I think photoshop now includes a built-in "slimming" function. ;)

I know! I was worried about Detroit, but I think the urban renewal funds should go toward repaving Schlussel's face, first!

Nonetheless, the socialists, in a last-gasp attempt to pretend that everything is still working well, have started wasting taxpayer money to "spruce up" abandoned buildings. Post by: rustybayonet on December 24, 2009, 07:39:22 AM: Being an old fart, born and raised in a suburb just north of Detroit, that video bothers me. Unfortunately it's true, for alot of downtown Detroit. You can also add parts of the City of Pontiac,[GM's Pontiac Motors] alot of the City of Flint,[GM's Buick Motors, & Fischer Body] and the City of Saginaw, [GM's Steering Gear, & Fischer Body] - because they were/are large auto/union towns.

Then there is "Ford" Country, Dearborn [southwest suburb], Ford Headquarters and the start of Ford manufacturing in the downriver area. Chrysler headquarters in Troy/Auburn Hills takes care of the lower part of the 'thumb'area of Michigan. These areas aren't nearly as bad as the video of Detroit, but the unemployment there is.

All the areas mixed in between those towns have a high concentration of small tool and die shops and suppliers for the 'Big 3', their unemployment rate is almost as bad.

Last summer we went back up there. Our oldest granddaughter graduated from high school in Wisconsin. After leaving there we drove around through the upper peninsula of Michigan, down over the Mackinaw Bridge and into the upper part of the lower peninsula, to visit relatives and friends. North of Bay City things are still beautiful and welcoming [except the roads] but the closer we got to Detroit the worse things became, fortunately we drove straight down I-75 cut across to Indiana to return home, glad we have moved from the state.

Post by: longview on December 24, 2009, 04:52:12 PM: I vaguely remember the early mayors, like Cavanaugh, but Young got my attention as being totally irresponsible (he reminds me of someone...).

My children have asked why I left. Now they can understand. I have a sister who worked for one of the "Big 3" and was a real supporter of all things Detroit. Now that circumstances have forced her and her husband to leave she is grateful. One month of living in a better environment changed her. She is starting to come around politically, too. Beginning to see that what was "supposed to be" couldn't happen as a result of the methods.

Post by: SVPete on December 26, 2009, 11:29:11 AM: I had a substantial idea of what was coming, but, even allowing for a large degree of selectivity, this video was flat-out dismaying and scary. A couple more decades of government and union thuggery and this whole country is going to be a Rand-esque post-industrial Zimbabwe-style hell-hole.
