The largest earthquake ever recorded in the area shook Haiti on Tuesday, collapsing a hospital where people screamed for help. Other buildings also were damaged and scientists said they expected "substantial damage and casualties."
A Reuters reporter on the scene says he's seen dozens of dead and injured in the rubble of fallen buildings.
With communications disrupted there were no reports of deaths or injuries soon after the quake, as powerful aftershocks shook the country.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles west of the capital of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of 5 miles. It was the largest quake recorded in the area, said USGS analyst Dale Grant, and the last major one since a magnitude-6.7 temblor in 1984.

Ouch.
-
This is very sad news. I have to admit that my first reaction is that "damage is estimated to be in the tens of dollars". But this is not funny at all.
-
May God watch over them all.
-
May God watch over them all.
Amen....
This is so tragic. Many of the buildings are pourly constructed concrete block or poured concrete, allowing them to collapse easily but hurt just has badly as well made concrete.
A woman is on tv now, who is from there. She just said a school collapsed in 2003 and it took 3 days to get all the students out. How long will it take to get these poor people rescued?
Our Church's "sister" parish is there. I heard on the news earlier this morning that the Archbishop was found dead in his office.
Let's also pray for the rescuers and aid people going in....they too will be in danger.
-
Tragic as it may be, it will be used as a distraction.... Be aware of what happens behind the curtains.

never waste a good crisis

How sad for them
-
If I were mobilized for this I'd be happy to help.
-
That is so sad. My prayers for everyone in that area.
I posted this on my FB but this is a link if anyone wants to donate to the Hati earthquake relief fund. www.unicefusa.org
-
This is a horrid tragedy - and it seems to be getting worse every time I read more about it.
-
Its hard to imagine concrete becoming dust. They need to sue those concrete manufacturers.
All those government buildings collapsing though.... I can dream about that happening here, can't I?
-
Are you there God? it's me, Aaron.
I know you're super busy and all, what with the global warming and everything. But I was hoping I could put in a special request today. No, I'm not asking you to turn back time and spare the Haitians. I know it's all part of your divine plan. It's sad because I don't fully understand the plan, but that's O.K. I knew it was a faith based deal when I signed up.
Anyway.
About this asshat.

Could you smite this repressed Homo? He's been around for awhile, maybe his name has come up around the poker table. I'm not asking for much, maybe some lightning, or some sort of 2000000000 lb anvil dropping from the sky.
I'd settle for a Bigfoot abduction and rape if you could swing it.
But yeah, I'll head over to Church and light a candle, make a burnt offering, whatever pleases you Lord. I just thought you'd like to know the earthquake may have missed it's intended target.
Sincerely,

Military Preps for Broader Haiti Relief Mission
By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2010 – The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is headed toward earthquake-devastated Haiti and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow to provide airlift support for the disaster-response mission, the commander of U.S. Southern Command reported today.

22nd MEU could deploy for earthquake relief
By Dan Lamothe and James K. Sanborn - Staff writers
Posted : Wednesday Jan 13, 2010 19:10:36 EST
The Pentagon is planning to send a Marine expeditionary unit to earthquake-ravaged Haiti as part of an extensive U.S. relief plan for the island nation, Defense Department officials said Wednesday.
While plans have not been finalized, the MEU would come from the East Coast, “probably out of North Carolina,†said Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser, commander of U.S. Southern Command, which is based out of Miami and oversees U.S. military operations in the Caribbean Sea. Marine officials at the Pentagon told Marine Corps Times they have ruled out the 24th MEU, already scheduled to leave on a routine sea deployment next week, making the 22nd MEU the likely option.
The MEU, which typically includes 2,200 Marines and sailors, would likely arrive aboard a large-deck amphibious ship after the Navy aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, now steaming toward Haiti from off the coast of Virginia and expected to arrive Thursday, Fraser said.

It is hard to believe that buildings could just collapse like that :-( Prayers for the entire country. This is just a disaster on top of the persistent poverty there :-( Hopefully the international aid organizations will help them rebuild with building that can withstand future earthquakes.

