One week before the most solemn day in the Christian year, the city of Davenport, Iowa removed Good Friday from its municipal calendar, setting off a storm of complaints from Christians and union members whose contracts give them that day off.
Taking a recommendation by the Davenport Civil Rights Commission to change the holiday's name to something more ecumenical, City Administrator Craig Malin sent a memo to municipal employees announcing Good Friday would officially be known as "Spring Holiday."
"My phone has been ringing off the hook since Saturday," said city council alderman Bill Edmond. "People are genuinely upset because this is nothing but political correctness run amok."
Edmond said the city administrator made the change unilaterally and did not bring it to the council for a vote, a requirement for a change in policy.

Davenport--think, "Berkeley in a cornfield," and you'd be pretty close. Then again, Grinell is worse--I went to HS with a couple of smart girls, but total libs. They ended up going to Grinell together. One now lives in DC as a lobbyist and blogger on HuffPo.

I demand that we rename ramadhan too.
It can be the 'fall holiday festivus'.
That makes as much sense.
-
And the soft-core ethnic cleansing continues apace.

UPDATE:
Just heard on the top of the hour news that they changed it back.......apparently the torches and pitchforks converged on City Hall this morning at dawn.......

Good report, Doc
I'm not a Christian and I have less than zero interest in Easter or X-Mas but I cannot stand the gutless wonders who demand every vestige of our founding and predominant culture be sacrificed on the altar of accomodating a bunch of intolerant bigots in the name of tolerance.

Exactly who is it that is being accomodated? Does anyone really know?
Growing up in Iowa with a bunch of Protestants, Catholics and Jews....I don't remember anyone griping about the Christian holidays or the Jewish holidays.
The only comments I remember on the playground were that how come the Jewish kids got out of school for our holidays, but we didn't get out of school for theirs. And how come they got gifts from Santa and for 7 days of Hanakuh!
Good Friday was a holiday. Banks, post office, schools were closed, and many business closed at noon, or from noon to 3pm. Easter Monday was a holiday too.
Are there really that many people complaining in Davenport Ia about Good Friday, or is it just some place the ACLU or someone else with a wild hair decided to pick to start an uproar?

I think it was done by the city administrator on their own without any complaints filed.

Actually there was a complaint filed by the local "Human Rights Committee".......I have no idea if they are a government body or not, however the decision was "To recognize the diversity in the community".....for what ever that is worth.
There was such a clamor over it, thet the decision was reversed, and apparently the "Committee" was advised to basically "sit down and shut up"....case closed, at least for the moment.

IA is hugely liberal. Quite surprising, actually.

Has been since I was a kid....right after they invented fire.... :uhsure:
Maybe because there are a lot of first and second generation Americans of Scandinavian descent. My step-grandmother was from Denmark and came over in her early 20's straight to western Iowa which had a large Danish population. She was advocating national health care like Denmark had, when I was in high school back in the late 60's.

Well well well. Guess who complained about the changing of the name of Good Friday........ A union in Iowa was. They complained that they got Good Friday off and would not get it off if the name was changed since their contract specifically said Good Friday. :banghead:

Yer a youngin'...
A lot of people in IA live on subsidies - the corn farmers being key to that story. Add to that the wind farms - that are RARELY working when I drive by them (~2x month), and it's a kept state.
I have a few friends down there who are very quiet about their conservative views... It's creepy to see them step softly.

Our company sends out e-mails every week or so telling which branches are shut down for each day. I think almost every one of our international branches is shut down for Good Friday and/or the Monday after Easter, but not a single US office is closed. Our office in India has Good Friday off :banghead:
My boss is really good about letting us take religious holidays off, and we actually have a few extra "personal" days for that sort of thing, so I'm taking Good Friday off anyways.
-
We have to work on Good Friday, but the non-union office workers have the day off.

Well Since I live here in Iowa I can tell you that side of the state is why Tom Harkins still in any office after we ran his ass out of here when he was a Congressman back in the day.

I'm in Des Moines about once every 6 weeks... Interesting place. :)

I propose we rename all holidays "Lazy Ass Government Workers Free Day With Pay Day".
...and for those of us who have for many years worked all those holidays, we'll call it, "Work So They Don't Send You To The Camps Day".
-

Same here. They gave it up for MLK day, I believe.

It was negotiated in our contract. We gave up the Holiday for another personal day.

You get Good Friday off? Lucky bastards!

Not any more. We used to, but the company wanted us to work, so we work on Good Friday, but we got an extra personal day for it. It's the non-union office workers that still get the day off.
