Barack Obama's claim to be the candidate of racial unity was challenged yesterday by a video of his pastor and spiritual mentor condemning Hillary Clinton for being white.
Footage of the Rev Jeremiah Wright's fiery sermons dominated television network coverage after tapes were acquired from the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where Mr Obama has worshipped for 20 years.
In his February 10 address Mr Wright said: "Hillary was not a black boy raised in a single-parent home. Barack was.
"Barack knows what it means to be a black man living in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people. Hillary can never know that. Hillary ain't never been called a n*****."
In another sermon he took aim at former president Bill Clinton's supposedly good relationship with the black community.
"Hillary is married to Bill, and Bill has been good to us. No he ain't! Bill did us, just like he did Monica Lewinsky. He was riding dirty," the clergyman boomed.
By making a political endorsement from the pulpit, Mr Wright's outbursts may attract the attention of the Inland Revenue Service for contravening the church's tax-exempt charitable status.
The IRS has refused to comment on whether it is investigating the Chicago church, but has confirmed it is examining the denomination, which is based in New England, as a whole.
Although Mr Wright retired two weeks ago, his remarks will keep the issue of race at the forefront of the campaign just when Mr Obama, who is aiming to becoming the first black US president, hoped it would fade away.
Mr Wright conducted Mr Obama's marriage in 1992 and baptized his two children. The Illinois senator, who has often described him as a major influence, named his second bestselling memoir The Audacity of Hope after one of his sermons.
The Obama campaign responded with a statement by spokesman Bill Burton, who said: "Senator Obama has said repeatedly that personal attacks such as this have no place in this campaign or our politics, whether they're offered from a platform at a rally or the pulpit of a church."
Mr Obama has often likened Mr Wright to an "old uncle" with whom he doesn't always agree, but he may now need to distance himself further.
TV pundits and bloggers said that Mr Wright's oratory would scare many Americans. Some voters are also likely to be bothered by other clips shown yesterday, in which Rev Wright blamed 9/11 on US aggression overseas.
Furthermore, Trinity's Trumpet, a magazine published by Mr Wright's daughter, awarded a lifetime achievement award last year to Louis Farrakhan for his social work in Chicago's black neighbourhoods. The Nation of Islam leader has a history of anti-Semitism.
Dwight Hopkins, a professor of divinity at the University of Chicago and a member of Trinity's congregation, said: "Sometimes Wright says things and you think, 'Whoa, did he say that?' but he is a risk taker and says a lot of things that others only do behind closed doors.
"But remember - 90 per cent of what is said in the church is about Jesus."

The BarackStar!'s spiritual guide for 20 years . . . . this is better than the embarrassing nutty relatives of candidates (billy carter comes to mind); you can't choose your relatives, and everyone has a nutty uncle or two. but you choose your paster, and you choose your church.

The veneer is starting to come off the Senator and the moonbat underneath is starting to be shown. :-)

there was about an 8 point swing in the tracking polls over this. this is why, of course, you don't nominate a guy for president of the united states that is totally unknown and unvetted in a national election. the dems never learn; they did this with clinton. governor of a little southern state, and no one knew anything about him other than he gave this speech at the convention one year . . . . and look what they got.

in fact, if hillary can't beat The BarackStar! with this sort of stuff to hit him with, she can't beat anyone. and I am relatively sure that obama will get 527'ed to death with it in the general election if he gets the nomination.

It is the same reason they turned to Sen.Kerry 4 years ago.
They thought he was able to deflect the fact that they are soft on our nations defense and that they didn`t take the WOT seriously.
They never checked or they would have seen his tale was nothing but lies and misrepresentations.
It is the price to pay for being arrogant.

I think they had the right impulse in 2004, but the wrong execution. I think they said to themselves, "OMG, we are about to nominate a lunatic for president", and reflexively (and rather frantically) began to search for someone "electable". that's a bit of a twisted notion. ultimately, they nominated someone that really wasn't anyone's #1 candidate, but everyone thought would be liked by everyone else. what they got was an inoffensive corpse and his drunk wife.
kerry just made it worse when he nominated the sparkling and lively (although thoroughly brain dead) john edwards as his running mate.

Yeah, but Hillary was married to the first black president, so that should count for something.

I half expected to earth to rupture and spit sulfurous flames as gator emerged to level fierce rays of lightning-like indignation.

Even my liberal political history professor had a hard time admitting that in front of the entire class recently. She did it with this look of disgust, and I tried my hardest not to laugh.

What kills me about this, is that the guy is nearly as White as I am.
I'd love 5 minutes alone to talk to this person, and types like him, to explain how racist they truly are.