This picture really got me. This is just unbelievable. :(

God Bless. Is it too much to ask for that schmuck Robertson to be smoted???
Prayers up for the Haitians and the others affected.
I know our system isn't the best, but at least we have building requirements. I doubt Haiti does.
I imagine they have a tough row to hoe. 4-5 months outside Hurricane season. It doesn't look well for them one iota.
-
(Psst. Mrs.Tots. post #12)
Haiti, outside of Port Au Prince, will recover. The Dominican Republic might get a little antsy as refugees start heading across the border and seek civilization.
Haiti does have some building codes. Just not the kind of codes that mean much when you build everything out of concrete.
I'm sending my donations through Catholic Charities. They've been on the ground for years and really get the donations into the hands of the people ASAP.
Fug. This may take awhile. Only 4 paved airport runways.

Man, talk about looking in the wrong place!!
Are these concrete buildings reinforced properly? Is this really cheap concrete?
-
What's wrong with the Dominican Republic? Besides the fact that they really don't like the Haitians (race).
And concrete, thick old concrete to keep the heat down, just isn't designed to do the lindy hop.
The Northridge quake in L.A. and the S.F. one really fugged' up the only super thick concrete structures there, I.E. the freeway.
CIA World Fact Book has more info on Haiti and the Dominican republic. For more information about the structural integrity of concrete consult your local library.
-

I remember the double decker becoming an auto sandwich.
I also remember some rethug came up with a plan to pay contractors more the faster they rebuilt it. I don't know how that happened in Lala Land but it was done in record time if I remember correctly.
-
It was done in LA. And it worked. In SF we simply tore down the freeways. In Oakland, they were still rebuilding even after LA finished. Hell, the Bay Bridge still hasn't even been properly rebuilt yet and the new one looks like it may still be years away from completion. Nothin' like good ol' union labor.

I am sure leftists consider it wasteful to complete a project early, all those poor workers having to find something else to do. All that taxpayer money left unspent. lol
In Dallas when there is a wreck on the highway the dispatcher calls a tow service from a list, in order. If the first does not show up in 30 minutes, they call the next one.... obviously this means major backups and headaches for communters. In Houston, its first come first serve. Thats called incentive, and it works. Its about the only thing they do right in Houston, the godforsaken city.
-
Reanimate Sam and get to work.
But about those building codes...
The way it works is that some bureaucratic pole smoker sets the standard for what is considered "safe". Since a bureaucrat is making the rules, they can be changed. Just like what happened on the new bay bridge. See, the loyal patriots in SF decided to buy all this structural steel from Chiner. Turns out 80% of the welds didn't pass inspection. Sooo, SF and Cali decided to lower the acceptable standards so now only 60% of the welds fail.
So if our wicked awesome nation can't get it right, I really don't think the Haitians ever really had a shot at survival from the get go.
-

Yup. And yeah I saw that you wanted PR smoted. I concur. :-)
I heard that people were being medivac-ed to Gitmo, because it was the closet place in the area for medical treatment.
Those poor Haitians. Last week they had nothing, and this week they have less than that. Breaks my heart.

Brad and Angelina have donated $1M. http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20336713,00.html
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's foundation is contributing $1 million to the emergency medical operation responding to the devastating 7.0-magnitude quake in Haiti.
"It is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades," says Jolie.
Adds Pitt: "We understand the first response is critical to serve the immediate needs of countless people who are now displaced from their homes, are suffering trauma, and most require urgent care."
The Jolie-Pitt Foundation is donating the funds to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontiéres, whose three hospitals in Port-au-Prince were severely damaged, forcing the staff to work out of open-air hospitals.

Conway: 22nd MEU tapped for earthquake relief
The Marine Corps will send the North Carolina-based 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit to earthquake-ravaged Haiti as part of an extensive U.S. relief plan for the island nation, the service’s top officer said Thursday.
Commandant Gen. James Conway, speaking at a Surface Navy Association symposium outside Washington, confirmed that the unit will deploy from Camp Lejeune, N.C., to the Caribbean nation aboard several amphibious ships that were ordered to prepare for deployment Wednesday. The aircraft carrier Carl Vinson is expected to arrive sometime Thursday, becoming the first major Navy ship to arrive in the devastated country.

