9 charged in bullied girl's death
Published: March. 29, 2010 at 4:57 PM
UPI
NORTHHAMPTON, Mass., March 29 (UPI) -- Nine youths were charged Monday in the death of a Massachusetts teenager said to have killed herself after being bullied mercilessly, authorities said.
Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel said the charges in the Jan. 14 death of Phoebe Prince of South Hadley ranged from statutory rape to civil rights violations to criminal harassment and disturbing a school assembly, The Boston Globe reported. The suspects included six teenagers ages 16-18 and three younger juveniles.
"Their conduct far exceeded the limits of normal teenage relationship-related quarrels,'' Scheibel said.

==================================================================
The six teenagers charged include Sean Mulveyhill, 17, South Hadley; Austin Renaud, 18, Springfield; Kayla Narey, 17, South Hadley; Ashley Longe, 16, South Hadley; Flannery Mullins, 16, South Hadley; and Sharon Chanon Velazquez, 16, South Hadley; and three juvenile girls from South Hadley.
These thugs are sick and they are facing serious charges. Their parents raised a spoiled entitlement obsessed brat. They tormented Phoebe Prince in part because she was a dating a football player and these girls got jealous. From there they tormented her.
Here is what these thugs looks like (http://www.myfoxboston.com/dpp/news/local/phoebe-prince-bullying-suicide-list-of-suspects-charges-25-apx-20100329).

That is absolutely horrific.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that they are releasing the names of the 17 year perps?

Very strange
-
They released the names of some of the 16 year olds too. Could it be related to the severity of the crime?

Or the color of those charged?

you need the names when you're trying to make an example out of someone... and need that example to further enhance your agenda. Just sayin.
-
Or the color of those charged?
It didn't even dawn on me.
-
It didn't even dawn on me.
Think about it. When juveniles are charged with some crime, about the only time their names and pictures are released is if they are white. Recently , here there was a big fight at one of the schools, and the news blocked names and pictures even though several were 18. Their names were available on several local message boards, along with descriptions.
-
It is still very sad that a child would chose sucide I feel awful for her family
-
Or the color of those charged?
All white kids.
-
Just wondering.....does it really matter what color they are? A young woman is dead, by her own hand, because she didn't think there was another option. I haven't figured out how I feel about this new bully legislation, and that is a topic for another day. But what I do know is that this poor child felt that she was tormented so, that she took her own life.
I guess bullying has no socio-economic boundaries? Well, hells bells, I could have told y'all that.
-
Could it be because they are being charged as adults and not juvenile....Remember the DC sniper, his name was also released and they charged him as an adult.
-
Didn't this girl have any friends that she confided in? Didn't anyone have a clue as to how bad it was for her?

Let's put it this way--when the story first broke, there were media at the HS. They interviewed a few students. The "mean kids" then beat the crap out of those interviewed, IN FULL VIEW OF ADULTS.
These kids kept it up even after the poor girl was DEAD.
http://www.boston.com/community/moms/articles/2010/01/24/the_untouchable_mean_girls/
They had a dance, a cotillion, at the Log Cabin in Holyoke two days after Phoebe’s sister found her in the closet, and some who were there say one of the Mean Girls bragged about how she played dumb with the detectives who questioned her.
Last week, one of the Springfield TV stations sent a crew to South Hadley High to talk to the kids.
One girl was interviewed on camera, and she said what was common knowledge: that bullies were stalking the corridors of South Hadley High.
As soon as the TV crew was out of sight, one of the Mean Girls came up and slammed the girl who had been interviewed against a locker and punched her in the head.
It's a case of they had gotten away with so much, for so long, they thought they were untouchable--and given the ***** attitude of the school administration, they were right.

Lee Boyd Malvo and he was 17 at the time. Also, Dylan Klebold was 17 when he and Eric Harris massacred 13 at Columbine High School.
School shooters have been named too, who were under the age of 16.
Mitchell Johnson 13 and Drew Golden 11
Kip Kinkel 15
Michael Carneal 15

Once you turn 16 in MA you are tried as an adult -- juvenile court is through age 15.
Educators could have stopped the torture
By Margery Eagan | Tuesday, March 30, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists
Now we know: The adults knew, and did nothing.
They were particularly trusted adults as well: teachers, school administrators and staff trained and paid to care for children in a safe environment.
They did nothing.
How could this be?
It was sickening to realize this during yesterday’s 15-minute press conference by Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth C. Scheibel: Educators at South Hadley High School could have stopped the torture of Phoebe Prince. They might even have saved her life. Yet they failed to act.

