Oh my.
With all the troubles in the world, the primitives are still flummoxed by the "rec/unrec" function so magnanimously given them by my fellow alum.

Rec / Unrec Advise
OK, suppose there is a story that shocks the conscience (yes, I have one, I'm a progressive). It's really horrible. I want to stopped/avoided/whatever.
Do I rec or unrec?
I mean: I feel weird reccing because I feel I'm endorsing the horror that offends me but if I unrec then I do a disservice to the person kind enough to bring this to our attention.
Rec with comment?

1. I assume the purpose of "REC" is to bring attention to a thread...of significant importance that it should be highlighted for others to read. I have never understood why some seem to think they must "approve" of whatever the issue is in order to think it important and thus to recommend. The most important stories of 2001 were 911 related. Did any of us approve of 911?

2. I totally understand what you are saying...
but starting any thread regarding the unrec function, regardless of how innocent the question, will get you massive unrecs.
That said, I know, it's a quandary for me as well. So what I usually do in that case is neither rec or unrec.

3. I was wondering why...
...I was suddenly in the minus territory.
I would have thought the question was innocuous enough.
Okay, people, confess up.
It was franksolich's turn to do the unrec'ing on Skins's island today.

11. because unrec is here to stay whether it makes sense or not
even though it is divisive and unproductive..even though it angers me that people unrec a news article without reading..just reminds us that there are some on this board with poop for brains..

14. That solves the problem for me, too
Read, comment if I feel like it, or back out if I don't feel like commenting, and neither rec nor unrec.
In fact, that's one reason why I usually don't rec or unrec. Matters of conscience vs the squeamishness factor vs what may or may not be "important" enough for others to read.
Too complicated for me to decide. So I don't.

Stop the horror!
A report by numerous animal rights groups has cast an incriminating light on a secret plan by Karl Rove to provide under-aged baby harp seals for sexual exploitation at the next Neoconservative political rally atop the smoldering remains of Port Au Prince, Haiti...
HOW THE HELL COULD I REC SOMETHING LIKE THAT?!?!
Still, it would be something people need to see.
BTW - I did not know unreccing drove down a thread. I thought it was mostly just an ego slap. I shall be more diligent in the future, thank-you.

9. But I don't want to hide threads.
Sometimes bad news should be brought to our attention.

7. My rule is simply "don't shoot the messenger".
If it is important, it gets a rec for being posted regardless of the flavor of the news itself.

10. I'll share what I have observed with you.
Any posts regarding the Rec/Unrec feature always get numerous Unrecs.
Watch what happens to this one.

12. That is what rec is for.
It doesn't mean you agree with the news; it means you think it's something more people should know about.
PS - "Advise" is a verb, you wanted "advice".

16. I recommend threads with OPs worthy of the Greatest Page.
That means I consider everything. If the story is about some heinous matter, I'm not dissuaded from recommending it unless it is objectionable for some other reason.
Source matters. If it's from a shady source, I don't recommend it.
Whether I agree with the tenor of the article is immaterial, if I think it should be read.

The most imortant thing about 'Unrec' is to be sure to do it on any threads posted by some PW'd joker who lives in a cat bathroom and calls himself 'Stinky the Clown.'

OK, suppose there is a story that shocks the conscience (yes, I have one, I'm a progressive).
If you do have a conscience (doubtful), your problem is that you don't have the mental capacity to know how and when to apply it. But you're on an island with like individuals, and when you compare yourself to the lowest common denominator such as your fellow primitives, you reach false conclusions.
But as far as rec/unrec, do what libs always do: Take no thought into what is best and just do what "feels" right.
