Chile suffered a massive quake right near the city of Concepcion that was felt in Santiago, hundreds of miles away, which lost power as buildings swayed and glass broke.
As of this writing all Chilean news websites I tried were dead.
update:
Live TV from Chile was/is showing here:

This was the first thing I saw this morning when I got up for work. Damn. There are tsunami warnings in Hawaii... they said the wave is moving at 500mph.
The extent of the tsunami's ferocity is not yet known, but it has already reached the southern Juan Fernandez Islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Chile, where it was reported to have caused "serious damage".
The islands include one named after Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe's protagonist, and another named after Alexander Selkirk, the Scottish sailor whose real life experiences as a castaway are said to have inspired the 1719 novel.
An alert was issued by the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre which predicted damage to the Hawaiian coast from 9pm GMT today.

Wow.
-
The last report on Fox said less than 100 dead. Considering that so many live in the cities there, that is an amazingly low number. It was lucky that this happened at night when most people were in their homes instead of out on the streets.

Let's also remember that Chile has experience with earthquakes, so the building standards are a lot different from, say, Haiti.
FNC now saying 122 confirmed dead.
-
It's sounding like there could be more problems from the tsunamis than from the quake itself, now.
-
Haiti... Japan... Chile...
Everyone ready for the Rapture?
-
I heard Hillary was going to fly in tommorrow, can't she just pick up a phone? Last time, when she flew into Haiti, they diverted a medical plane so hers could land.
Oh, and just saw on the AP wire, Obama's in Maryland watching his daughter play basketball.
That tsunami warning looks even worse, the entire Pacific region is under a warning. Could be the worse tsunami to hit Hawaii since 1964 ! Saw Alaska and San Diego in the watch area too, as is Japan and Australia.
Stay safe, all you on the Pacific Rim !

You know there are some idiot surfers just waiting for this in California. :mental:
-
Tsunami hits French Polynesia... 6 foot swell... probably 60 foot waves... no damage reports yet
Hawaii getting prepared for hit.

Live News video from Hawaii

This is pretty amazing from a technology point of view. The national news networks will be giving live pictures of a tsunami as it hits. This is probably the first time we will see one, live, as it happens. I hope people heed the warnings and go to higher ground.

I hope its not too bad. They have shown people packing up and leaving.
-
Fox is reporting the tsunami will hit Hawaii in a bit less that hour and a half.
Fox is telling people to not go out to look for it....to take the precaution and head for safety....
-
I'm not seeing any video of Hawaii so far. CNN is still showing footage from Chile.
-
Switch to Fox....they have webcams set up....and are going back and forth between Chile and Hawaii.
-
The other TV has Fox on it, but I can hardly see it from here. :p

Sorry, forgot that you would be at work. :-*

I'm sitting next to some chick that failed geography. "Chile's up near Alaska, right?"

I have friends out in Hawaii that are breaking out the boards and kayaks for this.
-
CNN finally got video from Hawaii. It's traffic-jam time on the big island.
-
Still waiting for a tsunami. This is like watching paint dry.
-
Just catching up with this in Fox, apparently the sea has receded so much in Long Beach CA that boats are unable to dock.

She's not the only one ...
# Geography FAIL RT @palmd: Rick Sanchez just pointed at the Galapagos and said, "This is Hawaii, right?" #CNN #tsunami about 1 hours ago via TweetDeck

Rick Sanchez could be a geophary expert and he'd still be a Grade A dumbass.
-
Apparently Argentina has now had a 'quake too....6.something. 2 reported dead.
I don't know who all are watching Fox....but when they were showing the water off of Hawaii there were whales playing and coming up out of the water! It's mating season for them.
-
CNN keeps showing the same pile of rocks. I can't see a damn thing.
I thought I saw some flooding earlier.
-
It looks like Hawaii got lucky. New Zealand might not be so lucky.

So far, it appears this huge Hawaiian tsunami was predicted by the same scientists who are working on global warming. Remember them? They were the ones who told us it wouldn't get dark at night when Haley's Comet came around. The ones who tipped off Geraldo about Al Capone's vault, and now want to shut down American industry due to global warming.

I am sure when Hitlery shows her face in Chile there will be severe after shocks...

Video and pics from Chile are horrendous. A coastal city right at epicenter was hit by the quake and apparently a real tsunami almost immediatley afterwards. Someone said it looked like it had been nuked.

My sister in law served her mission there - in Concepcion - and is using every communications channel she has to determine the status of those she worked with. Of the 19 that she's still got an ongoing (electronic) dialogue with, she's heard from 5.
-
Good luck to your sister.
Meanwhile a Venezuelan blog says the quake made Santiago look like Caracas after 11 years of Hugo Chavez. So, the damage is immense.

Chile has a pretty stable Government and infrastructure. So, fortunately for them, they won't have to count on foreign help as much as Haiti did. Still, you can bet the US will bear the brunt of any aid provided.
My heart goes out to those in Chile.
-
I saw something on FNC (CNN, too) that stated that this earthquake had 800 to 900 times the energy of the Haitian quake. But, Chile is more used to these things than Haiti is, so the building codes and other infrastructure is a lot better than Haiti's.
Death toll, the last I looked, is up to 300+. There's no real commo with the southern part of Chile, so no one really knows how bad the damage is down there.

UPDATE: Coastal Town of Pellahue was totally washed away... 1000 residents.

6.3-Magnitude Aftershock Hits Off Chilean Coast
DEVELOPING: A strong 6.3-magnitude aftershock hit off the Chilean coast Wednesday, triggering new fears in the southern-central town of Concepcion just days after a massive 8.8-magnitude quake devastated the region.
Wednesday's quake was centered about 33 miles north-northwest of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles, the United States Geological Survey reported.
Emergency officials said there was no risk of a tsunami hitting the area shortly after the aftershock was felt.
Scared residents moved to higher ground, Reuters reported.
More than 800 people died after last weekend's quake and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has said the death toll could rise.

Don't know if this should be a separate thread or not...

Check this out. The number of aftershocks since the initial one are pretty significant. Yipes!
