What do you think will happen in 2012?
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 05:42 PM by kimmerspixelated
Not the election, the mayan end date. This is not a spiritual question but possibly one about astrophysics. I have been reading several books on the subject, and am halfway through another one that covers all the main points of speculation.
One particular scenario is called the Galactic Superwave Theory, which if imminent is much too late once actually discovered/seen, as one might bring a huge amount of interstellar debris, and we won't be able to see it coming. This would be attracted into the gravitational field of the sun and the dust would form a shroud around our star. This study theorizes this is exactly what might have wiped out the dinosaurs.
Is the Galactic Superwave Theory also what is behind the theory of a possible pole reversal?
Also, what about the end of TIME AS YOU KNOW IT?? FRACTAL TIME?? This is the most out there theory, and the most interesting of all!
There are so many theories of what physically may or may not happen. I am not a doomsday advocate. I personally think it is possible that the sun may darken for a few days, which might scare the crap out of us, naturally, and that we will have some very extreme weather for awhile. Spiritually? That's another discussion!

10. As I understand it, isn't he kind of out there? Claiming that the laws of thermodynamics are flawed,
and getting into zodiac/ancient Egypt codes and ESP? I ask in the nicest possible way, and without judgment of your beliefs.
Isn't he a ****ing nutbag, slightly worse than ronulans?....no offense...

14. I thought it had something to do with the galactic center
Like, the position of Earth/Milky Way as it spins around over time (and of course, the Mayan calendar was based upon planetary/cosmic events/positions) and the gravitational force related to the big black hole at the center of the galaxy. Something like that.
Not saying I buy the theory, but I cannot dismiss it out of hand simply because I don't understand it enough. But I know it's not just some random shit pulled out of someone's rear.

25. For the Mayans, not necessarily us. Not being a Mayanologist I don't know
how they number their calendar years. It's just really a chronological date. That's all. It's a astronomical date for a civilization that is different from ours. I have read that the descendent's of the Maya who live in Central America today think this is all hyperbole from people who don't understand them or their culture.

51. Why was this moved to the Science forum?
Doesn't seem to have anything to do with science...
Oh, and by the way, I'll turn 40.

52. not to toot my own horn but...
i might be the closest thing to an expert on this stuff that DU has (though please do feel free to knock me down a peg). I also haven't read every post here, so I have no clue if I'm being repetitive.
Anyway, I *almost* have a PhD in Latin American history, with an emphasis in the history of Mexico's indigenous populations. I've extensively studied the Mayas and their culture and religion and spent much time on the Yucatan peninsula. My adviser is a Mayan specialist, and has copious contacts with Mayan elders and spiritual leaders.
2012 is *not* an end date. There have been stela dated to 4000+ ad. The thing with the Mayan calendar is this-it's cyclical, as I'm sure you know. It's also one of many calendars that they used and the most important one for our purposes, the tzolk'in, is very complicated to understand.
All Mesoamericans believed that the world in which we all live now is but one in a cycle of worlds that the gods created. The gods, unlike the Judeo-Christian God, are fallible and the first cycles of worlds were mistakes. This world is not a mistake, but the Mayans also believe that when this cycle ends, another one will take its place.
Let me put it another way- Mayans in the Yucatan and Guatemalan think the hysteria over 2012 is funny, and probably a little annoying.
So, as I tell my students every semester, keep paying your bills...the world isn't ending on 21 December 2012...at least not for everyone.
I almost have a twelve inch penis...

Not to be confused with Mayonologist which is the belief that the universe will be destroyed by a giant jar of Hellman's.

You know... the Mayan Calendar did not say that the world was ending in 2012. That's just when the calendar ended.
It's like looking at the calendar on your wall, and seeing that it ends on December of 2010, and thinking the world is going to end on New Years eve. ::)

I fully expect two years of constant bullying after the rout this November about civil unrest if Obumbler is not reelected.

There were, of course, plenty of knuckleheads doing exactly that back in 1999.

Who is to say if anyone of us will be here on that date, we may not even notice if we are here as the war with Korea and the middle east may be in the fore most of our problems.
Mayans and their religious beliefs have made big money to Authors that sell out on the idea that 2012 will be a year of major change. Well is not every year a year of major change for all of us.
The year 2012 will be much like every other year for us. New amazing inventions on the market, medical break through for major diseases, new technology that we can not even imagine today.
Personally there will be births and deaths, floods, hurricanes, tornado's, volcano's blowing sky high. Famine and new diseases, ---we have seen enough of the astrology stuff to know that " When the moon is in the second house and Jupiter and Mars align," life still goes on.
Now, America, South America, Canada, parts of Europe and beyond are full of believers that after 10,000 years peace will come, UFOs will show themselves and the Lock Ness Monster will come ashore to give tours of the Lock with 100 people at a time riding on its back.
Kind of reminds me of the sad story of the Jehovah Witnesses who in the early 1900's sold every thing they owned or gave it away as they assembled by the thousands on a mountain top waiting for the end of the world. It must have been a major bummer the next day when they awoke to the world as usual and they had nothing but the cloths on their backs.
It does worry me about the ancestors of the Mayans in South and Central America that as the time gets nearer to the promised time of their ancestors they may riot or or after the fact loose all faith in their forefathers.
This will be for them as bad as it would be for Christians to be given proof the Jesus survived the cross and went on to marry/ and or was gay.
This will be a disaster for them, as it would be for us. This does not look good and we are going to have to prepare for any way it goes for millions of heart broken people.
I have been reading too much of my neighbor Dan Brown and the Illuminati,
Damn this is much like the Indian Chief that was being besieged by our army in the mid west. For 30 or more hours the tribe danced and sang to bring the Hero God to protect them. Instead of having faith in themselves and mounting up to meet the enemy they danced and sang expecting help and deliverance from the massacre that was to come. There is a slim chance had they attacked first instead of praying they or some of them would have lived to fight another day.
As it was in the begining, is now and ever -----World with out end---Amen.

Obviously the world will end in 2012, which is why ObamaCare doesn't start until 2014. Except for the taxing part. All the cokeheads in congress need to build up their party stash.
-
Its just a calendar that's about to run out of 'pages' and needs to be replaced with a new one, that is all. There is no cosmic event that is going to start an end-times scenario scheduled for that day..
Ancient calendars are also notoriously hard to read.
For example - the so called Age of Aquarius
Some think it started circa 1450 and that it will end circa 3600 - several others place the beginning of the age later than the 15th century, and there are others still, who think we are in the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius has yet to begin.
Like the Mayan calendar - these zodiac ages are derived from stargazing and calculating the incremental positional shifts of the stars in an attempt to understand what a complete cycle is.

I saw a show debunking the Mayan calendar thing. The Mayans placed no significance on the start of a new calendar cycle. It's the same thing as our calendar going from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000 (the "end of the world" kooks were out then, too) or your car mileage turning from 59,999.9 to 60,000.0.
