Hunger

I heard this on NPR on the way home: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=12...

I hope everyone will listen to the story rather than read the transcript. It's very moving.

I wanted to post this here because things like this are always, always in the back of my mind when I am cooking and when we are all posting the elaborate things we are making. None of us obviously currently know real hunger, some of us never have.

If everyone in this country who is able gave to organizations that feed the homeless or adopted a family in need, I'm betting we could see true hunger disappear in America.

Here's to wishing and hoping it can and will be done.

1. I heard part of this earlier, and just saved the mp3...

in addition to some larger networks, we have a few local food banks and open kitchens around here.

I give some already, but I'll be giving more.

2. I've had periods of real hunger and it hurts worse than you can imagine, that gnawing at your midsection and the knowledge there isn't a grain of rice left in the jar and nothing else around and no way to get it for days. It's horrible. It's doling out just enough food to keep your stomach from hurting if you have it because you know how long it's going to be until you can afford to replenish your stocks.

So yeah, that's one of the top charities on my yearly list.

3. Warpy, I hope those days are far in your past

I'm so sorry that you've had to endure such scarcity. I hope all your remaining days are bounteous and prosperous ones.

I'm sorry anyone has to experience it.

Indeed! I found my local foodshelf and give to them. We live in such a rural area, and others may also, so a google search might be good!

Well I have. Newly divorced 30 years ago, I really DID live on toasted bread and water until that new job paid me.

It can be done. Unpleasant!

By the way, I'm writing a new story, "Mrs. Alfred Packer and Wild Bill do Easter."

It's taking me a while, though, because I can't figure out how to end it.

Coach that's good news. The continuing Packer Family Saga has been very entertaining. I suspect you'll find a suitable ending somewhere in a kitchen appliance.

I had to quit giving when my husband got laid off as a direct result of the coronation of your Messiah.  He's now employed, earning slightly more than half his former salary.  Now that the HRC tax increases are on the way, I don't see my charitable giving increasing any time in the near future.  Is that the change you've been hoping for?

Just about everyone has gone through hard times.  When we were newly married my husband was going to college and I was working (I made a whopping $7.50 an hour).  We ate spaghetti and butter (not real butter) all the time, sometimes I didn't have lunch because I needed to put gas in my car.  I had our son when my husband had about two years of college left so it got even worse when we had to start buying diapers and formula.  Guess what, we did it with out the help of the government.  I went back to work 3 weeks after having my son and my husband worked nights in a commissary being a night stocker even though the last year of college (in his field) is really hard to work and go to school full time.  He would get home from work, take a quick nap then go to class.    This was between 1987-1991 (our son was born march 1989).  You just have to do what you have to do, something that DU'er don't seem to be willing or according to them, able to do.

By the way, this was directed at DU'ers.  Not the people who are truly hungry through no fault of their own.  Those people deserve and should receive our help.

DUmmy Warpy's hunger (if it actually happpened - it's a common DUmp trick to get attention) most likely occurred as a rersult of her drug abuse, which led to the loss of her nursing career. At that point whatever money she could raise would have gone toward satisfying her addiction, not groceries.

Hummmm, I'm getting "page not found".

I doubt many in the US know real hunger. You can eat out of the trash cans behind many a restaurant at a level so far above countries with real hunger/starvation it's silly.
DUmmies, when I first moved to the area where I live now (1989) for a year I had to live on spaghetti sauce and white bread from the Grocery Outlet because I only had $25 dollars (after rent, etc.) for food to get through most months.
It really irked me to stand behind the "welfare mommas" who would have an entire grocery cart filled to the brim with junk food and know I WAS PAYING FOR IT and could not eat as "well" (relative) as they did.

No one goes hungry in this country.

You've of course, sir, heard about the latest from the gigantic primitive.

His new solution to losing weight: eating more.

I kid you not, sir.

It's not a hardship. I have ramen a couple of times a week. Best soup going.
It sure isn't the same as a real Kyushu ramen shop, but still awfully good in my opinion.

I used to eat a lot of wish sandwiches.  Bread and Mayo, and you wished there was something in the middle.

Just wait until they take the salt out of ramen.....  :p

Sorry but I have no sob story for you. I have been broke, deep in debt, out of work but never gone hungry except by choice.

Remember when Tangarine showed up here briefly?  Her big lib cause was childhood hunger.  She believed there shouldn't be any.  Fair enough, but we have so many programs in place, starting with school breakfasts, school lunches, summertime bridge programs, WIC, food stamps, etc. etc. etc. not to mention the food banks which will certainly give preference to families with children if necessary.  No wonder we have a bunch of little butterballs running around.
Yes, I do realize how callous that sounds.  Don't care.

It got bad once or twice when we were kids. I remember one summer we had some Tuna Helper or something without tuna. Just by itself, for 5 kids. Thank goodness dad brought home some bread and balogna and stuff that night.

If they're butterballs, they're usually not running around--they're sitting on their fourth points of contact playing video games.

That is usually solved by the two-parent system!

A jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread alternated with bologna when the PB would run out kept me going for a few months. A big bag of popcorn and jug of oil also carries you for several days if need be.

Anyone who can't make a legit $10 to eat something for a few days isn't concerned with survival.

Ramen Noodles
By the case during college! I attended college full time, worked two part time jobs totaling 60 hours per week. I still pulled a 3.3 average although I gave several 'A' grades away because I chose four hours of sleep over fours of study time. I graduated in 3.5 years - a semester early because I took summer classes. I was recruted by DynCorp (DynElectron) for a position as an Electronic Optics Engineer at the Kwajalein Missile Range now known as the (President) Reagan Test Site at Kwajalein Atoll. After six months, because of my extremely hard-core "work my ass off" work ethic, I
was promoted and moved to the ADP (Automated Data Processing) department. The most visable department on the atoll! Thus began my career in ernest in computing systems form IBM P.C.'s, mini-computers from Data General, CDC, Perkin-Elmer and two DEC 8800 and 9000 mainframes, a Cray single processor XMP and a Cray dual processor YMP.
