Title: My sons' Boot Camp experience
Post by: JakeStyle on December 30, 2009, 03:34:52 PM
My 19 year old son enlisted in the USMC and began boot camp at MCRD San Diego back in August with a scheduled graduation date of Oct 30.  Unfortunately he developed pretty severe pneumonia late in 1st phase and spent most of Sept and a portion of Oct in the Naval Hospital and then in the medical rehab platoon.  He finally got back into a training platoon mid-Oct and we have been preparing for a graduation celebration on the 8th of Jan.

He called me from the hospital at Camp Pendleton yesterday; it seems that he somehow managed to break his left leg (compound tibia fracture), and will be processed out within the next couple of days.  I really feel for the kid, they are telling him to expect it to be 6-8 months before he can try again, and of course he'll have to start all over again from the beginning.  He was in surprisingly good spirits when we spoke but I know that he is extremely disappointed, he has wanted to be a Marine since he was about 6.  I am hoping that I can talk him into finishing college and going the officer route but I suspect that he'll be back at MCRD this summer.

Here's hoping for a speedy and full recovery, he sounds like an extremely committed young man.

He'll succeed though...if he's truly a Marine.  ;)

Life looks random, but it really isn't.  All things happen for a real reason.  This will turn out exactly like it is suppose to.

God bless your wonderful son.

God Bless your son, and tell him to keep the faith.  He will, without a doubt, be one of the best-trained Marines to ever come out of Boot Camp.  The Lord works in mysterious ways, and this has His Glorious fingerprints all over it.

Best of luck to him. Boot is very hard once, doing it several times would really suck, but 1st phase is the worst and if you know what to expect it should go by fast - the rest is well worth the wait.

Man that's tough luck.....getting set-back once is bad enough but to have it happen again and be bad enough to be seperated from the service too..... :bawl:

Good luck to him.

Prayers up for a speedy recovery and future safety.

He'll be an inspiration to his fellows, that's for sure.  I admire his grit.

Thanks so much everyone.  I'm really hoping that I can go pick him up tomorrow, now that we know he is being cut loose I'd like to get him home.

That's where I would want him too!

Something about no matter how old they are...when they are sick or injured...they should be at home!

Get him home and make sure that he knows that he's not alone in this world, nor is he friendless.
