As the parent of a very bright African American male, this is a subject of great interest to me. I think I am going to look into a "Big Brother" type program and see if there are some Black men for him to be paired with. I'm going to see if I can push for some Black male teachers. Of course some of his coaches are black, as is his hip-hop teacher :wtf2:

4. I think you might find that other black adult males may attempt to hinder him too. They are often filled with loathing for members of their own race. If you truly want your son to succeed, don't let the color of his mentors skin be an obstacle, rather choose his mentors by their character.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of Blacks that will do everything they can to promote failure in your son. From the education/talking/high performing is white to the attempts to get him involved in dysfunctional behavior (illegal) and the ever present attempts to just beat the hell out of him - (two goals: beat him up and get him identified in the system as a potential criminal).

"Crabs in the barrel" is a common phrase in black culture, and it refers to the specific phenomenon of blacks preferring to pull other blacks down when they attempt to rise, instead of preferring to see them as an inspirations and example. IE, the "education is a white thing" mentality amongst many black youth, especially the males.
But somehow "evil whitey" is STILL the mastermind of black failure to achieve. Equality of opportunity isn't the goal, it's equality of outcome, and that's just communist, no matter what color you are, and always leads to the dominance of the lowest common denominator.

If my kids were gifted, I'd start by getting them enrolled in gifted classes in school (actually, the teachers might have beat me to it), then I'd contact Mensa.
Last time I checked, both the school system and Mensa welcome blacks.

The school system might, but as one of the DUmmies mentioned in that thread, "black culture" still looks down upon those that are smart as acting white.

It all depends what kind of "education" you're talking about. If it's a "street education," yeah, a hip-hop "teacher" could do something . . . er, "positive" about gaining one's diploma in "street." If you're talking about a classical education of the three R's, well, then . . . not so much. :mental:
