I got ass ended by a 17 year old kid about an hour ago. I was sitting at a red light. Two cars in front of me. Light turns green and before any body moved, I got whacked. His car (Dodge Intrepid) was totaled. Hood was buckled half way up to the windshield. Grill and fan/radiator was trashed. He was 17 and coming from Swimming practice. I hope he wasn't texting or on the phone. We pulled into a CVS parking lot. He called his father, who drove up to the scene. His mother then shows up. No arguments. No accusations. No ranting, raving or DUmmying. He was a pleasant kid.
I had called the Police. I shoot every Wed night and had to inform the Police that I had two loaded guns on me. While waiting for the Police to arrive, we checked out my truck for damages. I have a 3/4 ton Chevy 4X4 pick up. The car had hit where my trailer hitch was. It went under my bumper and broke my harness where I hook up my travel trailer. The police arrived and took the statements. She asked me if I wanted to go to the Hospital. I told her no. I told her that I was fine. (Damn. No lawsuit money for me). After about five minutes, the Police lady brought my my papers, told me that she appreciated my telling them that I had a loaded gun on me and told me that I could go.

Damn... hope you (and your truck) are okay.

Still a little shaken up, but am at home with the wife and Dog. Dogs are great for calming one down.

I had a sore back last time I got rear-ended. Advil did the trick.
-
I am a little sore. Probably worse tomorrow. I do take two alieve because of a bad knee. It'll help.
-
Sorry about the accident, Tuck, but I'm glad you're okay. :cheersmate:
The kid will never forget his part of it, that's for sure.

Thanks. His father appreciated that fact that I didn't put the screws to the kid. I just wanted to get home.
-
Gosh Tucker, I'm glad to hear you are ok....
And good to hear the kid is too...Intrepid vs Chevy truck is not very good odds.
-
Sounds like a very civil encounter. Definitely couldn't be a DUmmie involved.
-
The main thing is that you were not hurt; a vehicle can be replaced. The time I got rear ended I had such a severe whiplash, I was afraid to move because I thought my neck was broken. Totaled my 2 month old new car but I was glad that my injuries were minor.
-
Glad you are OK Tucker.
-
Thankfully nobody was seriously injured.
-
Glad to hear things worked out and that no one was seriously hurt.
-
You will probably get sued. :p
The guy who rear-ended a friend tried to sue my friend. People can be asses.

Gotta agree with ya, FGL . . . There definitely wasn't a DUmb**** involved.
-
Glad you are ok! Accidents are never fun, but this one seemed on the "easy" end of the spectrum at least!
-
Glad to hear you're OK, Tucker. I had a similar accident happen in 2000. I wasn't so lucky.
-
Thur AM.
My left shoulder and wrist are sore as all get out. I had my left hand on the steering wheel. The jolt had to have done it. I imagine that they will be better a a couple of days. Right now they hurt.
I have to call my insurance co. today. No fault laws suck. I'm responsible for my damages.

You know, I think it's a credit to the basic decency of the population of the Cave that no one has stepped up to spike this oh-so-tempting lob.
Yet.
(Glad you're okay Tucker.)

In Texas? I thought we had that law thingy????
Tucker, glad you are ok, it probably wouldn't hurt to get an xray if your shoulder bothers you much more.

I don't know what law protects Texans from stupid lawsuits, but sign me up. This particular friend lives in Oklahoma. The guy who sued my friend was claiming my friend had no right to be idling at a stop sign. Crazy people, they are everywhere.

I was talking about the rear-end liability law, in Texas. I hit a car once, that hit a car, that hit a car, that hit a car, and so on, I had to pay for them all. And, I was promptly dismissed from having USAA insurance.

There was a few cars in front of me, but I left room while stopped at the light. You never know when you'll need to make a fast break to the left or to the right. Because of this, I didn't hit the car in front of me.

I learned that the hard way. Hope your arm/shoulder gets better soon.

I'd probably recommend getting yourself checked out by a medical professional. I didn't hurt at the time of my accident and started hurting later that afternoon. It turns out I wound up with a whiplash injury that resulted in a fusion to C3-C5 in my neck.

