Title: I Just Saw "I Am Legend"
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on March 14, 2008, 03:02:09 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong but that movie isn't about post-Apocalyptic zombie hunting as it is a call to faith in the still, small voice of God.

For those with the attention span of a gnat (the ones who grew up on MTV), it is about killing zombies and hunting deer in NYC.  For those of us with the mental capacity to see a bigger meaning it is a call to faith.

And in both accounts, it was a good flick  :cheersmate:
The first 2/3 were good, it kinda trailed off at the end.  Kinda like they ran out of time and had to end it.  Shoulda been about a 2 1/2 hour movie.  Looking forward to the director's cut, though.

I like 28 Weeks Later better.

There are moments when I expose the Barbie within - this is one of them.  Can someone explain to this brain-like-a-gnat how this movie is a call to faith?  You may flame as you wish, but please school me.  Thanks.

SPOILER ALERT:

In a flashback scene Smith's son (his son IRL, BTW) is making butterfly shapes with his hands.

Before Smith's family flies off in the chopper they say a very overt non-non-descript prayer.

When Smith meets the woman survivor she will not be shaken from her faith in a survivor's colony, claiming quite confidently that God told her so and reciting a list of coincidences she believes are indicative of the hand of Providence.

In the final scene the head zombie is smashing himself against the glass wall the glass fractures into a butterfly pattern. This cues Smith to think of his son's last night, then he remembers the butterfly tattoo on the woman survivor's neck.

Smith takes this to mean he is supposed to get the serum to the woman survivor--a pure act of faith on his part...and it seems he was correct.

Not to mention ( I can't remeber verbatem) when the Smith tells the woman that God isn't here, she says he's always here, we're just not listening.  Then, at the end when the head infected is busting through and Smith decides to sacrifice himself, the woman asks what he's doing.  His reply, " I'm listening."

Or, failing that, you can save $9 and just rent a copy of Omega Man with Charlton Heston.

People spend too much time looking for hidden meanings in movies. Sometimes movies are a good mental exercise and sometimes it is about killing zombies. This movie was a bit of both. But that still doesnt mean you should all day psychoanalyzing it. I didnt really see it as a "call to faith". But then I am not a christian and people often project what they want to see on movies. I will say this is the first ever zombie movie that I liked. I have watched it several times already and will do so again I am sure.

I don't think it's an altar call, but the imagery is central to the plot resolution.

I didn't see the movie, but I did read the book over the weekend.  I don't see it.

The movie was probably a lot different.

I haven't read the book but I remember lenty of people at the time of release noting there was little resemblance.

Ditto, I, Robot.

Spoiler, but Robert Nevillie dies at the end of the book.  The dog dies a week after Robert gets it into his house.

Beyond that, I could't discern any sort of meaning from the story other than being a Dracula-ish horror story.

I can take the bending of the plot and the mis-use of the zeroth law (as coined by R. Daneel).  But to paint Susan Calvin as a hot chick was WRONG WRONG WRONG.  She essentially hated men and didn't care for women. She preferred robots to people (as do I). That is what made her what she was, the premier Robopsychologist anywhere.  The Good Doctor must have been rolling in his grave for the misuse and mis-portrayal of his most famous character.
