A top member of Congress wants President Obama to freeze more than $500,000 in stimulus money going to a Penn State global warming researcher after the school said it was expanding an investigation into the professor's work.

Rep. Darrell Issa of California, the top Republican on the House investigations committee, said Wednesday that the school's investigation calls into question the credibility of research by Prof. Michael Mann, who has played a major role in shaping the international debate on global warming.

"Until this investigation is completed, the National Science Foundation should immediately freeze all grants and funding, including the $541,184 stimulus grant to Professor Mann," Mr. Issa said. "Taxpayers should not be paying for propaganda masquerading as science."

An NSF spokeswoman did not immediately have a comment on the request.

A three-person panel at Penn State reviewed more than 1,000 e-mails that were apparently hacked from a British climate research facility and that have called into question some of the methods of top scientists who support the idea that global warming is real.

This sounds like common sense to me, so obviously it will be ignored by this administration.

$500,000 is a chump change investment to get reports that will help the government create the multi-trillion dollar Ponzi scheme of carbon credits.

Speaking of Carbon Credits (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/02/hackers-steal-carbon-credits), they appear to be the new target of hackers.

Hackers Steal Millions in Carbon Credits
Credit card numbers are so passe. Today’s hackers know the real powerhouse data to steal is emission certificates.

That’s exactly what hackers went after last week when they obtained unauthorized access to online accounts where companies maintain their carbon credits, according to the German newspaper Der Spiegel.

The hackers launched a targeted phishing attack against employees of numerous companies in Europe, New Zealand and Japan, which appeared to come from the German Emissions Trading Authority. The workers were told that their companies needed to re-register their accounts with the Authority, where carbon credits and transactions are recorded.

When workers entered their credentials into a bogus web page linked in the e-mail, the hackers were able to hi-jack the credentials to access the companies’ Trading Authority accounts and transfer their carbon credits to two other accounts controlled by the hackers.

Under environmental cap-and-trade laws, there’s a limit to the greenhouse gases companies can emit. Companies that exceed this limit can purchase so-called carbon credits from entities that produce fewer greenhouse emissions than the limit provides them.