The school administrators and teaching staff who knew about it and did nothing should be tried also. How the hell they are still employed is beyond me. The school committe should fire their superintendent also.

Her mom and friends tried to help, however the school administration would do nothing. This story is really tragic from beginning to end.

The "not my kid" defense:
Suspect’s mother: ‘My daughter never fought with’ Phoebe Prince
By Laura Crimaldi | Tuesday, March 30, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Coverage
The mother of one student charged in the Phoebe Prince case said her daughter comes from a home of “strong values†and, while suspended after a verbal exchange with the bullied girl a month before Prince’s suicide, never physically harmed her.
“She exchanged a couple of words with her,†said Angeles Chanon, refusing to specify what her daughter said in the confrontations. “My daughter never fought with her or said, ‘Go harm yourself,’ or ‘I hate you.’ â€
Sharon Chanon Velazquez, 16, cried when she learned she had been indicted in the case yesterday, charged as a youthful offender with stalking and violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury.
“We have strong values, and I don’t like injustice, and injustice includes bullying or being racist,†the suspect’s mother said, adding that she grounded the teen in addition to the school suspension.
Chanon said her daughter informed her about the verbal dispute with Prince, 15.
“Phoebe was calling her names. They’re teenagers. They call names,†Chanon said. “She did not physically assault (her). I know she knows better than that. I wouldn’t accept that.â€
Chanon said the day Prince died, her daughter pointed her out as they passed her in the car while Prince walked home.

I am sure the parents of the 9/11 terrorists, Harrises/Klebolds, and Dahmers felt that way. They are in denial obviously.

My daughter told me on the way home from school yesterday that a boy in her school committed suicide over the weekend. She didn't know him and didn't know why he did it but she was very affected by it. I came in my room after dinner last night, she was sitting on my bed bawling. She said she didn't understand why she was so upset since she didn't even know him. She asked me how someone could be that hopeless at her age to do something like that. I gave her examples of why a kid could be so desperate but I also stressed that suicide is never the answer. She is such a good hearted kid, I don't think she could take being bullied like this girl was. I told her about the girl in this thread, I stressed that I wanted her to come to me if she was being bullied or so troubled that the thought of suicide ever crossed her mind. I can't imagine what her parents went through after their daughter killed herself. :(
-
For some reason, the prosecuter said the school would not be brought up on charges eventhough they had knowledge about the bullying...I don't understand that! The failed to protect this teen. I also heard she was the new girl...here from Ireland for only a semester.
Sad story....bullying in schools is probably getting worse because of PC.

Oh geez. Thanks to you and Sparky for the enlightenment. I only heard a 2 minute bit on the radio, and I thought that was bad enough. I would love to have a private meeting with those school officials. The fact that something like this can happen here, speaks volumes for the PC-apathetic crap we are dealing with everywhere. Prayers for Phoebe and her family.

Suicide of a kid is pretty serious. It never happened when I was in school, but there have been attempts though. Remember the Megan Meier case?

I have known of this case since it happened earlier this year. I have been following it.

I have unfortunately personally experienced suicide many times in my life. The youngest was 18, then 26, then 52. Each time it was a devastating loss. I can't fathom a young one like that.

My grandpa's Uncle and his cousin (the uncle's daughter) both committed suicide many years ago. To this day I don't know why.

Agreed. Why would a parent get involved is beyond me. Lori Drew is really hated like Osama bin Laden/September 11 Terrorists, Fred Phelps, and Adolf Hitler. People called Drew a terrorist and likened her to the 19 hijackers. She resembles Fred Phelps in her appearance and deviancy.

I only know why for the 26 year old. Bad, bad story, involving mental illness, Iraq, and lots and lots of seroquel. The others, I know why, only from their notes.

That area has an "Old Boys" mindset. It is not too far from UMass-Amherst, some really leftist college.

