Thank you, Dear Reader, he of the big ears.
Some primitives hate the idea of a new gas tax, some love it, some think it's too little and still at least one prim has the great idea to go ahead and nationalize the oil industry. Give the fools in DC time, DUmmies.
Primitives haven't met a tax they don't love. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4345298)

Senators consider gasoline tax as part of climate bill
Source: Los Angeles Times
Estimates put it in the range of 15 cents a gallon. Some oil companies are on board with the plan because it would cost them far less than other proposals to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Reporting from Washington
Leading voices in the Senate are considering a new tax on gasoline as part of an effort to win Republican and oil industry support for the energy and climate bill now idling in Congress.
The tax, which according to early estimates would be in the range of 15 cents a gallon, was conceived with the input of several oil companies, including Shell, BP and ConocoPhillips, and is being championed by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
It is shaping up as a critical but controversial piece in the efforts by Graham, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) to write a climate bill that moderate Republicans could support. Along those lines, the bill will also include an expansion of offshore oil drilling and major new incentives for nuclear power plant construction.
Environmental groups have long advocated gasoline taxes to reduce fossil fuel consumption; the oil industry has spent heavily in recent years to fight taxes, which it says would harm consumers.
In this case, though, several oil companies like the tax because it figures to cost them far less than other proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including provisions in the climate bill the House passed last year.

2. That would impact the lower classes at the worst possible time
Despite the government's insistence the the recession is over, its still going full bore for everyone below the top 10% of incomes.
Are these people brain dead
Wow, cluebat comes out in the first couple of posts. That's gotta be some kind of record. Too bad the primitives, as usual, ignore it.

37. Here is my alternative - tax every CorpoRATion that produces essentially
Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 06:34 PM by truedelphi
Big polluting non-essential items.
Monsanto - Tax 'em.
Let them pay for the years of Multiple sclerosis caused by their Formaldehyde containing product "RoundUp." **
Proctor and Gamble - Tax 'em!
Does anyone really need their endless supplies of benzene and formaldehyde marketed to us as "Air fresheners"?
Honeywell Big war time industry. Tax 'em.
Same with Raytheon, Halliburton, DynCorp, same with all the military contractors - tax 'em. Tax 'em ALL at 40% minimum.
**Monsanto lied through their sweet little fangs when they applied for their license to sell RoundUp over the counter. They told EPA that RoundUp was merely Glyphosate, PolyOxyethyeleneamine and Water.
When in reality, without an "aldehyde" of some sort in the mix,
glyphosate cannot be sprayed aerially.
Also, The Catholic Church and the Mormon church, and every other Church that has people preaching hatred against other human beings - Tax 'em. 40% minimum, with some of the funds to be used to offset the pain caused by pedophile priests.
Tax, tax, tax. Don't think about shrinking government.

6. You ween people off of it by taxing it to the max, I favor this plan...
I hope it is a real high tax, a dollar or so per gallon, not just the $.15
Well alrighty then.

10. That's my point-- Ween them off it to _what_?
Not all of us have public transport systems to ride, in fact the people with that luxury are in the minority in this country. We need some feasible alternative fuels (something beyond this ethanol scam) to power cars. They aren't going away.
There's the cluebat again. Is this the beginning of attempts to bring the DUmp back to reality?

21. Not to mention that this means that EVERYTHING wil be priced higher.
Food and other necessities have to be transported, and this tax will make everything cost more.
Ladies and gentlemen! We've hit the cluebat hat trick! Are they coming around?

18. What difference would a "Windfall Profit Tax" on oil industry make ... ?????
A considerable difference I would say --
and we could follow that up with NATIONALIZING the oil industry!
Guess not. Oh well.

35. Probably no the best thing to do now that the recession is ending.
How about tax the oil companies? But actually now that I think about it either way our gas will go up so... Maybe make a law that says prices cannot be artificially increased due to new taxes. ha like that would happen.
It is? Really? Maybe on Skin's Island where everything is subsidized, but in the real world, not so much.

this is the greatest idea since sliced dirt.
absolutely raise gas taxes. as high as possible, please. all in the name of the mythical "global warming."
oh please, please, please.
come election time in november we can then correct this.
big time...

I guess 2 things never occurred to truedelphi about his "tax the Corporations" scheme.
1. Corporations, evil and otherwise, are already taxed at about 36-38%....
2. Corporations don't "pay" taxes. Every penny of every tax paid in this country comes from one source: YOUR WALLET!
Damned DUmmies can't see the forest for the trees, but they don't care, they like trees.... :hammer:

What is with idiots Repubs like Graham. Let's kick these dumb asses out when they run for reelection.

It's part of that whole "collegiality" (sp?) thing that RINOs practice in the Senate. They seem to think that it will help them get re-elected.

They'll end up doing the same thing that is happening to the City of Houston Water.
They raised prices to get people to 'conserve' the water. People started conserving water, NOW the City of Houston is going to RAISE the water rate because they aren't making enough revenue to support themselves!
I weep for my country.

Hey Lindsey, go back to blowin' McLame and leave my wallet alone! I got a great idea, lets make you fools walk to frikkin' work! From SC, barefoot, ya frikkin' dolt!
Unemployment at 10% and these asshats want to make it so you can't afford to look for work! Great idea, Nero! Just extend unemployment benefits until ya kick the bucket! Yeah, that's the ticket! Unemployment for life! That'll get the economy going!
This POS wouldn't even make it into the sack with the rest of the hammers! How stooooopid can ya get? Just when I think Lindsey has scraped the bottom of the intelligence barrel, he drills a frikkin' hole in it and lets what little brains he had leak out!

B. Heusein Obama is printing or borrowing $5,000,000,000,000.00 per day to create his socialist utopia. Someone has to pay for that.

That is right corporations do not pay taxes they merely collect taxes. Every penny that Obama plans on forcing them to pay gets passed on to the consumer.

That is why Corporations are falling over themselves joining the Global Compact to support carbon taxes.

raise all taxes (in fact, put more taxes on everything!) and give all workers a "living wage" of, oh i don't know... $50/hr.
yay!
i love being a progressive liberal. the answers are so easy.
of course, a loaf of bread will cost $60. a gallon of gas $100.
but what the hell... its the thought that counts, not the logic.

That is no different than whats going on right now, with different numbers. They really think that the government can spend more than we can even with its HUGE overhead. Somehow they seem to think more comes out than goes in. Or that this is somehow possible.

There are two great things about both the VAT and the proposed gas tax.
One, they aren't progressive taxes, so they are directly connected to consumption, which is a vast improvement over raising the same revenue via the income tax system (Unfortunately, with the Federal government's unquenchable thirst for money to fund Democrat vote-buying entitlements, there's no chance of the income tax being supplanted, they'd just be additional taxes, which is the mushc larger downside).
Two, since they aren't progressive taxes, they would both bite the Democrat base at least as heavily as anyone else, alienate them, and arouse all the opposition to undreamed-of levels flushing many of the SOBs out of their seats in Congress.

And the wailing and gnashing of teeth would be a beautiful thing to behold, IMO.

You just may be on to something here!! If you make $30,000 a year then the Govment can give you $170,000 to make it a nice even 200k. Then when they tax you $180,000 you won't complain because they gave you the 170 to start with AND they supply everything you need to live with the 180 except, food, gas, housing, cars fuel and all those other things they can tax. It's a brilliant plan!!! ::)

There is a good chance "the poor" will get a VAT rebate or something.

Yep! Why not just make us all millionaires! Then we could pay taxes, not have to work, and it would still be cheaper than what the pres and congress critters have in store for the country!
Damn, bein' a liberal is frikkin' easy!
-
The government could give every one a million a year but te tax rate would be around 150% at least.

Some liberal congressman mght get ideas.... :mental:

I don't think the Democraps want to touch a VAT before the Nov. elections with a 10 foot pole. Afterwards, the Repubs will gain enough seats to shoot down this stupid idea.

Out here (Cali) PG&E diden't raise prices (elec, gas) but ran a campaign to conserve. Now that people have, and cut their profits, they want to raise the household rates while lowering industrial rates.
Once again, We the People have to support another industry.

I was quickly perusing the DUmp once, and didn't have time to bring it over, but someone posted an OP with something like "So-and-So says that Corporations don't pay taxes, people do." The responses were along the lines of "Can't be. Can't freakin be." They couldn't wrap their heads around the concept of corps as tax collectors. I'll go see if I can find it again.

They are too stupid to understand the concept of "passing on the cost".

It's because they don't have the capacity to understand business and how it works. They 'feel'. Their feelings tell them business shouldn't run like that. Profit is a four letter word to them and something to be avoided at all costs. Everyone should make the same pay from the Owner to the CEO to the floor hand to the janitor to the high school kid who is emptying waste baskets and cutting the grass. Everyone should be equal from the time they pop out of the womb to the time they are put in the ground.
Sad really. With people like that in our country we can't do what needs to be done.

I'm willing to expel them, but who do we wish that kind of suffering on? Castro doesn't even deserve these idiots! I know, how 'bout Chavez? They luv, luv, luv, him anyway! Just ask 'em!

Consider it yes...voting for it would be political suicide