Yep, I got hit by a guy in a Dodge Ram, doing about 53 mph, while waiting at a stop sign back in 2004. Didn't hurt that day, adrenaline likely, but ended up having to go to a chiropractor for adjustments and electrotherapy for edema in my lumbar region.

Barring anything unforeseen, I'm going to try and give it a few days.

If it were me, I would go to the Dr. immediately. You never know and it probably will not cost you anything.

If your head gets heavy, and it seems hard to hold up or you go to sleep easily....go get it checked.
I was a passenger in the backseat of a car that was stopped at a red light and rear-ended. I thought I was alright too until the above started happening about 3 weeks later.
I had a whiplash and ended up in PT for 3 months.
Neck was already a bit screwed up from accident when 13, but this happened when I was 21 and it's been screwed up ever since. Now it makes little grating noises even when I'm not moving my head.... :(

I gotta agree with those counseling a check up Tuck. "Toots" was T-Boned about 2 months ago. She felt fine for a coupla a days and then started losing feeling in her arm. Turns out she had a pinched nerve. Nothing to **** with! Doc told her he should have at least got a check up immediately after the accident.

Zero bongs, no bounce. Are you sure the cops did not jump out of the bushes?
Glad you are ok.

Very smart of you. I always try to make sure I can see the bottom of the tires of any vehicle in fron of me when I stop at a light. I also try to keep a "ditch space" open on one side or the other when the vehicle is moving. As you said, you never know when you might have to make a quick break to the right or left. I've had that general rule save me from an accident more than once.

I' ve spoken to three different agents at my insurance company (GMAC) today. The agent for health claims will keep my claim open in case I develop a problem relating to the rear end collision at a later date. The agent for the accident is going to wave my deductable. It won't cost me any money for the repairs. The adjuster brought over the repair authorization to give to the Chevy dealer.
All in all, it makes a bad situation almost bearable.

The cop knew I was armed. I told the dispatch when I called to report the accident.
An armed society is a polite society. :-)

Very true Allos, also don't forget that the very first insurance adjuster on the scene is possibly the most important person you will talk to. { EX father -in-law was an adjuster, as first on the scene it was his report that held the most credability. He was very good at his job, like a cop, he could could tell when someone was BS'ing him.}
Never admit responsibility for accident or give them an excuse for causing the accident. If hit from the back end at a full stop and you plow into the car in front, you have to expect the guy that hit you will swear your tail lights were out and they did not know you were at a full stop.
Be prepared for your driving record to be examined from the time you first got your license, don't matter if it has been 30 years ago with even one conviction.
Even in the case of being hit head on by a drunk driver, questions will be asked about why you did not take evasive actions. Were you changing the radio station, talking on a cell phone, where had you been before the accident--a Bar perhaps. Where were you going at the time, what was YOUR mental state at the time.
Very tricky and everything you say to cops or medics will be used against you.
If for instance you have the sun in your eyes on a stretch of road that you drive every day and you hit a car coming on to the highway, You can be blamed for not wearing sunglasses or have the drivers shade pulled down----You are aware that your vision will be blocked by the sun and to not take steps to insure you can see will be negligence on your part.
Never sign off on any accident, as has been pointed out, body damage can take weeks to months to appear.
One biggie that hit a family member was a family that trusted their son to take their car to work every day. The boy was talked into lending dads car to a co-worker to run 5 miles to pick up 2 other kids that needed rides to work on summer vacation. The driver picked up my family member and showing off for some girls hit a tree and destroyed 2 other cars. Family member was OK except for lots of blood, the driver had a broken arm.
The owner of the car and his son were held responsible even as they were no where near the accident.
Please remember, when you turn over the keys to anyone, they may lend the car to someone you do not know, they in turn turn over the keys to someone else. What ever happens then is on your back, anything goes wrong, you pay for it.

Why would you be responsible for the damages when you got hit? Did the other driver not have insurance?

No fault state.

No fault state.
Michigan's another state like that -- another reason why I fled that sucking chest wound in the southeastern part of the state.

Yet they will raise your insurance rates if you get in an accident by no fault of your own.

No. They won't go up............................this year.

They usually wait until you renew the policy. "Toots" got T-Boned a few months back. It was totally the other guys fault, yet when we renewed, our rates went up 20 bucks!