Absolutely. But I think we ought to take a look at how children are being raised, and disciplined. This bullying behavior should not be encouraged, or dismissed.

There was another one south of Ft. Worth this weekend. 13 year old kid hung himself.
Dallas News (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/033110dnmetjoshuateen.200bbc38e.html)
The apparent suicide of an eighth-grader in Johnson County is being linked to bullying.
Joshua
Jon Carmichael, a 13-year-old student in the town of Joshua, was found hanging in his family's barn Sunday, said Linda Anderson, public information officer for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner, which is handling the case.
The cause of death has not been determined yet, she said. The office is waiting to receive medical and investigative records before releasing a cause, Anderson said.

Agreed. Some evil figures in history were bullies.
Adolf Hitler
Joseph Stalin
Saddam Hussein
Nero
Caligula
Osama bin Laden
George Hennard
Eric Harris/Dylan Klebold
In regards to Meier, it was a mother who did it because she was envious and paranoid.

Yeah Mike, I posted to that earlier. And Ptarmy.... I haven't researched all of the people on your list, so I am stepping out on the limb of speculation here, but it seems to me that some were bullied, and then grew up to be bullies. I was bullied big time as a child, in fact I was duct taped to a freaking tree in front of high school. I know bullies. What I am trying to say is that regardless of what has happened in the past, what is happening now, today, in the schools of here and now, there seems to be much more violent bullying going on. Now, it may very well be that we are just hearing more of it, thanks to the wonders of the innernets, but I do wonder, if it might have to do with the lack of engagement that occurs in a lot of family situations....not everyone, but the rest of everyone.
I would love for some parents to chime in here, to share. I don't have any my own, so I am just speculating.
Again, I am referencing children as bullies, whose actions cause other children to cause harm to themselves, up to, and including suicide. I already know that grown-ups can be hateful.
-
After this my 13 year old's school has started what they call a No Bully Zone if any child is caught being a bully or turned in for being a bully no question's asked the child is expelled.
-
I had the unfortunate experience of being bullied in the 5th and 6th grade...as I was the new kid. No physical harm, just name-calling. I eventually got tired of it, so I told a teacher. Well, the "bully" got bullied by the teacher...she even grabbed him by his shirt and nearly slammed him into the corridor (this was a catholic school, and roughhousing was allowed). It stopped after that, and he always went out of his way to be nice to me. Unfortunately, teachers can't do that nowadays.
-

On that topic, yes, they were all bullied to some degree, in the form of being beaten by their parents all the time. When you think about it, bullies were bullied themselves. Hitler was bullied by his father in the form of constant beatings. As for Harris and Klebold being bullied that was proven to be false.

I think we are hearing more about it simply due to more awareness. Another thing is the break down of families. Many bullies do come from dysfunctional families. Not all. Some come from stable two parent families.
That has to suck that you got duct taped to the tree. I heard something like that happened when I was in high school during homecoming were students wrap the school with toilet paper, which is a tradition.

One of my daughters was bullied pretty badly.
In the first instance, when I brought a complaint to the board I was asked if I wanted to press charges. I told the board and the thug's parents that no, at his age he would only get a slap on the wrist. I wanted him to think he got away with something, then become an adult and pull the same crap. Then his parents would lose part of their ranch having to pay for his defense. It happened his second year of college and they did have to sell a nice portion with water on it to rescue "precious pup."
The second time, same district, daughter was getting no help from teachers and the bullying was happening in class. I advised her to smash a computer monitor or tower on the floor and then call me. She did it once. I told them that would happen everytime she was allowed to be bullied. It stopped.
-
Not to take anything away from this topic or death, but, who hasn't been bullied at one point or another. Seriously even the biggest bully in school has most likely been bullied by someone else at some time. I sometimes think that the media or parents like to blame bullying when there could be much bigger factors behind it. Everyone wants to have a reason to say "Look that is exactly why they killed themself!" That isn't always the case.
I knew a boy once, he was so incredibly funny and cute. I was a new mom and he was playing with my baby girl. I just loved that guy, everyone loved him. One night he went and laid down on railroad tracks and was killed by a train. Everyone who knew him couldn't believe that this wonderful guy would do something like that. I don't think anyone ever knew why he did it either. Suicide sucks and it is a selfish act.
-