More than 900 soldiers bound for Haiti
WASHINGTON — The first Army troops are heading to Haiti on Thursday as the military ramps up what Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called a major effort to provide earthquake relief.
The first group of soldiers — about 100 — from the 82nd Airborne Division will leave later Thursday, the Army said. The troops will find locations to set up tents and other essentials in preparation for the arrival of another roughly 800 personnel from the division Friday.
They come on top of some 2,200 Marines, also to be sent, as the military prepares to help with security needs, search and rescue and the delivery of humanitarian supplies. More than a half dozen U.S. military ships also are expected to help, with the largest, the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, arriving Thursday.

3 amphibs to leave Virginia today for Haiti
The amphibious assault ship Bataan and dock landing ships Fort McHenry and Carter Hall will get underway this afternoon from Hampton Roads to conduct humanitarian relief exercises in preparation for Haiti relief efforts, Navy officials said.
Together with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, the force will total more than 3,600 sailors and Marines.
Bataan is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk. Fort McHenry and Carter Hall are homeported at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va.
The carrier Carl Vinson and its crew of about 3,200 sailors left Norfolk on Tuesday en route to their new homeport in San Diego. It was rerouted Wednesday and is expected to arrive off the coast of Haiti today. It will load equipment and supplies in preparation for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

I had heard flights going in and out of Port au Prince were being diverted to the Domician Republic and others were being put in long holding patterns before they could land. For those interested, the airport identifier is MTPP, and below is a link to a flight that was put on hold, You can see it in the window, and by tracking the log, you can see they had to hold for almost 2 hours off one of the southern Bahama Islands.

Earlier Fox reported that once the US AF took over the airport it would make things much easier.
It must have worked because the airport has landing strip lights tonight and planes are landing and taking off.

FBI: Beware of Haiti relief-effort scams
More than 400 Internet addresses related to Haiti have been registered since Monday's devastating quake, Internet security expert Joel Esler said.
• Don't click on links or open attachments contained within aid-related spam.
• Check out the organization at sites for the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org), foundationcen ter.org or charitynavigator.org.
• Examine the Web address of purported groups. Avoid ones that end in a series of numbers.
• Be extremely skeptical of Web sites asking for personal information, such as a Social Security number, birth date or bank account information -- it could go to identity thieves.

A radio interview with the TN Better Business Bureau this morning said the number of websites related to the earthquake has risen to 2000.

I do hope we will handle this better then the Indonesia crisis's was handled. We need to have some idea of what these people need. Millions of dollars were thrown away shipping useless stuff to Indonesia.
These people need clothing suitable for their climate they do not need winter coats, snow boots, knit hats or gloves. They have no use for dress shoes high heels or suit coats.
They need tarps and tents, cooking pots and pans that can be placed on an open fire, COTTON clothing, not polyester, flip flops for their feet. The stuff we take for granted, safety pins, sewing kits, plastic covered containers to protect their food from the rodents and water storage.
Sanitation devices, cloth diapers, nothing disposable as there will be a calling card for disease, bugs and animal life.
Then they need HOPE, Haiti is a Catholic country and the Church could send those boxes of plastic Rosary Beads that are handed out by the thousands at the January March in DC. Humans have a need for something tangable to hold in their hands, prayer beads are comforting and raise the spirit.
The Church's could open the doors of their seminary's world wide and send the students there to not just watch but to WORK, hands on labor with the people. Eat with the people, sleep on the ground with the people, suffer with the people.
Governments and their citizens can send money by the ton and rebuild the country, make it much better then it was before, but, it is up to all faiths to send those that aspire to lead in their faith to do hands on work with the people that need faith just as much as they need food.
To be told that the Pope is praying for us in a disaster is fine and dandy, what gives me hope is a young man or woman who are learning to represent their faith that is on the spot helping to deliver baby's, lugging buckets from the well, getting their hands dirty as they most likely never will have to do again in their lives.
One of the last areas on earth that Christians are REALLY needed, all kinds of Christians, they are not needed to preach, they are not needed to convert, they are needed to show by their ACTS and willingness to become one of them even for a short time that faith can move mountains.

