Campaign Promises AT RISK: Obama says won't rule out raising taxes on middle-class
Source: BusinessWeek
Obama ‘Agnostic’ on Deficit Cuts, Won’t Prejudge Tax Increases
President Barack Obama said he is “agnostic†about raising taxes on households making less than $250,000 as part of a broad effort to rein in the budget deficit.
Obama, in a Feb. 9 Oval Office interview, said that a presidential commission on the budget needs to consider all options for reducing the deficit, including tax increases and cuts in spending on entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
...
In the interview, Obama said that putting preconditions on the agenda of a bipartisan advisory commission, which he said he would soon establish, would just undermine its purpose.
“What I can’t do is to set the thing up where a whole bunch of things are off the table,†Obama said. “Some would say we can’t look at entitlements. There are going to be some that say we can’t look at taxes, and pretty soon, you just can’t solve the problem.â€
(Much more, please read the full thing, it paints a very complicated and uncertain picture about what the administration will ultimately do)
The article also states that in August both Summers and Giethner went on the record saying the administration would be open to going back on its pledge of no increased taxes on middle class families. However, the Gibbs came out and reiterated the Presidents commitment to the pledge.
The comments from Obama, however, come from this month. This isn't intended to be a "gotcha" post. It is intended to be a "heads up!" post.
Clearly some in the administration are pushing to raise taxes on the middle class and cut entitlements while also pushing to cut taxes on the rich - Summers and Giethner to call two of them out. And I would describe these recent comments by Obama as "vague."
We need to be alert to what is going on and make sure that we are very active in strongly opposing any attempt to push the cost of fixing corporate and conservative mistakes with the economy onto middle class families!
Hopefully its clear to everyone now how awful the influence of Summers, Giethner and Emmanuel are on Obama.

DUmmie still hasn't figured out; It's the spending stupid!
This is a huge long thread but what is interesting is, I don't think I've ever seen a thread with so many deleted messages that is still going. I don't know what that's all about but there are buku deleted messages.
Some of the DUmmies are pulling for (_!_)bama to go ahead and let the tax increases trickle on down to those making $100k (these are presumably the DUmmies who make less than that. Others are saying a promise is a promise!! Figure out how to make it happen Uncle 'O'!!
Fun reading.

As soon as the first affirmative action precident knows what he is doing he will let us know and I'm sure the words "As I have always said..."

Dear DUmmies,
You **DO** realize that when the Bush 2001-03 tax cuts expire at the end of the year, your taxes WILL go up, right? Is that not a tax increase?

Oh they think they didn't get the tax cut Sparky. ::) My lib friend called me after her husband got her first check of the year asking me why his check was $500 less than it had been last year. I told her that they had reached the social security limit after they moved to CA last year because of the raise and bonus they gave them to move (her husband works for my husband) and so the paychecks that they were getting after they moved didn't have SS taken out because they reached the limit (I think it was $106k last year). She was all "waaahhh why are they doing this to us.....we need that money.....we are poor". ::) I told her about the tax increases that are coming her way and she swore that they didn't get a tax cut from Bush. I have done their taxes a few times over the past 8 years, they got a tax cut. Her husband was standing by her and she said he said that I would blame democrats and I said, yep.
I was driving home from taking my daughter to school this morning and there was an ad on the radio about EIC. How the government will "GIVE" you extra money if you earn X amount or less. They said you could get back over $5k. It pissed me off, the government is advertising about giving "free" (to them) money. Someone has to pay for it, it doesn't grow on trees.

58. Actually, that is one of his campaign promises that was stupid
The only thing that is going to get us out of a jobless recovery is government spending, and you need taxes for that. Steep graduation should keep the hit from being excessive on the lower end of the scale.
:banghead: Gaggghhh, the stoopid, it burns.

64. No. We can balance the budget on the backs of the wealthy. We did it for most of the last century.

1% of the nation now have 50% of the income. They can afford a huge tax hike. Note, that these 1% get most of their money through capital gains, which apparantly isn't income and is taxed at a lower rate than income.
How about taxing the 50% that pay NOTHING and are leeches?

79. Why do I get the ever increasing feeling that Obama is nothing but a stealth conservative
A health bill without a public option, that taxes union benefits and limits women's right to choose. Bailing out the banks, the wealthy and elite while the rest of us go to hell. A stimulus that is made up of forty percent tax cuts, the least effective stimulus measure out there, but hot damn, it helps out the rich and well off. And lest we forget, he has doubled down twice on an illegal, immoral war.
Now he is going to go back on his promise about not taxing the middle class? With a bonus, he's going to latch onto that third raid and cut SS and Medicare benefits.
What, exactly is liberal about this man? This is just like Bill Clinton, get elected as a Dem, govern like a moderate 'Pug.
That dime's worth of difference has officially shrunk to just two cents. Wake up people!
Obama a stealth conservative?!

Obama a stealth conservative?!
Well, then, Lockeed Martin will pay billions to get their hands on that "stealth" system! :thatsright:
What ****ing no-minds. :mental:

I think the number of broken promises outweighs the number kept something like 1000-1

It must have been somebody speaking truth because they removed ALL the posts.
Some of them are sure going through some contortions to make sense of this.

LOL!
I was talking to a lib buddy of mine the other day and he was 'informing me' that the tax cuts that were expiring couldn't be counted as tax increases! hahahahahahaha
I told him they would reach farther down than he thought and he said 'naw'. I can't wait until those tax cuts start expiring .... the liberal whining is going to be huge! Hell, even the DUmmies may start paying for "Miss Me Yet?" billboards.

Uh, nope--try again:

For 2007, top 1 percent made 22 percent of the income, and paid 40 percent of all taxes.

Sparky they are also discounting what the economists said during the campaign. They said you could tax those making more than $250k/year at 100% and still not pay for the spending.