I wasn't the only one that day, I was a sophomore, just starting HS. Several of my buddies did as well. The seniors did it as some juvenile prank. The principal suspended the ones who did it, and called their parents, and then pulled all of us tape victims into his office, I think there were 8 or so. He told us whatever we measly sophs were about that the seniors were so afraid of us, that they taped us to the trees must be pretty darn good. And that he expected great things of us. The way he said it, it was like an honor, and all of that embarassment washed right away. Smart man. We bought it, hook line and sinker.

I think that bullying has risen to a whole new level with the addition of texting and social networks online. It is more akin to stalking -- perpetual torment you just cannot escape from.
I just can't imagine how hard it had to be for the new girl to handle.

I talked to a mom last night from another school district. Her son is 16 and a star football and basketball player. A group of boys kept threatening him. He went to the principle and they told him they couldn't do anything until something actually happened or they had proof. He got jumped in the hallway at school yesterday and had his head slammed into a locker and punched. He got suspended. WTF!?!? He tried to do the right thing and got punished anyway. These same boys showed up at his house too trying to find him and beat him some more. I would have met the little ****tards with a shotgun.

That is obviously the case in most cases.

A kid tried to stab my daughter with scissors in 1st grade. He got her in the face but didn't do any damage. When I had to talk to the principle there was nothing they could do because the kids although a genius was special needs due to his mental problems. I have always told my kids to never start a fight but always finish it. And if they see a little kid getting picked on or beat up they are to stand up for them. They won't be getting into any trouble with me as long as they follow those rules. I won't tolerate them being bullies though.

alot of districts now require zero tolerance policies: everyone involved in a fight gets suspended, including the victim
all that does is disincentivize reporting of attacks

The way I figure it if you are going to get suspended anyway you may as well go full tilt insane on someone. Zero tolerance is always the worst policy.

1) He/she never should have told you the child was special needs;
2) that is not true. Special needs or not, if physical violence is involved they can be suspended for up to 10 days, and removed from the general education classroom if it is determined that the child is a threat to themselves or others.

Sons best friend got suspended from high school yesterday. Son called him last night to find out what happened....he ain't allowed to discuss the incident with anyone.
Son tells me that his friend has been getting harassed by a group of Obama supporters all year. His friend had reported it many times with no results. Yesterday it came to a head......redneck, honky, white trash used multiple times over an extended period of time are all acceptable words if spoken by a Obama supporter but if the "N" word is used even once at the end of some extended harassment, it's all your fault and you're outta there for an undetermined amount of time..
BTW Just heard this morning that there was some shooting in the school parking lot yesterday after school...don't know any more than that right now....but apparently it was one of those sideways shooters that can't hit jack shit but he looks cool shooting that way.
-
Why don't schools own up and get rid of the little troublemakers why wait till there is proof :banghead:
They actually did go through the expulsion process and two students ended up being expelled. In this process the student and parents appears (with counsel if they choose) in front of the school committee/board in executive session, and a hearing is actually held that is similar to a quasi-trial. There is a court reporter, the district has their counsel present who runs the meeting, witnesses and evidence are presented, the superintendent usually makes commentary, and then the school committee deliberates on whether or not to expel. As this involved cyber bullying the school committee has to make the decision on kicking the students out of district. There was rather strong language written into a MA bill which would give school administrators more power to act against bullying and forced teachers to be accountable for ignoring bullying, however as it made its way through the extremely liberal house and senate it got so watered down it is now meaningless.
School Administrators have to show that bullying which occurs outside of school grounds is a manifestation of school activities for them and the school board/committee to be able to act. This is why cyber bullying is such a gray area.
If the district attorney has evidence that school district administration did indeed know about the torment, then the lawsuit will be $$ staggering. This is why we are hearing over and over from administration that they knew nothing. The liability they face is tremendous. The district attorney will bury them however, and Phoebe's family will recover a huge settlement. Money is one of the few things that school boards and administration pay attention to. Perhaps that will get them to change the way they do things.

If your child is being bullied, I urge parents to send the Gebser letter (Gebser is a famous SCOTUS case in which the Court determined that school administration, or staff who has power to stop harrassment, must have been made aware it is happening in order for the school district to be liable) to the school principal and superintendent:
Gebser letter is sent to place the District on notice of the discrimination, so that if further action is required the District cannot claim they were unaware the discrimination/harrassment was occuring, and thus cannot be held accountable:
Bullying and Harassment - Gebser Letter
1. In writing, address the notification to a specific person and date the letter.
2. Write the letter to a person who has the authority to investigate and the authority to correct the wrong.
3. Note that the school district is a recipient of federal financial assistance.
4. State the past or continuing discriminatory activity against your child (bullying, harrassment, stalking, etc.).
5. State that the school district has control over both the site of the discrimination and over any school personnel involved.
6. Explain that the discrimination was not a single acct but was severe and pervasive.
7. Tell how the discrimination excluded your child from continued participation in school or denied your child the benefits to which other students in school have access.
8. Explain, as well as you can, what you would like the school to do to stop the discrimination or to remediate the harm the discrimination has done to your child.
9. State that if the person receiving this letter does not investigate or does not take effective corrective action, that you may claim that the district showed deliberate indifference to the discrimination. You may also want to add a date you expect to hear back from the district in regards to your letter.
These steps are adapted from attorney Reed Martin's "10 steps to making a successful complaint". This information is educational and not intended to be legal advice.

Good advice!
The Prince family got a lawyer.

The school administrators are really making themselves look worse. It is like a dam that is broken and they put bombs to destroy the dam and flood the city.

My son only got in one fight in school and that was in 8th grade. 15 yrs ago. He stuck up for a physically handicapped girl against a bully. T got tired of this kid making fun of his friend. Called him out to a fight in the boy's restroom. T threw the first and his only punch, and got the crap beat out of him. Both boys were suspended, out of school, for 3 days. The principal apologized to me, and told me because of zero tolerance that he had no choice, that fighting was a mandatory suspension. Also told me the other's boy's parents had the right to press charges against my son for assault. He also told me that he told them that he strongly recommended against it, as it would come out about their son's behavior toward the little girl. Nothing ever came of it, except T never got in another fight.... at school....
He still takes up for the "underdog"....and detests bullying.

Sharon Chanon Velazquez claims she is a victim. :whatever: BOO-HOO!!!!!! :bird:

"She has been subject to significant public disdain and reprimand. She and her family are being subjected to extensive internet intimidation," said Keefe.
WONDERFUL, public humiliation and scorn works better then a fine or probation.
I simply do not understand why in the work place or school setting if some person walks up and cold cocks you, you the victim are also suspended for fighting.? Can we be fired for protecting ourselves from harm, suspended from school for attempting to distance ourselves from bodily harm.? Attack Rabbit-----Run away, Run away.
Does that mean that if a woman is raped and fights back, she also gets the same punishment as the rapist.? If she does not fight back does that mean she wanted it.?
I see a strange movement all over the world today to enact rules and laws that put the victim at a disadvantage. Bully's in all walks of life have the advantage of knowing they can not only bully people but cause them to suffer more then they do. So one looses a job, big deal their victim also has not only been assaulted but their lives changed to boot.
In school a bully can beat up a student and get suspended for 3 days----their victim is also suspended AND a record is kept about the victim being involved in a fight. Looks real bad on a college application for the victim, the bully has the last laugh as they get a scholarship for being from a poor family.
ARGGGGGGGG :banghead:

SHE'S been subject to harassment? Poor baby. She's only getting a very small taste of what her daughter and others put Phoebe through.

Tell me about it! I remember that happening to Lori Drew, the rotten scumbag who harassed Megan Meier to suicide. Whatever befalls them, no sympathy for them or to anyone who defends these scumbags. I consider them just as bad. I loathe Phoebe's bullies and Lori Drew as much as I loathe Osama bin Laden, Kim Jong-Il, Jeffrey Dahmer, Diane Downs, and any evil figure in history. They deserve each other.

