOPS troops would be willing to give their life to save their nation and they might be doing that. They will hopefully have a lot of "distractions" from the air and naval assets.

Israel also has ballistic missiles. There is speculation that they might use them if they feel an air attack is too risky, but it is just speculation. http://www.haaretz.com/news/study-israel-may-attack-iran-nuclear-sites-with-ballistic-missiles-1.272290

Yep. Those are second strike weapons. If Tel Aviv gets nuked, Tehran, Damascus, Tripoli, Cairo, Islamabad, Mecca and others could be wiped away too.

Interesting discussion on this subject.....video here:

Any sub with a standard 21" torpedo tube is nuclear-capable, really, if the owner has the aerospace industry ability to copy a Tomahawk and can build a modern nuke warhead.
The Iranian nuclear program is not just hardened, it is also dispersed and a lot of what we think we know about it is not completely reliable since there are likely to be both major facilities we don't know about as well as facilities that aren't as critical as we have been led to believe through deception plans. In other word there is not one known and unhardened node, there are several hardened and redundant nodes, some of which are false and some of which may not have yet been identified at all.

They probably have a lot of fake nuclear bunkers.
