Save the "..eating healthy is too expensive" bullshit....

along with the "...focus on jobs instead of obesity".

Bananas can be found for 37 cents a pound. That's less than a buck fifty a bunch. You can buy a big bag of apples for less than 4 dollars. Large bags of frozen berries....cheap.
HUGE bags of fresh/frozen veggies are there for you if you plop down $5(most of the time less).

Frozen chicken breasts and and other lean meats are easy to find at less than $2/pound.

"Michelle should focus on jobs instead of this obesity crap". Bullshit. This is a perfect platform with perfect timing. We can chew gum and walk at the same time. A healthy sustainable economy (jobs) goes hand in hand with a healthy populace.

Huge bonfire. Little rip at Michelle.

29. Thank you for that. As a sufferer for life, I know there are times when making a sandwich or pouring a bowl of cereal has been almost more than I could manage. Sure we'll see the amazing compassion of DU come out on this post, though.

Really, making healthy food choices is closely-associated with a fiscally-well-run household, that's why back in the day schools taught 'Home Economics.'  Many younger people regularly eat one or more fast food meals daily, which is both uneconomical and not particularly good for them.

Meal planning is simply a part of living within one's means and making the most out of the economic resources available.

Oh, those new mushroom swiss burgers are to die for! I rarely get them because it's several days worth of fat and calories in one of those meals (if you're going to go for it might as well supersize) but they're SO good.

Made grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch today. Total cost for 3 adults= less than 2 bucks. Top that fast food chains.

These idiots are f'n clueless. Back in 1980, I went through a divorce. Because my finances were set up for two incomes, when she left, I wound up eating PB & J  sandwiches for a month. I got things corrected and got my finances resolved and I was back to eating somewhat normal. I didn't touch PB&J for two years afterwards. Another thing that the quoted DUmmie misses is the fact that it's cheaper to feed someone pasta or potato laden recipes than fresh fruits and veggies.

Tomato soup & grilled cheese sandwiches...lunch of champions!

I heard that Michelle O's little initiative is focusing on the food producers.  I'm in the wholesale food business, and that's not the problem.  It's the school kitchen managers.  I was looking at invoices the other day, and one school had a lot of produce and low fat things, stuff a chick would eat while facing bathing suit season.  Another school had pancake syrup by the barrel, sugar cereals, fried chicken nuggets, pizza, etc.  All that junk.  It's entirely up to those managers and what they order.  They say "well that's all that the kids will eat."  I don't buy that entirely.

Nothing better during a blizzard. Reminds me of being a kid.

As for being a kid, lunch for school consisted of a brown bag containing a sandwich and piece of fruit. Maybe a baggie of chips or the like. Only thing we bought was a milk.

I expect the school in your first example, with an invoice full of produce and low fat things, has a DUmpster full of the same stuff a few days later. A school is going to spend X dollars on food, regardless. Why not spend it on food that goes into kids instead of landfills? I don't believe school cafeterias have anything whatever to do with how many fat kids there are.

I don't think so either.  5 meals a week at school is not causing the obesity problem , it's what they are grazing on away from school.

Yeah, maybe.  I don't know much about the problem, as I never raised a kid myself and we never battled this problem as kids.  I know there's too damn much sitting around.  I guess my point was that MO was looking toward the school lunches.

I know this doesn't apply to DUmmies, but if you're willing to put a little effort into your meals, you can get considerably cheaper than that.

I buy the primal cuts of meat from Sams (whole fryer chickens, beef loins, pork loins, etc.) and cut them myself at home.  I get portions just right for my family that go immediately in the freezer, and spend considerable less money than the DUmmy is proposing. ($0.88 a pound for chicken, ~$2.49 a pound for pork and ~$1.75 - $4.00 a pound for beef (depending on what I get))  I've got enough practice playing a butcher, that I can have a month to 6 weeks worth of meat cut, bagged, tagged and in the freezer inside of an hour, and for no more than $100.

At around $20.00 for a whole pork tenderloin, I can get 8-12 sets of boneless porkchops on the real cheap.

To be honest with you, my home ec. was pretty useless. What did I learn? How to make Jello, french toast, and a apron. Oh, a putting an egg in your locker was child abuse, LOL! I taught my self how to cook and had to learn how to budget from my mother in law. And I don't stick my kids in lockers, LOL!

And they are better than the ones you buy!  They are always on sale, I get em for about $10.

In our home, instead of stocking tomato sauce and tomato soup in the pantry, we buy cases of tomato paste (the little cans).  If I need some sauce, I open a can of paste, add a little water, and then start adding the herbs I want to season it with.  If I want tomato soup, a couple of cans, and a little more water does it.  Of course the paste is also integral to other recipes (my barbecue sauce, for example).  Point is, I stock up on one thing, and pay less overall, as well as minimize the impact on my pantry space.

BTW, those Sams Club meats as often as not find themselves being diced up with some vegetables, boullion and some seasonings, and being made into soup.  Vegetable beef, chicken noodle, bean and bacon, minestrone, cheddar potato; we haven't stocked condensed canned soups - with the sole exception of cream of mushroom and cream of chicken for sauce bases - in years.  Better for ya, no preservatives, and still cheaper.

Yup.  Canned Pumpkin, curry, cream or in my case buttermilk, cuz I didn't have any, and a tad of water.

D-6~  I keep some cream of onion and cream of mushroom, for just in case, but the rest is plain ole homemade.  Been doing it for years, was trained young.

Yeah; we haven't store-bought a loaf of bread since my wife and I were dating.

We actually buy sacks of hard white wheat, run 'em through our own mill, and bake from that flour.  Good stuff.

Thanks for sharing that recipe. I am going to have to try it.
My easy tomato soup consists of 2-3 cans stewed or diced tomatoes (the Italian blend w/ garlic and oregano), 1-2 cans great northern beans, and sometimes some fresh spinach.  Top it off with some freshly grated parm/reggiano cheese.  So easy and it is ready in minutes.

I like Burger King burgers far better than McD's. You can get a BK double cheese burger for a buck now days and actually one of those will fill me up, especially if I add the fires for a buck. I will only eat at BK once or twice a month. That way I keep it as a treat and stay away from the high sodium content.
Guess what? I am happier, healthier, have more money in my pocket, and will live longer so I can poke fun at DUmmies longer.

Yeah, lately BK is where I've been gettin' my doubles. The $1 deal is to hard to pass up. I'm like you, maybe 3, 4 times a month tops for lunch. When I work the Depot I get an hour and they're right across the street.

Speaking of soup, I was shocked to notice something yesterday.  Again, glancing through invoices, I saw that a case of commercially prepared soup cost WHOLESALE $50.  This is $1.86 per measly cup.  No wonder it's $4 or so at restaurants!  And this was just run of the mill cream of broccoli, not lobster bisque or anything.  (And not even cheddar broccoli!)
Soup is cheap and relatively easy to make.  It's how you get every last scrap from a bird or roast.  Add some vegetables and TLC, and you're good to go.  I love making it.

I always keep your basic "aromatic" vegetables (potatoes, onions, carrots, celery) in the fridge, because you never know when stew meat might be cheap at the grocery store ($2.29 the other day), or you get an idea to throw some beans and penne pasta in and make minestrone soup.  Then again, a loaded baked potato is a meal in itself, and the baby carrots are great in lunches instead of Cheetos.
