Which of the 13 Dem Senators up for re-election this year are safe?
Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas
Barbara Boxer of California
Michael Bennet of Colorado
Daniel Inouye of Hawaii
Barbara Mikulski of Maryland
Harry Reid of Nevada
Kirsten Gillibrand of New York
Chuck Schumer of New York
Ron Wyden of Oregon
Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania
Patrick Leahy of Vermont
Patty Murray of Washington
Russ Feingold of Wisconsin
Lincoln's not. No great loss. Boxer's not and that would be a great loss. Bennet's not. Reid's not. Gillibrand's not, Specter's not and Feingold's not.
And that's just the incumbents. A republican will win Indiana. A republican will replace Dorgan. A republican will take Joe Biden's old seat. A republican may well take the Illinois seat.
Not looking good.

4. Murray is starting out in good shape
But Dino Rossi is capable of running a REALLY slimy, viciously negative campaign so we'll have to wait and see how that goes.
Could a Rethug win in a West Coast people's republic?

6. My view is that Murray is safer
than people are worrying about. But fear gets people motivated so it's OK with me if folks want to worry. Of course if Patty is shifting right and triangulating positions based on fear, that's not a good thing. And sadly she does.

5. Feingold would be safe if Thompson does not run against him.
I think he can beat Thompson, be the question is would his reelection be "safe".

8. No, Boxer is safe. There is no way that Campbell will defeat her.
Rasmussen, which leans so far to the right to be in danger of tipping over, only has Campbell two points behind Boxer in their latest poll.
That means Boxer really has at least an 8 point edge on him.
She also is at least 8 points ahead of Fiorina and DeVore.

10. Lincoln, Bennet, maybe Gillibrand and Reid
That's it, the rest are safe and Gillibrand and Reid probably are too. The only reason I add Bennet is because he was appointed, iirc. Incumbents are safe unless they **** up as badly as Lincoln did.

11. Good Lord, THIS on DEMOCRATIC Underground?
I'm sorry, but I am really surprized to see something like this on DU.
It seems to me to be very, very defeatist ("a republican will win Indiana"!!!???) For heaven's sake, it is APRIL. A lot can happen between now and November.
Perhaps if you would have coupled your apparent acceptance of defeat with a call to re-double our efforts to ASSURE that all Democrats up for re-election would be safe, I would not be reacting this way.

12. It all comes down to Boxer/Feingold/ Murray/Gillibrand + Lieberman
In the current environment (or one tilted more towards the Republicans) Lincoln/Bennet/Reid/Specter are probably going to lose, and we are probably going to lose open seats in Indiana, Illinois, Delaware, an North Dakota. That leaves it 51D, 49R.
If Boxer, Feingold, Gillibrand, and Muray all win, we are fine.
If Boxer loses, or Thompson gets in the race and defeats Feingold, or Pataki gets in the race and defeats Gillibrand, or Rossi gets in the race and defeats Murray, it becomes 50-50, giving Lieberman the option to become a Republican and change control of the Senate.
If two of those 4 lose, it is over.
Of the four, I have seen recent polls where Boxer beats any of her opponents, Gillibrand beats Pataki, and Murray beats Rossi (though by very small margins). Unfortunately, Thompson seems to be beating Feingold in all recent polls I have seen.
We could enjoy some historic freudenschade this fall.

Chuck E Cheese Shummer is the only one thats likely to keep his seat.
-
I wish Leahy was in danger, but I haven't heard of anyone challenging him.
-
Yes, all the conventional wisdom assumes that Chuckee Cheese is safe and snug, which frustrates me no end because I just can't stand that creature. Why do people like him enough to keep electing him? He's an asshole. Aren't the feminists mad at him for calling the stewardess a bitch? If not, why not?
I do know that his approval rating has at least dropped. For years, it was in the solid 60's. Last poll I read had him at 51 or so.

I'd expect that someone will emerge soon to take on ol' "Rhymes With Chuck" Schumer. The tsunami is building, my friends. 10.5 and 114.5 are my over/unders for the elections this fall, as in the numbers of seats that the Republicans are going to take from the Dems in the Senate and House, respectively--and I'm betting the "over."

This will be defined by; If the conservative opponent mentions the democrat voted for the HCR bill. That will be NASTY, EVIL, RETHUGLICAN politics.

It's Vermont. He won't be, and you know that as well as I do. Too many Birkenstock-wearing, tree-hugging, Phish-listening, unwashed hippie moonbats that moved up there and never left.

Gov. Douglas may have a shot if he wants to go for it. Same with the Gov of Hawaii who is term-limited.

Oh, you said a mouthful there, zora. Diving from healthcare into nuclear proliferation (Where even the Left is very uneasy about the Boy King's naivete) and then into cap-'n'-trade this Summer will undoubtedly make April seem like Obama's salad days by the time we get to November!

Not to mention that they're getting absolutely nowhere on the jobs bill, are blowing off the budget as long as they can, and trying to ram amnesty for illegals down the throats of the American public.
You think people are pissed now? Just wait until you try to wave the Magic Negro Wand (TM) over 20 million illegals.

In the governor's race a few years back, Rossi had all but won and then "surprise" a box of uncounted votes was found in a basement somewhere that just happened to have enough votes to put Gregoire on top. Rossi won in 2 recounts but the third hand count found extra votes. It went to court and the judge acknowledged thousands of votes were illegal but didn't prove fraud (yeah, right). It was blatant and slimy and the dems got away with it. It left a bitter taste in the state. Everyone knew the election was stolen. Here in the PacNW nasty and evil means trying to keep elections from being stolen by the dems. It was pretty much like the movie Black Sheep without the outrageously funny brother.

Yep 1 terrorist attack with the ensuing investigation showing it happened due to the inattentiveness on the part of the 'rats and it all goes down the drain in November, for many many years to come.
Any one of those on your "safe" list can have a nice toe-tapping, baby momma or page scandal brew up.
Putin could get uppity and bo could fold.
The possibilities are endless. It's a looooong way to November and having a D after your name makes you have to be cleaner than pure snow.

Just have to make a small correction here. It's $25 for a pot of tea. That's for folks who "are on a budget."

That, my dear, is one freakin' scary story. You have to wonder how they get by with stuff like that.

That's an illustration of why judicial appointments are kind of important. If not key in that particular contest, the general point still holds.

If I'm remembering the story correctly, it went to state court in Washington. In that state, damned near all bench seats are "non-partisan" elected positions (2 or 4 year terms). John Carlson and the Evergreen Freedom Foundation do real yeoman's work putting together crib sheets of representative rulings from each incumbent judge so that those interested can be informed when they go into the voting booth; but the massive Dim'Rat wins west of the Cascades are evidence enough that not enough people are interested enough in making themseslves informed to make a huge difference.