No but we could gather up ice skates for the wanna-be ice skaters, I think Sparky has a pair of snow shoes to send. Hats are needed, I have one that says "old fartttt on it and one with moose horns. What the heck, stuff is tax deductable, I have a snow blower and rims for a 1985 Camaro that should bring joy to someone.
Seriously, my cousin is an engineer that builds bridges in Haiti, the area is a mess, people live in the rain forest and have to walk 40 miles to get to a doctor. These bridges cut off the time to about 3 miles.
Haiti is a totally out of our conception of civilization. you do know that this country is the birth of VOO-DOO brought from Yoruba in Africa.
An anthropologists dream come true, the morphing of the life styles of the today and way back yesterday.
Interesting place, so close to technology and yet the woman in some parts still carry water jugs on their heads.
There is one Charity that interests me, the Doctors and Nurses without boundaries, I have heard there were allready 500 people in that country and the overseeres of the Charity do not live in million dollar homes.
Just checked my closet and found a working Karaoke machine and tapes. I could bundle it all up with the toaster oven I no longer use, a Vacuum that works, and the Slap Shot I bought and send it all to Haiti, big tax deduction for me.
Now I can feel all a Rosy glow about my sacrifices for others, dang it must feel good to be able to send a million dollars to help out. Tax time comes and that donation just may save YOUR SKIN.
-
Look, lets just start calling this disaster "Haitrina", and start taking advantage of this crisis. Opportunities like this don't come around often enough.
Did Obama cause this earthquake because he hates dark skinned "Negros" with an accented dialect?
Gah.

I heard that FoxNation had a story on their site claiming that Obama has stated he will allow "45,000 Haitians to relocate to parts of FL"
I can't find the story :banghead:
Anyone?
Also....my contribution will go to one organization, the Salvation Army.

You think they will stop at 45,000?
Nope. I found it interesting that it stated they were thinking to send them to Orange county and the Tampa Bay area which were pretty much RED sections during the last election. Yeah, populate the locals with thankful immigrants needful of the government.

Does the Haiti Olympic Bobsled Team need a new set of goggles?

Twisted. But it made me chuckle. :hyper:
-
As I have mentioned, our church has a "sister" parish about 75 miles outside of Port-au-Prince.....
the other half went to early Mass this morning and the priest said that not only was the Archbishop of Haiti found dead in his office - as was reported on many news stations as a passing comment.....but also 100 Catholic priests have been killed.
At a time of such dire straits...when many Catholics want to see a priest's face....to know that 100 priests are also dead....it just heaps more onto the misery...
With more and more news coming out of Haiti.....it makes me wonder ....just where do they start to just begin to straighten out the country.
It is far beyond overwhelming there are no words to describe....
-

Knoxville retailer to donate Kiffin shirts to Haiti earthquake recovery efforts (http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5ie9z4zdX3IcxfN1-V-bWUkKyadLQ)
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Manager Mitzi Sherrill says the owners, Dan and Tona Burks, were hoping to turn a "negative into a positive" when they heard fans talk of burning and ripping up shirts with the former Volunteers coach's name or face on them in the wake of Kiffin's abrupt resignation.
heh...

Now that IS a negative to a positive!

So I'm watching a relief truck surrounded by Haitians on CNN. One loudmouthed genius in the crowd reads the packaging date on his MRE and starts yelling that they're being fed stale food. Loudmouth thinks the food expired in 2008 and they're all being poisoned by the UN, so a couple of his thug friends start pushing and shoving the crowd to the point where the relief truck has to leave the area or get swamped by an angry crowd.
Way to go. :whatever:

It just seems to keep getting worse, I had to turn off Fox as the possibilities of even worse to come kept coming from the shell shocked reporters.
Yup, as I write news about rescue workers fired upon last night, much food and water that cannot be delivered for lots of reasons, I wonder about the Anti-Government thugs and what they are going to do. Will there be a civil war?
This may give historians a glimpse into the past and why intire civilisations disappeared.

I saw that too--poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and they're throwing food away because they're too ignorant to read a label. Interesting clothing a lot of them were wearing, however.

