Title: John Daly's PGA Tour personnel file made public through courts
Post by: Ralph Wiggum on March 02, 2010, 02:45:38 PM
John Daly's confidential personnel file at the PGA Tour became a matter of public record recently and uncovered a startling number of attempts by Tour officials to help the still wildly popular golfer with his issues on and off the course.

The 456-page file, obtained by The Florida Times-Union, covers the years 1991 through late 2008 and revealed the following:

• That the PGA Tour, on seven occasions, ordered Daly to undergo counseling or enter alcohol rehabilitation;

• That Daly was placed on Tour probation six times;

• That Daly was cited 11 times for "conduct unbecoming a professional";

• That Daly was flagged 21 times for "failure to give best efforts";

• That Daly accrued fines of nearly $100,000 during the period covered in the file.

The final transgression listed in his file, according to the Times-Union, details Daly's six-month suspension from the PGA Tour at the start of the 2009 golf season after his October 2008 arrest, in which he was found intoxicated outside a Hooters restaurant in North Carolina.

Daly's personnel file also included accusations that he nearly struck an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent after failing to stop his car at a security checkpoint at the 2005 U.S. Open in Pinehurst, N.C.

One of the reasons that Daly is so wildly popular is his irreverence for authority.

He flips the bird at EVERYBODY in authority and it doesn't bother him a bit to do so.

Of course, this kind of behavior is classically selfish in nature and serves to illustrate some of his dependency problems, but John Daly is the guy that most of us wish we could be -- sort of.

I hope he finds help for his drinking problems and becomes the golfer he should be on the tour.

Daly tweets writer's phone number (http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=4961360)

John Daly has prompted his followers on Twitter to complain to a Florida sportswriter whose story published Tuesday outlined the golfer's lengthy PGA Tour disciplinary file, as reported from public court documents.

Daly referred to Florida Times-Union golf writer Garry Smits as a "jerk" and posted the writer's personal cell phone number.

"Call and flood his line and let's tell him how we feel," Daly wrote.

He added two tweets on the matter, saying "this isn't journalism, it's paparrazi -- like gossip." In a later post, he again ran Smits' phone number.

The paper had been granted access to Daly's PGA Tour disciplinary file as part of a lawsuit Daly filed in 2005, accusing the Times-Union of libel.

The lawsuit was thrown out and when Daly's appeal was rejected late last year, the information became public record.

Smits said he attempted to reach Daly or his representatives for two weeks before the story was published with no response. Daly's agent, Bud Martin, was unable to be reached Wednesday morning -- by which time, the tweets had been removed.

Within a few hours of the post, Smits said he had received more than 30 messages on his cell phone. "None of them were threatening,'' he said. "It's not unlike anything I would get after covering the Florida-Georgia game.''

At a Master's practice round a few years ago, I watched him tee off on #17.  Man that dude can bust a golfball off the teebox.

That is all.

Edit:  I tell you who else can knock the cover off the ball but hardly looks like he's swinging, and that's Vijay Singh.  I've stood behind the tee box on #11 on two seperate occasions and watched him tee off.  Guy can drill a golfball.

There used to be a lot more players smoking 15-20 years ago.  Most of the younger dudes are more fitness freaks anymore to be smokers.  I remember seeing Nick Price & Ben Crenshaw (among others) sneaking smokes when they were hoping they weren't on camera.

I think it's because Vijay is so tall, that his swing looks effortless.  Even though he pounds the crap out of the ball.  #11 has gotta be a perfect driving hole for him with that high power fade.

I've seen Daly twice at the Master's Practice Rounds and both times he got with Fuzzy Zoeller for a practice round.  Fuzzy is great.  He' constantly plays to the crowd, jokes around, talks to everyone.  I figure those two have bent the elbow late into the night several times.
