How to slice bread?
Since I got a bread machine a couple of months ago, i've been baking my own bread and been very pleased with the results. Well, almost. I can't seem to slice an even slice of bread. One end always comes out thicker than the other. That's a bit difficult with sandwiches when one side of the bread is the width of two slices and the other is a sliver of bread.
Any special tips and tricks to improve my bread-cutting skills or special bread knives that guide the hand in cutting an even slice?

1. For me, patience and a good knife
It seems that I have to wait a day for two for the bread to become easier to slice. And then I have to use a certain serrated knife I have that has a long (10-12" or so) blade and just go really slooooooow and carefully. If I'm careful and the bread is the correct texture, I can get really good thin uniform slices.
But I'm sure there are other ways, too.

2. This sort of thing makes it easier to get even slices

I need to get another one - I had an all wood one which got disgusting after a few years. When I tried to wash it, it came apart - the glue was water soluble and there were no nails.
And a good long knife helps. The best knife I have for slicing bread is actually a wedding cake knife I bought at a restaurant supply store. It is serrated, long and washable in the dishwasher - something I prefer. Oh - it was pretty cheap, under $10.

Why am I not surprised that a DUmmy owns a wedding cake slicing knife.
At least he had the nerve to try it on bread.

Actually, given their lack of imagination, their inability to comprehend that one thing can have more than one use, I'm surprised the primitives aren't talking about having a specific knife to cut wheat bread, another specific knife to cut rye bread, a third specific knife to cut white bread, and so on.

typical dummy not doing the math in their head...
if they can't slice the bread right, then they are probably slicing the salami and the cheese on odd angles as well.
if you arrange these odd-shaped bits appropriately, the sandwich would come out completely level.
dummys...
:thatsright:

GoBucks...are you married? Did you have a wedding reception with a wedding cake?
Most brides get at least one at one of their wedding showers. Or their mother, or mother's friend, aunt, grandmother....goes out and buys one.
Unless they are solid silver....they can be purchased for about $10.
Ribbons are tied on them, and the bride and groom use it to cut their "first bite" out of their wedding cake.
It's a "girl" thing......
I think mine is still in it's original box somewhere in my china cabinet....I don't think I've ever used it again in 33 years.....

I guess my wonderment is why the primitives even think bread has to be sliced evenly.
For utility of use, probably it's a good idea to have at least some basic standards, some rough approximate even-ness, but on the whole, it doesn't make a lot of difference, because once the bread's down there in the stomach, it's a gooey mess anyway.
The primitives can be so anal.

heh... that's what i was thinking. Flip one piece over, level sandwich. Or learn how to use a knife properly. Or stop worrying about unlevel sandwiches. There's all kinds of solutions without running to the dump. :thatsright:

If I was so challenged that I couldn't cut bread, I don't think I would announce it to the world.

aw come on, Deb....don't you want to put on your resume that you can free-hand slice bread in perfect half inch slices? :uhsure:
