Afghan President Hamid Karzai speaks to tribal leaders in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, on Sunday.

Kandahar, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Plans to drive the Taliban from Afghanistan's second-largest city and surrounding districts will start only when the plans have the support of the population, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Monday.

Karzai has told tribal leaders in the Kandahar region, the Taliban's traditional stronghold, that he would hold back the NATO offensive until he had their backing. His insistence on that support drew a fresh expression of frustration from the White House on Monday, but Karzai told CNN, "We run this country," referring to the Afghan people.

"The operation in Kandahar will not begin, will not go on, unless and until we have the full trust of the people of Kandahar for it and we have the full approval of the people of Kandahar for it, and where we have made sure after they've given us the approval that this operation will bring them more security, better livelihood and improved governance," he said.

----------

This isn't shaping up too well.  Karzai has apparently somehow figured out we are bailing on him in about a year, and seems to be worried about what will happen to his ass then, instead of listening to the Great Leader's calm voice of reassurance and inspirational goodness.

How many allies has Obama dissed since taking office??

UK, Honduras, Israel, India and Afghanistan are just the top ones. China isn't happy about the debt and I am sure he will find a way to anger Japan and other countries.

Some of those old fashion English will never admit to being a part of the UK! They cannot stand the idea that they are the same country as the Welsh!

One-quarter of my family line is Welsh (Well, plus some Native Americans they met over here) and believe me, that goes double the other way for the Welsh.  The one thing that is a certainty about the Welsh is that they never, never, never forget a slight.

It's funny, because they accused republicans of dissing other countries but at least Bush dissed the bad and annoying ones like Iraq, France, North Korea among others.

This guys kisses the arse of our enemies and pisses off our friends. If I were president, the only 2 countries, outside of North America, who I would be concerned with are England (UK) and Israel.

Can you blame them?  If I'm the leader of Russia, China, Iran, No. Korea, etc... or terrorists outfits like al-Qaeda, then I've got to figure with Dear Leader in office I can do whatever I want and he'll just sit there and take it.  And he won't do anything.  When your own citizens know you're weak, there's going to definately be problems from other countries and groups.

Yes, USA4ME, basically the problem seems to be that Karzai is about ten times smarter than your average Democrat or Congressman, and so is afflicted with the ability to look ahead and see what is coming beyond the next-paycheck timeframe, and structures his actions and positions accordingly.

Things were much simpler back when we used to just shoot leaders and install our stooge in his place.

Unfortunately someone learned how to play a slightly modified version of that game and installed a stooge as head of our government.

Someone needs to tell the O-bots that Skittles don't come in chocolate.

And DAT, Karzai is interested in one thing--KARZAI, nothing more, whether his survival is political or personal.  He didn't stand up against the Soviets.  He agreed to be the Taliban's ambassador to the UN until they got labeled as a terrorist gov't.  Now that he rightly sees us pulling the rug out from under him once again, he rightly sees the writing on the wall and is going to make whatever deal he can to save his own ass, literally and figuratively.

IOW, he's no better than any of the rest of them on that dirtpile.

Couldn't agree more, Sparky!  Thing is, it has apparently become obvious to Karzai and his finely-honed survival instincts that the Obama plan to pull out of Afghanistan after a programmed one-year show of plussing up support is not going to work out well for him personally and probably not for the democratic-at-least-by-Afghan-standards government he heads.
