Arizona Ethnic Studies Classes Banned, Teachers With Accents Can No Longer Teach English
Arizona's new immigration law is just about crime, its supporters say, but given that the state's new education policy equates ethnic studies programs with high treason, they may not be using the commonly accepted definition of "crime."
Under the ban, sent to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer by the state legislature Thursday, schools will lose state funding if they offer any courses that "promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment of a particular race or class of people, are designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group or advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals."
Who wudda thunk it? Imagine, DUmmies if you can, a world where people are taught they are all equal individuals, it's easy if you try.
As ThinkProgress notes, the Tuscon Unified School District's popular Mexican-American studies department is the target here. The state superintendent charges that the program exhibits "ethnic chauvinism."
Imagine, a school where racism isn't permitted to be taught, I dare ya.
Meanwhile, in a move that was more covert until the Wall Street Journal uncovered it, the Arizona Department of Education has told schools that teachers with "heavy" or "ungrammatical" accents are no longer allowed to teach English classes.
Imagine a world where people that can't speak english aren't allowed to teach those that desperately need to learn it, yes you can!
Imagine that, Arizona doesn't want real institutionalized racism in it's classroom, and wants English teachers to be able to actually be able to teach it. Horrors! I tell you, horrors!

This law is in line with federal law, as Rush Limbaugh pointed out. As was the immigration law.

What is the problem?
You can teach about ethnic history and stuff without breaking those rules can't you?

Teachers With Accents Can No Longer Teach English
You mean they can't say "choo" instead of "you" no more?
Oh the horror. :rotf:

Wait a minute, there is a bunch of illiterate ebonic speakers in some places too, this isn't about hispanics.

Who in the hell wants to be taught English from a real-life "Chico Escuela"?

Agreed. i.e.-certain people say "axe" instead of "ask".

If Michigan tried to pass this, half the teachers in Detroit would have to be let go.
-
I think this is a very sensible law, and I'm falling more in love with AZ every minute.

2. Next step - Arizona will buy the new Texas dictated school books
That re-write history and science to reflect a fundamentalist right wing agenda.
Progressives need to get more aggressive to fight this crap.
And we're ready for ya.

Has anyone consulted the superintendent of school boards for Detroit yet?
