Imagine the outrage if any Republican President went on vacation during a recession and spent $4,000 a night on accommodations. On ABC’s Good Morning America Wednesday, correspondent Yunji de Nies seemed to suggest that President Obama’s family will be spending such an amount renting expensive living space at an estate house in Hawaii for a two-week Christmas vacation. De Nies: "Christmas trees here aren't cheap – neither is staying in this $8.9 million house, which runs $4,000 a night. The Obamas rented this one and the two next door for family and friends. When you spend that kind of money, people pay attention to detail."
De Nies did not specify exactly how much is being spent or where the money is coming from, though the amount may even be significantly more than $4,000 a day as she related that "the two next door" were also being rented for family and friends of the Obamas. The ABC correspondent also recounted that the estate house overlooks a beach popular with royalty: "But it's the master bedroom and its breathtaking view that is the crown jewel. Kailua Beach has been ranked the island's best, a favorite of Hawaiian royalty."

If he's been able to get 3 houses @ $4000 a night...I'm not only really impressed...but very doubtful.

The article is ambiguous. It says that the vacation is $4K/day, but later says that the place they are staying in is $4K/day, and that they had also rented two other places. My guess is that the place they are staying in is $4K/day, and the other places they got for friends and stuff they do are even more. And of course there's the Secret Service people and medioid life forms.

$4k per night for one place...plus he rented out 2 more houses ...FOR 10 DAYS!!!!
That's $120,000 before you add in travel, food, special security, transporting the cars, helicopters and whatever else he needs, the Secret Service personnel and putting up all these periferral people involved - like pilots, drivers, etc for 10 days.
Keep in mind...this is the person who chastizes corporations for having corporate parties and retreats....
Obviously it's a goose/gander sort of thing... ::)

I wouldn't assume it is all picked up by The People. Certainly the Secret Service costs and the AF1 stuff, but usually presidents kick in private funds for part of it, especially for "friends". I believe that was the case on Obama's last vacation on the Vineyard.

It is a very long flight from San Fran to Hawaii,guessing from DC it is probably 14 hours total at least.
A lot farther then any other President has taken for a "vacation" I bet.

When I went from here through Atlanta....from the time I got up, flew with stops in Atlanta, Dallas, Honolulu, to Maui to hotel and dinner...we were up just over 25 hours.
According to some statement Michelle made at a Q&A at some Children's Hospital last week..."the President considers Hawaii to be his home"....so I guess he's not counting this as a vacation. Guess that big house in Chicago is just a mailing address....

Flying commercial, it's about six hours from IAD-SFO, and another six from SFO-HNL. Given that there are no commercial flights from the east coast to Hawaii, I'm just guessing but I'd say 11 hours isn't unreasonable to assume.

It seems as if he gets more vacations then office time. He may not know what his office looks like, since he averages at least a vacation a month. Heck, my great great grand kids are going to have to pay for his term, too. What a great life to look forward to. So not fair.

I live in Kailua, Hawaii, not far from where Obama is spending his Christmas vacation. He is staying at the Castle Estate, a beachfront mansion at the end of Kailua Beach. I just got back from spending Christmas on the mainland and don't like what I'm having to deal with in our little beach town - traffic congestion on our two lane streets (It took me 35 minutes to get home from the post office due to the detours around where he is staying, and it usually only takes me 10 minutes. He and his entourage must have been leaving to go somewhere.) I don't like seeing boats with machine guns in the canal close to my house and out in the water near Castle Estate. (I wonder how much it costed to bring them to Hawaii and how they got them here.) I went on my early morning jog today and was stopped by the Secret Service before I got to the end of the "public" beach. Of all the places in the world to spend Christmas, he picked our little beach community. I'll be glad when he's gone and hope he finds somewhere else next year. This is the second year he rented the Castle Estate for his Christmas vacation. (I guess I should say "the American people" rented the Castle Estate - not Obama.) During the campaign he rented another beachfront mansion on Kailua Beach.

Same way they get anything to anywhere Obama travels....those big huge C-??? whatever they are airplanes. They put his limos, helicopters, humvees, etc in them.
Most presidents, with the exception of Clinton...went to their homes for vacation. Reagan went to California to his ranch, Bush 41 went to Kennebunkport to his home, Bush 43 went to Crawford to his ranch....they had places for the SS to stay, they entertained more at home so as to not disrupt the communities. All of them, including Clinton, seemed happy...and content with... spending time at Camp David.
And they were skewered by the press and the liberals any time they went "home"....
But hey....Obama has the combination to money the printing press and all he needs to do is order more printed... :censored:

OK, he did go to Normandy, but he also snubbed President Sarkozy by turning down a state dinner with him. I guess that this was for the D-Day commemoration and an included family vacation.

Were my hubby to become president WOW.
First thing I would do is to rip up the floors and replace the swimming pool in the White House.
I would never travel outside the WH except for one of those old fashioned buggy with horses naturally, clip clopping its way to the airport. My dear Husband the president would at my encouragement work a 8 hour 5 day a week job and weekends travel about the world just for supper.
For 4 years no one would actually see my neck from all the Asian Gold Jewelry and what not dripping off my body.
All 18 of my at tendents would have to wear 18 century clothing while on MY property.
Yeah, anyone of us with a job with unlimited experience account is going to use what is given. Why the heck not, I don't expect to see the President clipping coupons for food buying for a State Dinner.
How can we complain about the freebies we give to any elected official. We gave them the stuff in the first place, not their problem if they use it for all it is worth.
The problem is Obama is just a little Bowl Weevil looking for a home. Some day he will settle down somewhere but for now he is free to roam the Planet.
