Title: Senate passes reconciliation bill, 56-43
Post by: Chris on March 25, 2010, 01:20:10 PM
The U.S. Senate has passed the reconciliation bill.

The bill, which now goes back to the House for a final vote, fixes some parts of the larger health care bill that was signed into law on Tuesday.

The final vote was 56 to 43. Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska joined with Republicans in voting against the bill

Now the "fix" (is that what this is?) goes back to the House.

I heard on the radio that they had to strip out the takeover of the student loan program, as it didn't meet the qualifications for reconciliation.......that increases the cost of this beast to well over one trillion......I wonder if anyone will notice?

Yeah, the House has to hash out the differences.  I forget where it goes from there... probably to Barry Big Ears for his autograph.

Thats actually important

There is a psychology in pricing - somehow $19.99 is far far cheaper than twenty bucks. and 900+ billion is a discount compared to a trillion. Getting the cost up front to over a trillion will further weaken already tepid support form those people willing to give Obama a chance on HCR.

The $500 million in MediCare cuts promised were a budget gimmick. They ain't going to happen. The real price could be triple what is promised.

Who was the other (D) who voted against it, besides Nelson?

There's only 41, not 42, (R) Senators.

Not to mention 56+43 use to equal 99, not 100, so who didn't vote?

Congress agreed Thursday to amend the nation's new health-care law, concluding its long and contentious quest to pass major reforms, and prepared to head home for a two-week recess and to hear from skeptical voters about the legislation.

The last legislative hurdle to clear before recess was a reconciliation bill that contained a number of "fixes" to the health-care law, as well as an overhaul of the student loan program and expansion of Pell Grants. The measure was designed to proceed through Congress along a fast track, but it bogged down nevertheless.

In the end, the reconciliation bill passed the Senate 56 to 43, and the House approved it again, this time on a 220 to 207 vote. It goes to President Obama for his signature.

If you want a ridiculous sob story, go read the article.  You'd think a liberal ever said a nasty word about a Republican.  What a bunch of fools.

Republicans continued to denounce the health plan. “Job creators are assessing how much damage has been done to them” by new taxes in the legislation, said California Republican David Dreier. ‘This could not be a worse time to impose job killing tax increases.”

In the House, 32 Democrats joined with Republicans in voting against the changes measure.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, said the health plan will create an “income shift” and a “leveling toward lower-income Americans.” Americans’ income distribution has been thrown off in recent years, he said. “The wealthy are getting way too wealthy.” 50 Senators record minimum net worths of at least $1 million or more.

The reconciliation bill also scales back a tax on high-end insurance plans. Labor unions said the levy would affect too many workers; the reconciliation bill reduces the revenue from the tax by 80 percent by raising the thresholds at which it would apply. The measure also delays the tax until 2018.

In revamping the college student-loan program, all students borrow directly from the federal government.
