Title: Looking for a little help here...
Post by: asdf2231 on January 09, 2008, 12:32:15 PM
I have the opportunity to take a month long sabatical in either April or May.

I have been tearing up google trying to locate a small remote cabin somewhere in the pacific nw or montana/idaho that has at least water and an outhouse or pit toilet.

What I am finding are 500$ a night cabins with wifi and hot tubs. :p
Or places that are in clusters of vacation cabins.

I am trying to find a remote or semi primative cabin that offers seclusion and the above minimum standards and is avilable for a full months rental.

Oregon and Washington have some fantastic cabins and even old fire watch towers, but they limit rentals to anything from 4 days to 2 weeks. And they are accessable by Hiking trail and lack water sources.

I am looking more for Henry David Thoreau rather than Clan Of The Cave Bear.

Can anyone offer ideas or contacts?

Thank's for any input.

You can find cabins like that in the Smoky Mountains...GA, TN, and NC.

what about the san juans? i think thats about as rugged as you could get around here. they often lose electricity during the winter and you're separated from civilization by the ferries..

Friday Harbor is our favorite place to go out there and there are a lot of small houses and cabins on the islands.. Orcas Island is less populated but I dont know how rugged you want to go..

It would be really chilly but its gorgeous and the nature stuff would be off the charts such as whale watching, sunsets.. watching the big storms come up, etc..

How much do you want to spend?

KOA has campgrounds that include cabins in the middle of nowhere.

1,000 to 1,700$

I am trying to find something that isn't around ANYTHING.  There are a lot of places that rent cabins but they are in clusters or guest houses on ranches grouped with other stuff.

The North Georgia mountains...Check out Dahlonega or another town in Lumpkin Country...great cabins and awesome views of the mountains.
Tennessee is also a good choice.
