DU'ers helping DU'ers in the job market? Ideas, add your own
Friday I got a call about a job in WA, 3-4 months, doing data management. I have the experience (though my 15 years in the field was not solely devoted to such I have done a wealth of it, and two companies I have done so for are fortune 500 companies).
Problem is, I am in Ohio and not sure I want to leave my daughter for that long if I get it (Interview next week on phone). On the other hand, I could easily pay for her dental care and such (very high paying contract). Then I worry about the health of the X and being so far away if things get worse (like, who will take care of daughter if things hit a downturn?).
I have pondered it all this weekend (and I think it was Lurk's thread that got me to decide to post this), finally decided I will talk to them.
It all got me to thinking though about DU
Suppose I just don't get it, or decide I just cannot be gone that long. How would I go about passing on the info to those here who might also be able to do so?
If it was a friend of mine I would just email them, call them, etc.
If I come across a job where people here might be a fit that is not of interest to me/too far/etc - how would I best let others know?
I know skinner once mentioned to me something along the lines of an alert/ping/attention list where we could alert DU'ers to a particular thread based on content (where they indicate they want to be alerted to such), and with such a system, especially with some of us being out of work and already searching, we could help one another out by looking for jobs not only based on what we need/want but on what others need/want.
You may have a job and know of openings and be able to pass those along (with just a link of course, no point in letting people know where you work as some would do weird things with such info).
The problem, IMHO, with how DU is structured is that many folks have their 'place' they gravitate to - like GD, the Lounge, Etc - and don't often see the other areas. On any given day you may not think to hit up a jobs area or someone else may not think to post something in such an area.
We have a lot of people here, a ton of resources, just not sure the best way for me/others to harness such in a simple way to help each other out.
So what are YOUR ideas? How do you think you could best help? How about a way to post resume's with company names/personal info removed and have others review such and offer advice on re-writing?
I don't know, which is why I am asking you :)

1. I'm in IT and looking for work.
I'm in the Philly area and can't really relocate. DU does have a Career Help and Advice Group, but unfortunately it's not very active.

2. Green jobs.
At the program for this morning's ethical culture, the speaker talked about the coming green economy and how it outperforms non-green jobs during economic downturns.
I'll post tomorrow the name of the book I can't remember.
But check for job fairs for re-training for these jobs. You'll get in on the bottom floor, get established, and are investing for your future in more ways than one. Very exciting.

15. Perhaps make the Jobs forum link/button really prominent on the main DU page?
Perhaps even have a link/button prominently displayed in every forum, so it can't be missed?
Sorry, I'm just trying to look at this as someone who doesn't go to many of the forums beyond GD, GD-P, LBN, and EaOA; I can't be the only one. :)

Penny Stock Scam Corp is looking for a COO I heard.
Dummies are always posting about how bad the job market is...this morning, two DUmmies have good job prospects and neither seems to want it...interesting ain't it.
no_hypocrisy Donating Member (1000+ posts) Sun Jan-10-10 10:54 PMA lot of DUmmies believe that horseshit. The only people actually making a living in "green" jobs are lugging around those huge bags full of mashed up pop cans. But that's hard work, so DUmmies aren't interested.

Not really, just par for the course in DUmmie land.
He didn't have a problem leaving his other kids. :loser:
Wonder if THIS post will get read on the air...somehow I think not. But Straight Story, you are SUCH a pathetic whiner! Are we supposed to think you're being compassionate because you're considering NOT getting a job (thereby making life better for your DAUGHTER who didn't divorce you) because you want to "be there" for the X and the kid. Your wife LEFT YOU for another guy! She's ****ing someone else and you're acting like a love-sick puppy. It's not your job to take care of her anymore. The attention you're lavishing all over her could be better spent on your child. But we have this most amazing invention now called an airplane! As COO you'll make enough to afford a ticket for daughter to join you should your X-wife's UNDIAGNOSED supposed illness take a turn for the worse. You've spent the past few days WHINING, lamenting with an angst that would rival that of any emo tween, about how you're desperately trying to get this or that expensive thing for the X and your daughter. Now, the opportunity (supposedly because no one knows what to believe when it comes to you folks at the DUmp) drops right into your useless lap. Man up and take the job, granted you'll be scorned by left-wing radio but your daughter will at least be able to get a few cavities filled and buy a new pair of shoes. If you don't take the job you have NO business whining about how you can't afford anything.
Cindie
I do believe that the term "Man Up" is a term not uttered in DUmmie Land!!!!
I thought the X has a husband?!? Im I confusing this X with one of the many other X's on DU?The X has a husband, but he's a deadbeat like SS. The X is not real good at marrying well.

Yeah, there's a shitload of those goin' up!
Green energy.... :rotf:
I was watching some German news a week or two ago. They had a story about farmers making a profit on their farms by putting up wind generators and solar panels.
The government paid them 50 cent per KW for the electricity they produced.....and then sold it for 20 cent per KW.....the new socialist math just blows my mind.
During the big freeze across the UK they now have found a problem with wind power. Up to 5% of their power is supposed to be wind right now and during the worst freeze in decades the wind farms were actually producing 0.2% of the 5.0% they could have produced. Of course they are mandated to raise their renewable power source to 25%, which means that during the next big freeze, people are likely to die in big numbers.
The generator room (seven 800-kW generators) was noisy as Hell, and stunk pretty bad, too. But they have an uptime availability of over 99%, judging from the numbers they gave us, and they run at somewhere between 93% and 94% of capacity.
In NYS, at one of the very first wind farms, we had one come down not too long ago. From the discussions in my office (which appraises said wind farms), there's a lot of engineers playing CYA right now.A tower fell down?
I just watched a Discovery Channel "How It's Made". They were makin' LED stop lights. We have since found out, if you use those in the part of the country where it actually snows, ya know about 50% of the country, they don't generate enough heat in order to keep the lenses free from ice. BIG FRIKKIN" SURPRISE idiots!
Now they figure they're going to have to put heaters in the lights to keep them from freezing. Surprise, surprise, they will use more energy than the original incandescents that generated their own heat!
Green my ass!!!!!!!!!!11111
