Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh will not seek re-election this year, a decision that hands Republicans a prime pickup opportunity in the middle of the country.
"After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so by serving in Congress has waned," Bayh will say.
Bayh will announce the decision at a press conference later today. He was first elected to the Senate in 1998 and was re-elected easily in 2004. National Republicans had recruited former Sen. Dan Coats to challenge Bayh in 2010 although polling suggested Bayh began the race with a 20-point edge. He also had $13 million in the bank at the end of the year. ...

I kind of doubt it. He's been a moderate Dem all along, unless he's getting a big payoff of some kind, I don't see why he'd switch ideology at this point.

A few months ago, Mr. Snuggle Bunny said the Obama election was better for the country than if McCain were to win. If we can make it to the November elections, he may be proven correct again!

It's not sinking fast enough for me. He is still hell bent on gov. health care, cap and trade, tax increases, more rules and regulations by exec. order, etc.

Democrats and Repubs are going to have to face the voters at rallies, at their office and at debates. Those that have not been listening to their constituents are going to get an ear full. Good riddance, I hope. After the Repubs take over the House and possibly the Senate, they should tell the President that we won and here are our plans. Take or leave it. Let's play hardball.

Gregg is one--who announced he wouldn't be running again years ago. Then you've got LeMieux and Voinovich (RINO's), Bond, Bunning, and Brownback--of the three, only Bond announced his retirement after the 2008 election. It's unlikely any of those seats will go to Democrats.
Now, with Bayh's announced retirement, you've got Dem Senators retiring (add Dodd, Kaufman, Burris, Dorgan) who, in several cases, will flip to GOP seats. Couple that with the other probable Dem losses (Lincoln, Specter, Reid, to name a few), and it's entirely possible the Senate WILL revert back to the GOP.
Throw in a couple of surprise upsets like Gillenbrand, Murray, Boxer, and Feingold, and Zerobama is toast.

And the more he pushes, the more bleak will the Dems outlook become in November.......look for more to jump ship, rather than face election defeat.

I hope the DNC reads Bayh's retirement correctly. They need to run hard to the left to keep the seat. The reason the voters are upset is because the Dems aren't progressive enough. Hard left, dems, hard left!

Senator Mikulski of Maryland to Retire
I've just heard from an impeccable source that Barbara Mikulski, the Democratic Senator who is up for reelection this November, will choose to retire. Mrs. Mikulski is expected to make her formal announcement in the next few days.
Mrs. Mikulski seriously fractured her right ankle last fall just prior to Edward M. Kennedy's death. Due to the severity of the fracture, she had to have open reduction surgery, that included the insertion of pins, as well as the use of special surgical boots, during recovery. She had tried to arrive in time for Mr. Kennedy's funeral but was turned away.
Her recovery has been exceptionally slow and she is evidently still in a great deal of pain. Reportedly, she has told her physician that she does not desire to seek reelection. Additionally, friends and family have been saying in the near future she will announce her retirement. Because of the very slow recovery, she has been forced to use a wheelchair, a walker or a cane in order to get around.
One of her complaints is that the health insurance that is provided for Congress is "poor" with high deductibles and "limitations" on coverage. My contact tells me that she told an aide that she should have inserted in the ObamaCare bill an amendment to improve Congressional health insurance! ...

I just hope Repubs do not get suckered into the trap that Obama is laying for them on health care and other issues. Dim bulbs like McCain pees in his pants and gets that shit eating grin on his face every time Obama mentions his name.

The Indiana Democrat, whose retirement came as a surprise to many in his state and on Capitol Hill, lamented that partisan gridlock has made his job less gratifying and suggested he could serve the people of his state better in the private sector or at a non-profit. Calling his decision a "very difficult, deeply personal" one, Bayh said he had no interest in running in November solely "for the sake of winning an election."
