Title: Santa Clara CA bans toys in fast food (Happy Meals)

Idiots think toys make kids fat

http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_14968786?source=most_viewed&nclick_check=1

By a 3-2 vote, Santa Clara County supervisors today approved the nation's first childhood obesity ordinance targeting toy giveaways with fast-food meals.

The ordinance would prohibit restaurants from giving away toys with kids' meals that are high in fat, sugar and calories.

The ban's reach will be very limited. It will only affect restaurants in the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County such as San Martin.

Supervisors Ken Yeager, Liz Kniss and Dave Cortese voted for the ordinance. Supervisors Don Gage and George Shirakawa opposed it.

The ordinance will return to the board May 11 for a final vote. It will take effect 90 days after that, but during that time restaurants will have the chance to offer alternatives to the ordinance. If the board does not accept any of the alternatives, the law will begin at the end of the 90 days

I would have thought that collectors of those crappy toys accounted for more sales than kids that really wanted them.

When are people going to just say NO! to crap like this and tell the "supervisors" if they want to come stand at the drive-thru windows and snatch toys out of kids' hands, then bring it on?

Just because a law is "passed" doesn't mean it can be enforced.  Just say NO!

I'd have to see the actual text of the law....  But just charge 1 cent for the toys.

Or...  just tell them to go pound sand.

So what is the point of this?  Most of Santa Clara County is incorporated, so this is going to have minimal, if any effect, on anything, let alone childhood obesity rates.

What about cereals that have toys inside or worse, those that involve mail-in offers that involve saving box tops?

Just who the Hell are these people that think they can dictate to Adults what to feed their kids.?

Next step, 4-5 Muslims on town council and I cannot now buy Bacon or any Pork product in local stores.  Walmart can no longer sell sleeveless T's for woman.  Big ad campanes for sexier, cover up woman, let the men use their imagination.?

When people decide what foods restaurants can sell and what is included in the meal, then grocery stores are the next target.

Most of us will become criminals for buying a pound of bacon on the black market, the culture of Pig picking will now go underground.  Culture-----You raise a child as you wish, religion, clothing and food.

Peta will join in, the sale of turkeys at Thanksgiving, the tradition of Lamb and Ham at Easter or Passover ---  gone.

It is mean and out right nasty to dictate what a private business can sell.   Millions of senior citizens cannot eat a huge burger at a take out place.  They order a kids meal, save the toy and place them in the grandkids stockings at Xmas.

Interesting that we a country of LAWS can have to adhere to a minority of crackpots to make these LAWS.

Vesta's right....as this is a slippery slope and we, as consumers, are standing at the top.

Just because I voted for a county commissioner, state rep, or US rep or senator, I didn't agree to give up my free will and allow them to decide how I should eat, what I should eat, and what I should feed my kids!

When my kids were little, they loved Happy Meals. They loved the toys even more. Chicken McNuggets, fries (that mom helped eat) and a small Sprite. They didn't come home and eat another meal. The Happy Meal was their meal...not a snack! They were full after a Happy Meal.

When a parent keeps handing food to a child, the child will eat it, particularly if they see the parent eating.

Personally, I think Home Ec needs to be put back in the school curriculum in middle school and be mandatory like it was when I was a kid, only make it mandatory for both girls and boys. Teach these kids how to cook and what is healthy, and how to feed themselves something that they made themselves rather than always getting takeout. Learn the food pyramid (right after it's changed to making chocolate the base  :-) ) and how to mix the different foods so that not only is it healthy eating, but that the plated food is pleasing to the eye, nose and palate. There is nothing "wrong" with any one food type as long as it is eaten in moderation.

Why not reward the kids for healthy choices, instead of punishing the bad decisions. Seems Bass Ackwards, to me. :hammer:   Or better yet, leave well enough alone.

Say what Tiny1, who rewards a child for going hungry because their parents present them with Pork chops, mashed potatoes and a vegie or salad.  Is all this fat and carobs good for the kid, would you take away the chops and potatoes from the kid and feed them just the salad ???   Do we expect a young child to know what is good or bad for them to eat

Kids do not buy , cook or decide the family menu.   They sit at the table and eat what is given to them.  In a poor family the Ra men with frozen peas and perhaps another veg is the evening  meal.

For some kids going to a burger joint is heaven on earth.  The little toy they get is just a free- -be that reminds them of the visit.

Humans have a set basis on their food needs.   We found this out in Nan when the hospitalized children could not survive on our diets.  They were allergic to lactose and the carton of milk they drank made them deathly ill.

It isn't government's place to punish or reward any kind of legal behavior.  It's government's place to get the hell out of our lives.

Respectfully, not in my home.  We asked our kids what they wanted to eat.  I taught them how to eat properly, from the beginning.  My youngest, to this day, will not eat McDonalds.  I am not a wealthy person, and never have been.  We have done the Ramen and Bologna sandwich thing to death.  But, instead of my kids paying the price, I opened up the ground and grew healthy food.  I still do it today, and only one 22 year old at home.  I fished to bring them protein, and hunted small game, also.  If you want to eat well, you can.  I pick wild blackberries and make a fabulous cobbler.  Cheap.
I don't believe that a pork chop, mashed potatoes and a veg are bad food.  As a matter of fact, I think we are too concerned about what the kids eat, and not enough about the level of physical activity.
When I was young, (when the Earth was new),we ate Fat back, fried squash, chicken fried steak with gravy, Pancakes with syrup, bacon, and fried eggs, etc and we were in way better shape than the kids today.
And maybe, if we trained our kids to cook, and plan their own meals, they would be healthier. I don't know about where you live, but in rural NC,our 12 year olds can out cook my Mom.
While I appreciate your opinion, I must say that we have failed at our responsibility to make our children self-sufficient.

I am not talking about the Gooberment.  I am talking about the parents.  That's whose responsibility it is.  The idiots in Washington can barely lead their own lives responsibly.
To expand on my point, The problem exists that our kids are fat.  Why?  Mickie Ds has been around since I was a kid, and we were much healthier than the kids, today. Why?
Because, instead of handing our kids a Game Boy, our folks handed us a baseball and bat.  Instead of a lawn tractor, we push mowed the lawn with a non power spinning blade mower.  We helped in the garden, washed the car with a rag and a hose,  shoveled snow with a shovel, not a snow blower.  We rode bicycles, not four wheelers.
Yes,you are correct, Washington needs to worry about other things and get out of our lives.  That does not change the fact that WE are responsible for the condition our kids are in.  I thought we were the side that is all about personal responsibility.

Once, when I was a kid, we lived in a house with only one bathroom.

There were times when my folks did not know where the next meal was coming from.  Us kids would have shrunk into our shoes if we had complained.  I remember my Mom crying because we were forced to eat beans and cornbread for a couple of days.  We loved it.  Still do.
When I was 9,we were struggling, and our next door neighbor,an elderly gentleman of about 80 years, offered to take me fishing.  I felt like Superman when I brought home enough fish to make two meals for all of us.  Ever since, when times get tough, the "tough" goes fishing.
We have allowed our kids to get soft. I am aware that we were just trying to make life easier for them, but I think we made matters worse.

We should have been so lucky to have one phone and one TV. And one Mom. No, when I was a kid.....

We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

I don't think it was meant that way.....if you reread the thread...it went off-topic before and after your post.

You will find that it happens a lot at this forum and the responses following one post is not necessarily responding to the previous post.....

It can get confusing...and sometimes requires reading back a couple of posts to have it make sense.

It was a one-upmanship thing.  No one is making fun of poverty (yours or anyone's).   We laugh a lot here.  No one is trying to hurt feelings.  It's lighthearted fun.  Like many moons ago when I said I use to have to eat toaster crumbs.

Yeah, most of us have also lived in the same situation at some point.  And surviving it makes us proud.  Joking about it gives us a smile.

Tiny, try not to take anything personally, its usually all in good fun. If you take things too seriously your going to freak out when you come across a ptarmigan-Bunny battle royale. (hehehe)

I, too, am very poor. Trust me, I never talk about it, but I am. Doesn't mean I can't make fun of bobolink or the welfare "somebody owes me" queen with 15 kids. Or especially making fun of leftist bouncies, those are always so mockable.

If I was mocking YOU, I would have quoted YOU. (Like I'm doing here.)

I did not quote you, I quoted IassaFTots.

It was also a Monty Python "Four Yorkshiremen" skit quote. (By the way, everyone, good job on completely missing that.  )

You might want to learn the ins and outs of the board before you go off on a drama queen tangent, they don't seem to last long around here. Also, you'll need a thicker skin.
