People Become More Liberal With Age

March 10) - The stereotype of a cranky old man, set in his ways, getting more conservative by the day, is an enduring one. But new research has debunked the myth that people become more conservative as they age.
By comparing surveys of various age groups taken over a span of more than 30 years, sociologists found that in general, Americans' opinions veer toward the liberal as they grow older.
"All the evidence we have found refutes the idea that as people age their attitudes become more conservative or more rigid," said Nicholas Danigelis, a sociologist at the University of Vermont. "It's just not true. More people are changing in a liberal direction than in a conservative direction."
Danigelis and collaborators Stephen Cutler of the University of Vermont and Melissa Hardy of Pennsylvania State University analyzed data from the U.S. General Social Surveys of 46,510 Americans between 1972 and 2004. While the surveys did not provide data for the same individuals at different stages, they represented snapshots of the changing attitudes of respondents in different age cohorts over time. The researchers corrected for the fact that the age groups at different survey times are made of up new members with unique baseline opinions...

I hope that is true.

But could it be the times? How could any older person with a sense of self-preservation back a conservative agenda in these times? Any non-rich older person, that is!
I have noticed all the older people at our Democratic events. Often they are the most liberal people there. I have to admit that surprised me.
I have told my children that if I get more conservative as I age, they should call me on it. I don't want to abandon my principles. My oldest daughter says I have nothing to worry about. She thinks I lean more to the left with each passing year.

Long haired gray hippies never grew up.
This is news?

Massive amounts of weed, shrooms and prescription drugs can cause someone to remain as braindead as a teenager? No kidding!! :whatever:
-
It is a statistical FACT that people become more conservative once they get older and after they've entered the job market with the intention of succeeding.......which is anathema to the DUmmies.

I question whether this actually distinguished "Liberal" and "Libertarian" successfully, took account of self-interest in the kinds of 'Liberal' programs supported, or where exactly the 30 years of samples came from (College freshman psych students at the drafter's university for the past 30 years?).

From the actual article.
People might find an average 60-year-old to be more conservative than an average 30-year-old, Danigelis said, but beware of extrapolating a trend. The older person, for example, might have started off even more conservative than he or she is now.
I guess the way they corrected for it was to ignore the findings that contradicted the outcome they desired. :whatever:

Definition of a conservative:
A liberal that has been mugged by reality.
:-)
-
The only thing I find is some who start off conservative tend to drift Libertarian with age -- very few have drifted to the moonbat wing of the libertarian party that Ive met.
They do not go from Conservative to DUmmy.. Ever.

Tell another lie Pinnochio.

This is just another study in liberal projection. The goal of the study is to take what liberals want folks to believe, which isn't the truth, and make it common knowledge.
Remember the "study" which concluded conservatives are emotionally ill and unhappy people? Can projection get any more blantant? I don't think so. Not even with this lastest attempt to fool the masses.
-
The only ones I see that drift to Liberal with age seemed to have experienced some sort of neurological event.

The study I remember stated the exact opposite.

Doesn't it warm your heart to know the Jost report was taxpayer funded? Over one million dollars! A lie bought and paid for.
