Altitude Causes Weight Loss Without Exercise

after which a photograph of a mountain range

Just a week at high altitudes can cause sustained weight loss, suggesting that a mountain retreat could be a viable strategy for slimming down.

Overweight, sedentary people who spent a week at an elevation of 8,700 feet lost weight while eating as much as they wanted and doing no exercise. A month after they came back down, they had kept two-thirds of those pounds off. The results appear in the Feb. 4 Obesity.

“What is nice about this paper, is that it clearly demonstrates that there’s a lasting effect of decreased caloric intake, that people eat less even a month after they come out of high altitude,” said Massachusetts General Hospital anesthesiologist Kay Leissner, who studies high altitude physiology, but was not involved in the study.

Since a 1957 study, scientists have known that animals lose weight at high altitudes. Mountaineers also shed pounds during expeditions to 12,000 feet or more, though the exertion of climbing a mountain clearly played a role.

Hmmm.  Maybe the gigantic primitive should move to Nepal.

8. I don't like to give the big "Duh" to research, but this one is a big "Duh."

9. Duh? You already knew this?

“What is nice about this paper, is that it clearly demonstrates that there’s a lasting effect of decreased caloric intake, that people eat less even a month after they come out of high altitude,”

I thought the study was interesting. It makes me curious about the physiological changes at high altitudes and how it can last.

10. That's a claim that this paper really shouldn't make.

Try thinking critically for once. A month isn't very long, and anyone who has trained at altitude knows that the benefits last that long. So, yes, it's a big duh.

11. "Try thinking critically for once."

Why do you have to be obnoxious?

12. That is obnoxious

This must be the rudest forum in all of DU.

16. Again, what's obnoxious are knee-jerk responses from posters who don't actually want to discuss anything with intellectual honesty. But somehow that doesn't bother you at all.

BTW, check out some forums if you want to see actual obnoxious behavior. Your extreme depiction of this forum is obnoxious, by comparison.

13. Try thinking critically for once.

Saying that I'm obnoxious by asking you to refrain from knee-jerk BS doesn't change the fact that you should try it.

What's truly obnoxious is your inability to post anything but thoughtless, knee-jerk responses.

You know, I'm getting enthusiastic about this idea of having the gigantic primitive move to Nepal so as to lose weight, because of course we all wish the gigantic primitive to succeed.

franksolich is willing to donate twenty bucks for the cause.

On the other hand, franksolich is possibly allergic to high altitudes (not the same thing as "high places," by the way--geographic altitude), which is why franksolich wouldn't touch Colorado (where he's been many times) with a ten-foot primitive.

High altitudes make franksolich's head congested.

The closer franksolich is to sea-level, the better he feels.

One wonders if this being allergic to high altitudes could get one on social security disability.

The Obama economy promotes weight loss. No one can afford to eat every day anymore.  :-)

Only if Franks sole profession is as a Sherpa Guide.  :lmao:

By the way, this, from over at the gigantic primitive's digs:

How are you doing this weekend?

We have not been very faithful in our diets, but we are doing better. Hubby has really been sticking to mostly rice and veggies and soup, but he still loves meat so he baked some skinless boneless chicken breasts and added it to his rice and veggies.

While this is not on the plan, it is still better than what we used to do so I am not upset with it.

Since when is non fried chicken bad for you??? Baked, boiled, grilled, stir fried even is all good. It's when that fat is boiled into it that makes it bad.  :loser:

good point.

Can the GoodYear blimp be rented to transport the behemoth?

I don't think that the engines on one of the blimps would have the motive power to do that.  Hell, I doubt if even a Saturn V launch vehicle, with 7.5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, could do that.  (Apollo rocket)

Well to be fair to NASA engineering we are just talking about a simple lob shot. We only need a mile or 3 height and the rest of the thrust will be dragging the load.  Maybe if we add on a pair of SRB's we can git 'er done :evillaugh:

Make it four SRBs and we'll talk.

I think the DUmmies are on to something here. In all the documentaries I've watched, I have never seen a single fat Sherpa guide. There's never a treadmill or elliptical machine anywhere on the mountain, so they must avoid obesity just by living at high altitude.

You guys really underestimate the Saturn V, but getting the lardass up to the top of it would be the real engineering challenge here.

They have some big ole cranes there in the VAB. They have a huge one outside too. The new launch platform that our fearful leader axed last week is a monster sized thing you can see 6 miles away sitting next to the building. Dunno just WTF they plan on doing with it now that the wun has decided to destroy NASA.
