No wonder I didn't sleep last night!
I went grocery shopping yesterday and picked up a few things I don't usually buy. Most are to serve when my daughter arrives this weekend. I also bought for myself, a Cook's ham slice.
I have not bought a ham slice for years but figured that divided, it would be 3 meals worth of meat.
I browned up a small section for dinner. Sliced the remaining into 2 portions. Fine.
I went to bed at about 9:30 and read for a while. Lights out an hour or so later. I kept waking up every 15-20 minutes dying of thirst. I do keep a glass of water on the bedside table but had to get up and fill it 4 times.
Awful. I could not figure out what the heck this new affliction was.
Just found out.
I just went through the trash for the label on the ham. Nutrition facts: 1230 mg's of sodium.
No wonder I was so thirsty.
Do you think it would be OK to soak the other 2 portions to try and leech out the salt? I'd rather not have to throw it away but I'll never buy one of these again.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE BITTER OLD VERMONTESE CALI PRIMITIVE
Response to Original message
1. I would think an overnight with a couple changes of water to cover would remove a lot of the salt, but may pull some of the other "flavor" as well. I use about a half of one of those to flavor (and salt) a whole big pot of soup sometimes.
I'm surprised there's been only one primitive at this campfire thus far; I'll keep my eye on it, to see if the defrocked warped primitive or the farmerette from Wisconsin or the hip-impaired vindictive primitive, a notorious re-seller, or Mrs. Alfred Packer, weighs in on the subject.

1230 mg? That's less than half the RDA. And four glasses of water?
Sounds like a fatass is borderline if not undiagnosed diabetic.

That was my first thought also....now if she's getting up to pee several times a night that would.... sinc....sen.....awh hell....make it certain.

I've always wanted to tell this, but never found a suitable venue, until now.
You know of course I'm deaf.
Which means alarm clocks to wake me up in the morning are useless.
However, I was born with kidneys and a bladder that work excellently; remarkably well.
I dunno how old I was when I discovered this--I do recall it was sometime when I was still in grade school, though--that certain sorts of liquids taken in certain specific quantities before hitting the sack were just as good as an alarm clock.
It depends upon what it is; water would wake one up after exactly six hours, orange juice after about four hours. Milk is great for those times one awakes at 4:00 a.m. but wants to sleep until, say, 5:30 a.m.
And the quantity's important too.
It's a great alarm clock.

A person just discovered that ham from a store is somewhat salty and will make one thirsty?
Good God do these creatures live in void their entire life?

Salt? In a cured ham? Who would ever suspect that?

This is yet another "in the news" story that they want to claim as their own. Some stupid New York City democrat wants to ban salt from restaurants.

My dad always seemed to get up at the same time every morning clock or no.

As long as I live I will never "get" why they feel compelled to have make themselves part of the story endlessly.
For some bizarre reason they can`t comment on anything without making up a tale to personalize it and I just can`t grasp what lunacy that satisfies.

Why throw away the unused portion of the ham slice?
Since the holidays are over, the primitive will have a much harder time ridding itself of the transgressing ham slice. That's right- it won't be nearly as easy as it would have been a couple months back, when the primitive could collect on some good thoughts and warm fuzzies by cramming the remnants into the Salvation Army kettle.
The primitive will probably have to wait it out, and hope some homeless person comes to dirty its doorstep before it can depose the offending ham from its abode.
Or maybe just save bobbolink the gas, and mail it to her instead.