Sparky, I just spoke with my son who has gone into Haiti 3 times for vacation. His take on the country is interesting, first time he and family went on a Cruse the stop in Haiti was canceled as too dangerous due to civil war. This was early 1990's. Since then they have managed to get to visit the country but never to the area of the quake. As far as he knows there were no tours to that area.
The people in the Port town were very nice he recounts, friendly and polite. Poorest people he has yet to see---- this from a kid that has seen some of the poorest Ghettos in this country.
From what he has seen in Haiti at the wealthiest town it is difficult to believe humans can survive being much poorer. At one point he had a pocket full of those presidential dollar coins and no one would accept them, they thought it was fake money.
He would go back in a heart beat to visit again, he and wife were fascinated with the VOODOO culture. It seems to be everwhere. He found a vendor that made dolls to order, you give him a face photo and he prints the face onto a doll and gives you pins and instructions on how to poke them. These people are Catholic and have intergrated the faith of their ancestors slaves from Yoruba in Africa. This I knew but did not think it so belanent---------New Orleans now has much the same thing but it is not in your face.
Sparky you mentioned the clothing of the survivors, did you see someone wearing snow shoes.?

The quake was in Port-au-Prince--the CAPITAL. If you can't get there on a cruise...
And FWIW, I'd love to know what cruiseline schedules a stop in Port-au-Prince, just to avoid them. Royal Caribbean has a stop in Haiti, but at it's own private island, Labadee.

That's the stop Labadee, I could not remember the name of that Port. Now I was not aware that Labadee was an island much less a Private Island. By Private, do you mean the island is owned by some big time money person.? Didn't Marlen Brando buy an island in the South Pacific.?
Buy the way, why has not the President of Haiti been all over the news.?
-
I stand corrected--the town is not privately-owned, but the beach is a private one, where RC anchors off and ferries in tourists.

Nope! I ain't falling for it. Nope nope nope. I'll continue to scroll past any Vestanumbers posts. I'm not that smart to start with and her posts take away brain cells with every straining attempt to muddle through one. :-)

Did you see any Hatians wearing snow shoes?

What a tragedy for Haiti. Quite frankly, I think the death toll could probably exceed the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Prayers and thoughts to the Haitians. :( :bawl:

Proportionally...I don't think there's any question that it will.
I saw a Fox report about an hour or so ago... I thought it was live though it may have been a rerun....about an orphanage with children as young as 3 days - which was after the quake- they are very very desperate for supplies.
The Fox reporter said that news people, military, US embassy, UN workers, other rescue workers....are all aware of this orphanage. Several of the children have already been adopted by American families and were awaiting travel to come to the States when the earthquake happened.
Jonathan Hunt, the reporter, said that twice the orphanage people - the few who have stayed to take care of the children - have had to fend off looters.
When Hunt and his crew found them this morning....they were singing hymns of thanks. When he asked the workers why....they told him because they were alive.
*sniff*
This is such an overwhelming task to search and rescue, feed, bury the dead, help the injured, clean-up.....and so far...there does not seem to be a "plan"... :(

I saw a story about an old folks home with 85 people who were "going to die" about a mile from the airport where all of the aid is coming in.

I saw a thing about it on the scroll on the bottom of the screen on Fox.
According to Fox...it's a hospice. I know it sounds cold....but maybe those getting the aid out, do not feel that a hospice is a priority.
Having had family members and friends in hospice in 3 different states....people don't go into hospice care unless they have less than 2 months. I'm not talking about the people who have hospice care come to their homes, but the hospice facilities connected with hospitals. The ones I know didn't last longer than 2 weeks.

Not for long. Clinton wants to make it a liberal Utopia.
BTW - do NOT donate to the .gov or to that moron Wyclif Jean - or however the fawk you spell it. WJ's "charity" seems to be lacking a few tax returns... and seems they pay WC for every appearance. Shady at best.

I think it's all ridiculous. Tevez should apologise to Gary, Gary should apologise to Tevez, Tevez needs to come back to United. It's a sorry state of affairs, certainly.
Why are you posting this on every thread?
-
To make sure that everyone knows United needs Tevez. Berbatov's no Tevez amirite?
If I only had a clue who these people were. lol.