Disturbing all I can say. Two separate groups connected to Sean Mulveyhill and Austin Renaud were involved.
Sean Mulveyhill
Kayla Narey
Ashley Longe
Austin Renaud
Flannery Mullins
Sharon Velazquez
Others involved in both cases.

Phoebe Prince bullies live in fear amid death threats

No sympathy for these scumbags. They made their bed and must sleep on it. They deserve to be in the same category with Seung-Hui Cho, Osama bin Laden, Adolf Hitler, or Joseph Stalin. These bullies are just as worthless as they were and they killed many. :bird: I am not in any way trying to trivialize 9/11, Holocaust, or Purge.

Phoebe pleaded for help at school
The new court documents also lay out, in painful detail, the final day of her life.
Prince was in the library with friends at the same time as Narey, Mulveyhill, and one of their friends, Ashley Longe, who has also been charged in the case.
Longe began yelling, “I hate stupid sluts,’’ and other, cruder sexual slurs at Prince. She later called her an “Irish whore’’ and wrote similar descriptions on the library sign-in sheets.... See More
At the end of the school day, Longe again yelled degrading sexual comments at Prince in the school auditorium. Mulveyhill, who was charged with statutory rape, encouraged Longe’s behavior and also called Prince a whore. Narey, sitting nearby, was laughing, prosecutors said.
Minutes later, Longe threw an empty drink can from a car at Prince, who was walking home. Longe laughed and called her a whore. Prince, according to the witness, was crying.

Pol: School bigs acted properly
No longer seeking review in bully case
By Hillary Chabot, Jessica Van Sack and Marie Szaniszlo | Friday, April 9, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Coverage

South Hadley state Rep. John Scibak yesterday backed off his demand for an independent review of the relentless bullying surrounding Phoebe Prince’s suicide, saying he’s now satisfied school officials acted properly and should not face criminal charges.
“I had several conversations with the district attorney and the School Department, I don’t think an independent review is warranted at this time,†Scibak told the Herald.
He said the probe he requested Wednesday was meant to provide an objective perspective that would deflate tensions surrounding the highly charged case - not target school officials.
“I didn’t want to start a witch hunt,†Scibak said.
Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth D. Scheibel has indicated that school staffers may have left Prince - a vulnerable freshman and a recent Irish immigrant - to fend for herself, saying, “The actions or inactions of some adults are troublesome.â€

The school administrators should be fired and thrown in prison along side with the bullies and their parents. I am sure Al-Qaeda would recruit these thugs. Bin Laden would be proud of them.

Should we be criminalizing bullies?
Washington Post
By Ruth Marcus
Wednesday, April 7, 2010
My heart aches for the parents of Phoebe Prince, the 15-year-old Massachusetts high school student who committed suicide in January after being relentlessly bullied at school and online.
My heart aches for her younger sister, who found Phoebe hanging in the stairwell of the family's home. A scarf the sister had bought her as a Christmas gift was knotted around Phoebe's neck.
My heart aches for Phoebe, who arrived from Ireland last fall only to endure months of abuse from classmates at South Hadley High School, the apparent result of Phoebe's brief fling with a popular football player.
My heart aches, but I also question the wisdom of filing criminal charges against nine of Phoebe's former classmates, as happened last week. Bullying should be taken seriously -- by teachers, administrators, parents and, yes, fellow students. I'm doubtful, though, that criminal prosecution is the best way to punish or prevent it.

Hello? They broke the law, stalking, assault, and statutory rape is illegal. Let's repeal all laws while we're at it.
Still, to be a teenager is to do stupid things.
I was a teenager once and I did stupid things, but not harass a person to death. By your rationale, Eric and Dylan were acting stupid when they killed 13 people at Columbine High School. Her writing is a joke from a leftist rag.

Show some mercy
Daily Collegian
April 1, 2010
Rachel Dougherty
Following three months of harassment by fellow students at South Hadley High School, student Phoebe Prince committed suicide. Prince’s reported “bullycide†has brought national scrutiny on the quiet suburban town of South Hadley and provoked a lawsuit against the students involved in the bullying. The prosecution announced on Monday that nine South Hadley students were being indicted on felony charges in the case of Prince’s death.
The charges against the students are part of an anti-bullying movement in the state that began following the suicide of Springfield student Carl Walker last year.
