Flying the Predator Drone
I just found out that a nephew of mine is heading for a new job, pilot of a Predator Drone.
Now this came as a great shock to me. It was not because some relative of mine was now in the business of murder-by-wire with satellites and the marvels of science mightily involved, I hardly know the guy and last night's reunion was the first time I've seen him since he was a teenager just learning to fly, some 25 years ago. And that is just the point. This guy is an experienced pilot, I mean experienced big time. He has been in and out of that revolving door between military and civilian aviation all his working life; before his last layoff he flew for Delta. The man has tens of thousands of hours in the air.
But here is the thing. Somehow I thought they taking promising young recruits and training them to fly these remote killing machines. I had no idea they were pulling in pilots with great experience to sit in that control seat. And there is this too - and I just can't get my arms around this just yet - he flew cargo planes, he flew people around the country and indeed the world. While he has certainly flow into combat areas he has not, in any meaningful way, flown combat missions. He has no other experience at shooting at anyone. Now this strikes me as a very odd thing. My notion of a video-machine addicted kid going into the military and being taught to operate a drone is shattered. Its a cool and calm middle aged man with thousands of hours in peaceful cockpits who are being sent to the job. I just don't know how feel about that.

Those skilled and dedicated young men who spend their days in the darkened Predator control rooms deserve our admiration and gratitude. Every day, they use their deadly tools to save countless innocent lives and to neutralize threats to our nation's security. They are an effective, sharp edge of the sword, converting thousands of jihadi maniacs to the religion of peace. The only truly good muslims are those who have received the lethal attention of Predator pilots.
So it's difficult to believe that someone could qualify, while burdened with even a trace of the genetic flotsam that resulted in ThomWV.

Newsflash for you DUmmie...from the pilots I've talked to...none of them leave flight school saying "MAN! I can't wait to fly that new model of the C-130!" or "I'm so excited to fly the C-9 Nightingale...it sure is a smoooooooth ride."
All pilots are fighter jocks at heart. They all have some kind of fantasy of putting steel on target.
Seems your Nephew is no different.

The cream will rise to the top, but so will the crust....
Guess which one became ThomWV....

Sounds like he has very little in common with the WV DUmmie

No shit Sherlock!!!! What is this DUmmies logic? No one plays Microsoft Simulator to see how to fly a 747! I would rather fly an A10 Warthog! Something about that gun is just the ultimate in penile extension!! LOL!

You got that right. If any pilot thought otherwise it would lead to more ribbing then any DUmmie could imagine. It's more likely a case of his unit was either looking at a base closer or conversion to the Predator. Several National Guard Units that once flew F-15's and F-16's are now flying tankers or Predator Drones.

forget the Predator. Are the really big drones capable of aerial refueling?

Hey ThomWV,
Ask your nephew if he can see the faces of the women and children on Obama's target list just before impact!

I can think of 19 people that might have done that prior to 9-11.

No. The larger Glogal Hawk can fly for 24 hours unrefuled.

On a minimum of three different levels

I guess unmanned aerial refueling is still in the future.

I just don't know how feel about that.
Good, because no one worth anything is asking you.

Okay, I'll take terrorists out of the equation. I meant real men/women. I don't really classify some cowardly killer of innocents as anything but insane muslim trash! Not worthy of being compared to flight jocks.
-
I don't think Thom has any conception of just how very, very much flying would be involved in 'Tens of thousands of hours.'
I'd sure agree that very, very few military pilots set out to be truckdrivers or busdrivers, and don't do it without harboring latent 'F86 going over the Yalu' tendencies. Still and all, a lengthy record of long-haul flights has a shitload more to do with a Predator mission profile than fighter or attack plane missions so it does make too much sense for a wack-job like him to have totally made it up. Plus the job does have the great added bonus of occasionally being cleared to drop a hot one on a nest of dirtballs.

Can't think of a single one of us that wouldn't jump at that chance!!!!! Hell, I'm in favor of making Iran into an oil slick! We have the technology to "skim" the oil off the top in order to supply our demand.

Not only aerial refueling but carrier ops as well. Northrop Grumman's X-47B will soon be undergoing carrier testing.
Dynamic Tests Validate Design and Structural Integrity of X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System for Carrier Operations
(Source: Northrop Grumman; issued July 29, 2009)
SAN DIEGO --- Northrop Grumman Corporation recently completed a series of static and dynamic proof load tests to validate the design and structural integrity of the U.S. Navy's first X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) for aircraft carrier launches, recoveries and at-sea operations under the UCAS Carrier Demonstration (UCAS-D) program.
"Arrested landings, catapult launches, high winds, pitching deck, subsonic speeds, you name it - the operating environment of the carrier air wing is unforgiving," said Scott Winship, vice president and program manager of the Navy UCAS program for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems sector. "The X-47B was built for these conditions, and as the results of the rigorous proof test show, the design of the aircraft is structurally sound for all aspects of carrier operations."

Given that it's aerobatic capabilities wouldn't be limited by a human pilot, I could see that thing causing lots of UFO reports.

Probably already has with it's test flights.
