Title: Is this some sort of dark ritual?

So...

...I got myself "Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days". I'm reading along and everything makes sense. I come to the end of day one and...

...a cop jumps out of the bushes...

...but it gets worse than that. I'm standing in line at the grocery store downloading what I think is the Java Developers Kit. It has the JRE in it and something called VisualVM. I don't know where I'm supposed to write the code.

Obviously this is some Rovian plot.

So then I DL the Java SE package. Well, **** me with a badger on a pogo stick if I can figure out where to write code...if I'm even in the right program.

srsly...is this some rite of passage with the geek set to keep undesirables out of their secret cabal?

Buy "Head First Java"...much easier than what you describe.  :tongue:

I would write the code in notepad (or if i was feeling truly evil - vi ) - and test it with IE/FF (or other Java enabled program).

What you may need is a Java IDE - There are several available but not ever having tried to use java I can't recommend one

It appears they have some info on getting the SDK...let's see what shakes loose.

Just use NetBeans. It recently won open source software of the year - it's enterprise worthy, and very easy to use. You can run your code by pressing a button within the IDE.

It also comes with several good examples of sample code to give you some ideas a long the way.
