Several reasons, Thor--

They don't understand the concept of freedom.
They don't want to pay the cost of keeping freedom.
They think they have no part in keeping freedom in this country.

Also kind of goes to the libertarian train of thought, "I don't care what you do, as long as it doesn't affect me" mentality.  Well, guess what--before they know it, it DOES affect them, and by then it's too late.
