Title: How the other half lives...
Post by: bkg on December 21, 2009, 01:55:45 PM
Watching some HGTV show while I work... Who spends $15K on a bedroom rennovation for their 8 year old daughter????

And will they adopt me?  :rotf:

Same people who spend $100K+ on her "Sweet 16" birthday.

I have never even bought a vehicle that cost that much, or even particularly close to it.  If I was going to spend that much on a room, it would have a machine shop in it when I finished.

Yeah I've seen some pretty outrageous stuff on HGTV. I love that channel though :-)

The ones that kill me are where people spend 50-100k on a one room renovation and then some expert comes in to tell which family got the "most bang for their buck". Oy!

Cable shows like that never feature regular everyday people. Have you ever seen the houses the the Supernanny goes in? Those families look like they can afford their own nanny or mother's helper.

My runnin' buddy's neighbor works for HGTV (it's here)....

I saw him at a Halloween party and asked him basically the same question that bkg asks.

Also...who goes out and spends $450,000 on their FIRST home?

He said that they have tried shows with a more "practical" price/cost...but they do not get watched like those showing the expensive properties. Even if people can't afford them...their viewers want to watch the high priced "re-do's", homes, etc.

We did all agree though that even the expensive shows can give the viewer some great ideas.....one just has to adapt to their own budget.

...or ....

...get really depressed..... :whatever:

Yeah, it would be pretty boring to watch how the majority of the world approaches home buying/decorating/renovating. There are a few shows on HGTV that show reality like House Hunters, Property Virgins, Design on a Dime, etc...I personally like the ones on TLC that show first time house flippers. It can be train-wreck worthy.

One of the benefits of being a Realtor.....I get to see some really neat ideas.

One the flip side.....I get to see some pretty horrible stuff too! :o

Heh.

I get my "decorating" ideas from agricultural and industrial facilities.
