Three ways for an economy to grow   Updated at 7:41 AM

1) Grow something and harvest it

2) Mine raw materials and sell it

3) Take raw materials or something grown and add value to it through manufacturing.

Can't change that.

Education supports those activities because it makes them more efficient and can produce people who have knowledge to design new products for manufacturing. Things that increase trade, are good as well, as long as you are on the plus side of the trade equation. The service economy, exists to service these activities. Your service sector can't grow larger than the benefit of you economic output.

For instance, for years it has been discussed around my region of investment in a train from New York City to my region. I love the idea as a longtime resident of this region, because it will bring in money to my region and take money from New York and New Jersey.

New York will get some benefit from people from my region spending discretionary money on entertainment in New York, however, the benefit for my region will far exceed New York's as people move into my region and spend the majority of their money on grocery stores, bars, dinging, auto mechanics, housing, etc in my region and that is how you have to view trade agreements which is essentially what a regional rail system to New York would be.

1) Cut everyone's taxes and stop spending so much of our money

2) Remove burdensome regulations that do nothing but empower bureaucracies

3) Get the government out of the way

1. Not necessarily

I agree that is likely in your case, but no matter how free and porous the borders get between us and Latin Americans - most Americans aren't going to move down there. Rather the wealth of those areas will be transferred here with less wealth going down there.

2. If Latin American leaders are smart

They take our money and spend it on infrastructure on their own.

WTF?  The OP didn't even mention Latin America. Can't the DUmmies stay on topic for even one post?

3. Oh Dear God In Heaven. More of this Nonsense?

The service sector can't grow larger than manufacturing?

Pssst! It already is -- 67.8% of the US GDP is Services.

Pssst. Hey DUmmie, government jobs outnumber production type jobs in the US.

You're speaking a language the DUmmies do not understand.   :cheersmate:

I've had highly educated engineers work for me that could do the math but couldn't change their own oil much less run a project.  One guy (PHD) would be good on the number but half of the time would be orders of magnitude off. He had no common sense as to where a result ought to be. That's education with no common sense.  Unfortunately in America and the world, a piece of paper is considered more valuable than experience.

And what if no one is buying what you harvest, mine or manufacture? You can mine iron, convert it to snow-blowers that run on corn-based ethanol all you want but they would never sell in South Florida.

What if the people harvesting, mining and manufacturing don't think they are duly compensated? How will you compensate them in the first place given the limited scope of your economic model?

How much should be harvested, mined or manufactured? Are these arbitrary goals or are they based on actual economic demand? How do you gauge the level of demand? How do you adjust for increases or decreases in demand or supply?

Just a couple of starter questions. There are more after these.

Apparently this primitive isn't aware of the environmental whackos who have made growing and harvesting (can't harness water or might upset some local fish or bird), mining (drilling), and manufacturing (pollution) impossible.  Back to square one with you.

It bears repeating:  Common sense is the least common thing in the world.  And the more knowledge that drips into one ear, the more common sense that is displaced out the other ear at a volume that would rival the flow over Niagara Falls.

Too true.  That is a sad statement .... true but sad.  I don't think you find that so much in smaller businesses where the owner is making the decisions but when it gets to a corporate level where, rather than let their people pick those they want to hire they have it all in writing and the writing says they MUST hire someone with the paper and experience be damned.

We had a small conversation on this not long ago.

Three ways for an economy to grow: Shoot the deadbeats, stop entitlement payments, watch DUmmies make a mad dash to socialist countries.

A couple of years later with the debt paid off we'll be on a roll again...lookout world.

1) Grow something and harvest it

Grow the weed.....

2) Mine raw materials and sell it

Remove the stems and seeds that you don't need...........

3) Take raw materials or something grown and add value to it through manufacturing.

Make clothing, building materials, medicine, etc from the hemp......

I'm absolutely sure this is what the DUmpAss is talking about.
