Questlove (drummer for The Roots, Jimmy Fallon's band) not amused by NBC 's Black History Lunch Menu
Questlove Not Amused by NBC 's "Black History" Lunch Menu
after which a photo of the actual racist menu appears
Questlove, who works in the NBC building as a member of the Jimmy Fallon show, just tweeted the lunch menu in honor of black history month, which included fried chicken, collared greens and cornbread. Needless to say, The Roots drummer/producer was perplexed.
Aside from the link to the photo, all Questo had to say was "Hmm ?" implying that he might not have been the biggest fan of the meal selection, well intentioned as it may have been.

30. Yeah, it's most likely the black chef's attempt to take a stab at white people.
No wait, I mean black people. Or maybe she was just trying to insult rice. You know, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Well, restaurants for one specify "white rice". Honestly. Also, people attempting to describe their dishes will specify "white rice", because, you know, there's more than just one type of rice out there. But I'm rather interested in hearing what you think this chef's intentions were? Was specifying "white rice" supposed to be a slur against whites? Blacks maybe? I'm quite befuddled.
Edited to add: Would you have preferred if the chef simply referred to the Black Eyed Peas simply as "Eyed Peas"? It seems to me you're suggesting something wrong with "White rice/Black eyed peas." You seem to be suggesting now that you don't think it was racist. Well, if you didn't think it was racist, why on earth would you make that post complete with your "rolling eyes" emoticon?

49. Food is Not Racist
People are racist. Parents here in CO got upset when DPS served fried chicken for MLK day but none of those clueless idiots understood that fried chicken was Dr. King's favorite meal. There is nothing racist about this menu. Period.
What's that line about "sound and fury, signifying nothing..."? As for this drummer dude, who gives two farts what he thinks? His opinion is not more important because he is on television or is in a band, you know...but there are a lot of celebrity/hero worshipers around this site, so I'm not that surprised I guess.

It's a hoot watching what DUmmies think "racism" is.

FYI. I do not discriminate with my bean. I like em white, black, and red.
I really don't like brown rice.

I dream of a world where red beans and black beans can rest comfortably together on a mountain of white and brown rice--where yellow and white corn can mix freely with red, black and white pepper. Where a whitefish can be served with black angus beef.

And so, all that really matters to these DUmmies is skin color and nothing else.
Person 1 has a wild and irrational opinion
Person 2 hears it.
Person 2: "What color is he?"
Person 3: "He's white."
Person 2: "Oh, never mind then. If he was black, I might have listened, but he's just some (blank blank blank) white guy and thus not worthy of my attention."
Person 4 has exactly the same opinion as person 1
Person 2 hears it.
Person 2: "Oh, and what color is this guy."
Person 3: "He's black."
Person 2: "Oh, cool. This guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about."
Person 3: "But he said the exact same thing as person 1."
Person 2: "Yes, but that guy was white, and therefore his opinion doesn't count for anything."
Person 3: "But-"
Person 2: "It doesn't matter if person 1 is nuts, he's black and that's all that matters."
Nope, no racism here...

Well, it's pretty much the story of you DUmmies' life:
Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
(from MacBeth, also used in Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury)
Well, hot damn! That English major finally came in handy!

After a few people chimed in on how racist this all seemed, and wondered why NBC didn't just go ahead and serve watermelon and Kool menthols, a voice of reason entered the discussion and added this juicy tidbit:
One person who doesn't understand how offense could be taken: Chef Leslie Calhoun. It was her decision to select the menu items and create the sign. TheGrio caught up with her minutes after the tweet fiasco erupted and she seemed genuinely upset by the whole thing. Calhoun is an African-American and employee of Flick, a catering service that runs the NBC commissary. She said that for the last eight years she's been seeking approval from Flick management for a special Black History Month menu, and had finally been told that every Thursday for the month of February, she could serve whatever she chose.
More to come...
-
Someone mentioned that too. Somehow its only okay if a black chef does it. As if THAT isn't racist.

123. you are way off base.
My son is black. I have studied and had countless in-depth discussions with African Americans - including a former Black Panther - about Racism and discrimination in America.
Evidently I wasn't the only one to equate same. So if a "white chef" had done it would it still be ok? Really?

143. Ooo! That's just one step above "some of my best friends are black!"
That being said, so ****ing what? If all you have to fall back on is a hypothetical "white chef" scenario and a defense of "my son is black!" and "I've had a lot of discussions with my black friends!" (which you *think* gives you extra-special insight and uber-liberal sensitivity on the black experience in America, but you would be VERY wrong, and in reality it all just makes you a sanctimonious scold), you have already lost the argument.
Extra bonus points for the implication that the chef is a self-hating African American woman who would be lost without your white liberal guilt to enlighten her. Nothing like patronizing white liberals to tell African Americans "their place", eh?

157. You indicated I was racist.
I'm not - which I think is amply illustrated by the fact that my son is black.
I'm here to tell you that I grew up racist. I grew up in GA and Alabama. I grew up with racism and all it's ugliness.
I overcame my racism. Quite frankly, I worked at it to rid myself of the thoughts that had been pounded into me by my environment.
Yeah - I HAVE spent a great deal of time and study and conversation on blacks in America. On racism. On being a black man.On driving while black. On every single issue that is important to African Americans. This wasn't casual conversation - I wanted - nay, I NEEDED - to learn everything I could. To try and understand everything that African Americans go through, think, feel, etc - so I could help my son grow up proud and cognizant of the issues in the AA community.
I'll say it one more time, I learned of "internalized racism" from a Black Culture class taught by a professor who was a Black Panther and is still a huge activist. bell hooks is a very good source for reading and understanding about this issue. It is a very real issue.
Now, really, I think you are way out of ilne. I am NOT the only one to be leary of the action - in fact, quite a few AA are upset by it as well. Who are YOU to tell them they can't be upset, eh?

Agree, but the Blacks themselves as individuals are not racists until they come across someone that is. Same goes for all of us.
Racists you say, So my Saint Patricks day meal of corn beef and cabbage must be prepared by an Irishman.?
Easter meal of boiled eggs and Kalbasa has to be cooked by a Polish cook .?
Who's that in the kitchen, some white guy cooking my Chinese dinner.?
Do I get up and leave when a Mexican is cooking Yellow rice at an Indonesian restaurant.?
Twist that, an Indonesian making tacos at a Mexican restaurant.?
Rice comes in many forms, white, short and long grained, brown, sticky rice that wonderful food that one rolls into balls to eat. Perhaps another 20 or so types of rice that we have yet to try. Wild rice don't count that is in the nut family, makes our Moose and Deer big and strong.
So If I am to be a raciest I have to dine on British kidney pie, Haggis, fish and chips, and snails.? Forget it Southern food is not racial it tastes good and even the folks from the North will chow down.
It may come to note that some people have allergy's to some foods. It is wise to denote the menu so anyone that cannot tolerate white rice in any form is aware of what they are eating.
When I hear of Soul food I think of the area of the country it is from, same as Peanuts, who thinks of them as soul food.?
-
