A 16-year-old boy arrested in the case of a racial comment made over the public-address system at a Walmart store in southern New Jersey.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. - A 16-year-old boy who police said made an announcement at Walmart ordering all black people in a southern New Jersey store to leave was charged with harassment and bias intimidation, authorities said Saturday.
The boy, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, grabbed one of the courtesy phones at Walmart's Washington Township store Sunday evening and calmly announced: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now," police said.
The teen was arrested Friday and released to the custody of his parents; police did not know whether he had a lawyer.
"This was an extremely disturbing event on many levels," Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said at a news conference. "Any statements like these that can cause harm or grave concern must be addressed as quickly we possibly can."
Dalton said the case would be handled in juvenile court in neighboring Atlantic County, where the boy lives. He would not say whether the boy has a criminal record, citing the teen's age, and would not disclose the teen's race, saying that did not factor into the investigation.

Oh goody. Now just beat his ass and move on. No need to get Al Sharpton involved.

The 16-year-old has been charged with harassment and bias intimidation.
That seems a little overboard. It seems like a stupid teenage stunt to me.

He would not say whether the boy has a criminal record, citing the teen's age, and would not disclose the teen's race, saying that did not factor into the investigation.
:uhsure:
-
Yeah, I read that part too. I wonder what would happen to the "outrage" then.
-
This just continues to prove that Walmart is racist and of the debull![/DUmp mode]
-
He did what was stupid, but I don't think he should go to prison. If Wal-Mart wants to ban him, fine with me. If he was my son, I would go down to Bentonville and make him apologize to Wal-Mart.
-
I wonder if this kid isn't a product of liberal indoctrination in the schools. Led to hate Wallmart, and despise his own race this is just what the other liberals are doing...fake hate crimes.

When was the last legitimate hate crime of this type? Most of the nooses and racist graffiti have been found out to be blacks doing it to bring attention to perceived racism.

I wondered if the kid involved was Black.

If he was white, his name, address and school would have been leaked already.
-
200 hours community service in public services and an additional 200 hours community service as Wal-Mart sees fit. Parents are civilly liable for business losses suffered by Wal-Mart.
So ordered.
-
If he was white, his name, address and school would have been leaked already.
Good point.
-
Now the charges against the boy aren't what's important. What is important is how much Walmart needs to pay for the pain and suffering! It may have reminded people of Selma.

Wally World is being johnny-on-the-spot with all this because the BIGGEST question coming out of all this is:
"Just how the hell did a 16-year-old kid get access to a phone that is capable of a public address across the entire store?"
To say security is lacking is obvious.
Believe me, the lawyers are frantically looking for ways to express public outrage at something like this and to release the interim "facts" as to who said what when.
